Dirty Hands

So I had this crazy dream, which turned into a crazy idea: I decided to write a song with a lot of Bass in it. A lot. Now, that sounds like a great idea until it’s time to mix it all down. So as usual, I pulled out the trusty ’73 Jazz Bass and recorded a heavy riff – which I mimicked with a second track but added gnarly overdrive...then another counter melodic track. To top all of that off, I used a “pick”, which is an extreme rarity for me. The song took form and I had written some lyrics that worked pretty well with the riff. Man cannot live by Bass alone (or can he?), so I asked Sig to come on board and add some California flavored guitar excellence. Sig, came up with some great guitar ideas for the choruses and his lead guitar work was creative and edgy; exactly what I was looking for. Sig always gives his all when I ask him to collab and he always delivers the goods.

As I said, mixing this was difficult and I still am not 100% happy with it. If you’re “low end” sensitive, this might not be the song for you.. I’m always looking for new ideas when mixing so feel free to chime in.

The song itself touches on addiction, and the direct, negative impact that it can have on family and close friends.

Rok– All vocals, Rhythm Guitars, Keys, Bass, programming, mix and master.
Sigmund – Lead and Rhythm guitar, post production

Lyrics
Dirty Hands

V1
There’s a light on the face of the place I knew once before
And there’s blood on the broken glass, what are you looking for?

There’s a hole in my soul and I’m feeling cast off like a stone
With your toes on the edge you fake it when you’re all alone

And so you took what you thought was mine
How could you ever know?

Chorus
Forget to remember me,
When you’re high on yourself and you’ve pissed it away
Bury your dignity
When it’s breaking you bad, the Devil gives you all you need

V2
There’s a key to the gate of a fate I knew once before
And you’re pulling yourself apart until there’s nothing more

Holding and folding you’re praying it comes back around
Save a smile for the enemy when you’re all safe and sound

And you took what you thought was mine
And you were never found

Chorus
Bridge
Chorus

Never leaving your side, there’s no use trying to hide, Dirty Hands
Never leaving your side, there’s no use trying to hide, Dirty Hands
Never leaving your side, there’s no use trying to hide, Dirty Hands

Almost an overdose of bass frequencies here, so I am glad that you found the low end to your liking. As always, Sig knows just what to say, and how to say it. Thanks again!!

Dude, mixing this was a nightmare - I won't follow the same process again as I left myself at the mercy of a ton of low mids. I'm especially glad you, as an elite bassist, liked the tone. It was fun taking it to the extreme without using a stomp box. Sig also killed those choruses, triplet heaven. Thanks Andrew and I am looking forward to working with you soon.

That's what my approach was on this - Regarding "commercial" - Attribute that to me being 100% of the bassist mindset who grew up loving bands like Zep, Styx, Kansas, Elton John but grew to love bands like King's X and Porcupine Tree. I guess in my head, formulatic structure appeals to my senses. I am a groove guy, so sometimes simpler is better. Always a pleasure to see ya Daug!

Every song we do just gets more and more challenging - and that is what keeps it so much fun! This one was a blast! I always enjoy our collaborations, and this is definitely one I can say I'm super proud to have been a part of. You're a excellent songwriter, and fantastic musician, and a great friend! some straight up lyrics, nice chorus and leading and off course the bass i always haver that problem when mixing I think allot depends on how the live parts were recorded I could be wrong but I listened on head phones and my mac speakers and on both the mix is good , i think that is a hard thing to do great song!

Thanks man! The overdriven bass is the tricky part - saturation in the low mid areas can kill the mix. Glad you enjoyed, thanks so much for listening!

Wow ... I like this. That dirty bass sounds great! It really sets the groove. Guitars sound awesome ... a fine player with some pretty interesting layers. Sits well in the mix considering there is so much low range overall and midrange ... the vocals are out front ... this rocks Chris ... drums? They sound good. You've listened to it too much because the mix sounds real good to my ears.

Dirty Hands (w/Sigmund)
Impact rock of a very high order, Chris. The groove is fantastic but the thing that highlights for me is your vocal work. Really impressed with the layering and how you got it to sit out front of the mix and not be overpowered. Sig is such a creative guitarist. I really like what he brings to any music table. I think the mix/master is top shelf, too. Lots of driving bass but no boominess. Just tight, growling goodness. You should be proud, man. Pro song, worthy of being on any CD (IMHO). Thanks you two. Take care, Peter.

Bass
Really challenging, Peter - the slightest movement of the eq in the low mids had a dramatic effect on the song as a whole - Thanks for the comment on the vocals; it's a work in progress for me - I'm no "singer" but I am trying to tell the story as effectively as possible. A learning experience every time. Sig kills it. Thanks for always listening and for the kind words.

Blimey!
that's some bass!

A very fine vocal and I think the production is spot on.

Everything in it's place.

This is how Cream would have sounded had they had carried on writing (a bit of Jack Bruce never did anyone any harm!)

Cheers

Too much bass ...................
.............. is that even possible? This all sounds pretty fine to me Chris - your vocal reminds me a lot of John Luper (Feel) - I reckon he's one of the more underrated vocalists here on MJ. I can't find any nits to pick here - a very enjoyable composition and performance(s). Sig rips the lead of course. Great post!!!!!

Rocksolid
The bass line carries the song and leaves enough space for some impressive Sigmund guitar action. Rok's vocals are just as confident and I like the synth accents and bike chain sound effect towards the end (is it?!).

Can only imagine what it took mixing this!

Thanks my friend - I dig Sig's ability to adapt to the situation, mood of whatever he's asked to enhance. As you know, all of my songs stat with a riff of some sort - just how I'm wired as a bassist. Sometimes this can be formulatic, but it's all I know. Much appreciated!

I happen to love all the low end. I think this sounds incredible. The bass(es) and guitar parts mesh so well. I wonder if the drums could be a bit more intense during the chorus parts, more crash cymbals or china's, very minor point. Thanks for the download option as that's what I did.
