Let's Go Slumming

Description
I recorded this tune a few years ago, but thought I'd give it another crack--besides, I thought now that everybody is broke after the Christmas season, this would be appropriate! Incidentally, it's funny how that little yellow "Community Chest" card from "Monopoly" has taken on a very prophetic meaning these days...and not quite "figuratively", either! My editorial for the year. Printed copies of this editorial are available for $9.99--send your money order or cash (no personal checks, please) to Klein-Ko Enterprises, PO Box 222, Birmingham, AL 35208.

Thank you for listening and let's hope this is a good year for all of us, and especially for MacJams!

Michael

"Let's Go Slumming" was written by Irving Berlin (1936)
Accompaniment: Mr. Alan McPike

So greatly appreciated and thanks so much for coming by to listen! I think they play these things on the finer brands of door bells these days, not entirely sure! Take care now, Michael

Monopoly
Well Tim, being born and raised in the city "Monopoly" is based on, I've played more than a few games since childhood. In fact, I still collect various editions of the game when I see them. In my 25 years growing up there, two places on the board I never found: Park Place and Oriental Avenue--I have no idea where they are, even though Atlantic City is only about 1.6 miles wide and 5 miles long! As always, it's great to hear from you--thanks again and take good care now Tim! Michael

Obscure but swinging
Don't think I've heard this before. Good recreation of pre-war swing jazz. Turn down the bass and treble and add a bit of static, and this could well be an old air check recording. You've got the style down pat, and you have the pipes to bring it off. Good one.

Air checks...
I always sought out reissues of the old radio air checks; often I would find the musicians and singers a bit more relaxed and of course, doing variations on what I had grown familiar with hearing on record. Great to hear and see you here Henry--I always enjoy what you have to offer. Thanks again and take good care now! Michael

Let's Go Slumming
Old Irving was a heck of a song writer, with a nice sense of humour, too. You have captured the tenor of the lyrics perfectly, Michael. And I hope the "tenners" roll in :-) AP is in fine form, as usual. Take care, Peter.

Peter!
So glad to hear from you and extremely grateful for your kind words and encouragement. As always, I listen back to myself and cringe here and there, but with this one, I found it much easier to attack certain notes than the last time I recorded it. That's progress and that's always a good thing as you know! You take good care now and keep that music coming! Michael

Yes, this one is VERY obscure, but then I've found a good 3.2 tons of Irving Berlin songs that are ripe for rediscovery (I'm hankering to do "He Ain't Got Rhythm" one of these fine days!) Much obliged mate--you take care now! Michael

As always, you are too kind! Most of the arrangements I sing to are written and performed by Alan McPike (I believe he uses something called a Bespoke organ or synthesizer for many of these, but whatever, the result is always excellent!) Great to hear from you and take good care now, Michael

swanky as ever - good feeling in the voice and piano - as i was dreaming late last night of my singing " takin' care of business" in a jazz form and i even recall the twisted melody change.

Thank you Scott!
Well, put that stuff down or record it as fast as you can! I don't know how many times I found myself humming something that I think would be a great start of a song, and then promptly forget it (this happens with my vocals too--I go around singing under my breath, come across something nifty and then out it goes again!) Much appreciate hearing from you Scott--hope you're not too cold up there in Edina! Michael

when slumming...
... this is where I always go - to MJK on Park Avenue. At MJK I easily pass the musical Go, collect $200 worth of classic standards and definitely do not go to jail...

Thanks again Jack!
And just a little "Monopoly" tip: Try to purchase all the orange properties (New York Ave, St. James Place and Tennessee Avenue). The reason for that is everybody winds up in jail just down the street from them so their odds of landing on those three properties are greatly increased. Incidentally, I played the piano in a few joints on New York Avenue back in the day. St. James Place is actually nothing more than an alley! You take care now and appreciated hearing from you Jack! Hi Dave
I always look forward to hearing from you--thanks so very much! Well, no same old cheap ribbon mic I've had for the past couple years now, but this time around I did make use of a WAVES plug-in I have, "Aphex Exciter"--I person who's mixing abilities I respect greatly suggested I use a bit of that. So that makes your observation greatly pleasing to me Dave, thanks! Much obliged and here's to another year of fine music coming from you! Michael

Hold the phone here!
You had me worried there a moment Bud--I sang "where they're dwelling"! You had me going a moment there, but I must confess, I've often typed the wrong thing in and not what I had intended (especially when I'm tired!)I thank you many times over for coming over to check this thing out and always happy to hear from you! You take care now and keep up the fine work this new year! Michael

Never Disappointed...
MJK delivers another hit. Ho, hum...
BUT...you have such a comfortable way of delivering these ancient gems that I always wait with great anticipation for my next "fix" from the list. This is just great. You're in good voice. (I agree and disagree with a comment you make up above: "I think they play these things on the finer brands of door bells these days." Your performance is way too good for door bells. And... you and I have more in common than you might realize: I write 19th century elevator music! How passe is THAT? And we're both cryin' our way to the bank. Yieps.)

Personality Plus
Hi Michael.. One of the interesting things about these songs of yesteryear is catching certain terms and words that haven't been heard in eons..like 'slumming'..Did Ella ever cover this? Sounding as grand ever and how you add character to each line making the lyrics come alive as if you're singing this in a film.. I could picture you in top hat and tails singing this.. a la Fred Astaire!!
2 listens worth..:)
