Description
Photographs bring memories back to life. Looking at old photos can give some cause for reflection, which is what this song is about.

The main guitar tracks are played on on a Maton FG 100. There is also a Gibson nylon used on the right track and for the second half of the guitar solo. A fender Stratocaster adds a little colour.

The bass is played by Chris Flynn (Rok41) who once again demonstrates his ability to keep things simple when they need to be and add colour when appropriate - easy to say, not easy to do. I am in awe of his playing.

A little geography: Queenscliff is a beach town a couple of hours out of Melbourne, Australia. It was, and remains, a popular family holiday destination. Warburton is a town in the hills an hour or so east of Melbourne.

I hope you enjoy listening!

Lyrics
I Have A Photograph

Verse 1
I have a photograph,
Taken a while ago
We’re all on a Queenscliff beach
We stayed there a week or so

We’re squinting into the sun
Running across the sand
Swimming in silver seas
Looking young and tanned

Verse 2
I have a photograph
Of you in a small café
Taken in Warburton
one cold and wintry day

We walked down the busy street
Past shops with their welcome lights
Looked at the water wheel
And poles with carvings bright

Middle
And you were always there
In all that I have become
I hope there were times that you
Smiled at what you’d done

Verse 3
I have a photograph,
Of you on your wedding day
The colours are muted now
But this I want to say

The things that were started then
Have carried you many miles
And all that you’ve left behind
Still can make me smile

Great song. The interplay between the guitars bring to mind Jim Croce (Operator). Nice mix. I like the spread between the lead vocal and harmony. Wonderful bass. Really fills it out. Perfect tone!

Thanks
Jim Croce was good, wasn't he. Died too young. I appreciate the comparison - I do like those tinkly layered guitars! Chris's bass? He's masterful! As always, your support is appreciated Andrew.

What a great take on a classic subject
Your guitar arrangement and vocals sit so well together - and you are right Chris is a master of his craft. I had to give this an immediate second listening to figure out when you snuck the keyboard in without me noticing until the end. Tastefully done sir.

Thanks
Glad that you think the vocals and guitars sit well - getting the balance right is always a bit of a challenge for me. The keys I just wanted to add a bit of variety and maybe they could have been up a bit - but I'm pleased that you didn't mind listening a second time! Thanks for listening and for the comments - much appreciated.

Good song, Philip. The central theme has been used in many a fine song, and this continues the tradition. I like how you tie things together with the "middle" bridge/chorus. Nice arrangement and a sympathetic solo. Chris adds the solidity. Jim Croce and Gordon Lightfoot walked into a bar one day... :-) Kudos. Talk soon, Peter.

Philip, the guitar's are dreamy and your vocals are as smooth as butter. The lead is the icing on the cake ... Chris's bass line is quite interesting with the little runs and nuances yet still holds it all together. A fine piece professionally produced. I think we can all relate to the words...
cheers

Hi Stan
Thanks for the comments, Stan. I like idea of dreamy guitars! Yes, Chris just knows when to stretch out a little and when to sit underneath. The words? I'm sure they could be a template for many people as we all look at old photos occasionally and they do stir up some emotions. Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Philip - Chris had mentioned this one to me - said it was one of your finest - I have to concur! Really nice sounding piece. Rich guitars, and your vox have just the right amount of melancholy in the tone for the lyrics and message. Really well done, my friend. Of course, bringing in rok was nothing short of brilliance as well. Great collab, gents!

Hi Sig
I appreciate the comments, Sig -many thanks. I was happy with the guitars - not too cluttered, I thought - and very happy with Chris's work (as always)! Thanks for stopping by!

the melody
certainly promotes nostalgia. felt like the lyrics were moving toward metaphor, but sometimes didn't quite get there -- too many adjectives, i think. just let the things you're describing act -- you don't need to talk about them, so much as allow them to speak for themselves.
