Walls Closing In

Description
This is the kind of song one writes after spending too much time at home alone : )

For a category I would put it in "Senior (Contemporary)."

The music was recorded in GarageBand; the sound effects were made in Audacity.

Lyrics
WALLS CLOSING IN

you're alone - no distractions
no one to please - just your own reactions
just when you think you are about to win
then the walls start closing in

tired of giving tired of faking
you've constructed a prison of your own making
not so much locked up as locked in
as the walls start closing in

you flushed out all the poison they injected in your brain
you’ve finally cleansed your mind
you’re finally feeling sane
just as you start thinking it’s time to begin again
the walls start closing in
just when you start thinking you are free to fly again
the walls start closing in

This little ditty...
... rocks along quite nicely, putting a big grin on my face. Love your vocals and the sound effects. Shades of Bare Naked Ladies and Fire Sign Theater mixed into the creative music-making of Warren Smith. Very enjoyable. Thanks for the refreshment...

Excellent!
I really like the way you push the envelope - or is it walls this time. Love the very deliberate eastern tinged lead guitar. Definitely not blues based and very much tapping The Residents / Snakefinger in this instance.

Intentions
I keep messing around with sonic effects as part of the soundscape for my songs, but I haven't posted many of those conspicuous efforts here. If there is an Eastern tinge to my guitar work, it's certainly not deliberate, but then I have lost the ability to distinguish sharply between East and West .. and I'm never really sure what might emerge from the effort to develop guitar leads. I stuck it into the blues genre simply because the singer is whining about life : )

Walls Closing In
Great lyrics. Cool bass line and I love the rubbery tone. The backing track and arrangement are the perfect compliments to the vocals and lyrics. Cool guitar lines. Love the backwards effects.

Effective
Thanks for the comments. The goal was to create an impressionistic soundtrack that reflected the lyrical conception .. so it's nice to hear it worked for you that way, too.

Claustrophobic
I just realized that your singing style reminds me of Neil Young. The walls are closing in. What to do? Senior Contemporary hahaha. Yes, I'm soon there.

Voices
While I listen to Neil's work .. I've never made any conscious effort to copy or imitate him .. so it must be coincidence (although others have made the same comparison in the past). There's nothing special about my voice. I mostly concentrate on phrasing. I think my singing (or voice) has somewhat improved with age .. so growing old hasn't been all bad : )

Senior (contemporary) ?
Oh dear and I thought it was just me.

I get those feelings all the time. Or maybe it's just my belly getting bigger.

Nice work Warren. Always entertaining and fun :-)

Cheers

Dick

Aging Issues
Ha-ha Dick .. it's not just you .. were are all in this aging Yellow Submarine together : )

I have always tried to write songs that reflect my contemporary realities. Consequently, I decided it was better to embrace aging issues rather than running and hiding from them. Although now that I've said that, maybe a song about running and hiding from aging issues wouldn't be such a bad concept for a new song.

Like Andrew say...
...that "rubbery tone"--it's like your vocals here have a prehensile tail of some kind--marvelous. Was that done in post production or did you just sing it that way (I'm always curious about these things from a vocal aspect, thanks!) Warren, you've created one of those songs that lyrically and musically deliver what the title says; honest to god, I felt this literally closing in on me! Kind of reminds me of that Roman Polanski film "Repulsion" where to convey the character's madness, he ever so slightly kept moving the walls of the set inward every time they appeared. Great stuff here--I love it! Michael

Vocal experiments
It takes me multiple takes to get a vocal line resolved. Sometime a while ago I started doubling-up those efforts (or tripling them), purposefully leaving in some of the variations. This has led to an effort to learn harmony, which I kind of creep up on now and then. I don't have much of a range, nor do I think my voice sounds all that interesting, but I really enjoy singing, and these developments have made singing and recording a lot more fun. Thanks for the kind comment.

One pill makes you larger ...
Some people take pills to hallucinate .. others take 'em to stop the hallucinations. If you live long enough you might do both : )
