Description
This one is for my Dad.

A year ago I started doing a day a week in the charity warehouse of our local hospice . As I unloaded vans full of donations I began to realise these were not just unwanted objects I was handling. More often than not they were the ephemera of someone's life in the sense of having no lasting significance to most people but for the owners.

In other words I was unloading a life.

Ornaments and knick-knacks that had no real intrinsic value (and would probably end on a shelf in a hospice charity shop for a pound) once had meaning for someone. A song began to take shape.

I wasn't in the best place at the time as my father was seriously ill and I was spending two days a week travelling 150 miles to see him which was leaving me drained of both energy and creativity.

My father died in September and clearing his house of his ornaments and knick-knacks reignited the song and I started to put some lyrics together and asked my long time writing partner Richard Marris if he would contribute. He did and also got his son Dan to play drums.

Originally I had an idea of a “Present from Rhyl” (it's a Welsh seaside resort) but as I played through the fledgling melody it morphed into a kind of Mexican country style and it became a “Gift From Mexico”. With the American link now fixed I needed an American singer and I approached Terry Pearson who we'd worked with before and thought he'd be perfect. He was. I also asked him for some lyrics.

Then just to complete the ensemble we persuaded Anne Cozean to lend her dulcet tones to the project.

So here we are, a true collaboration and many thanks to all of them for being incredibly patient as I struggled with the arrangement, the mix, the instrumentation and my first song for some considerable time.

Anne: vocals and musical support

Dick: lyrics (verse 1 and 2), main melody, arrangement, nylon strung guitar, bass, slide, strings

Richard: bridge lyrics and melody, acoustic rhythm

Dan: drums (but not verse 2!)

Terry; lyrics (final verse), vocals, harmonica

Bizarrely enough after I started to put together the lyrics and had come up with the china dolls and Mexico idea I was browsing the hospice charity shop and I found the two figures you see in the picture.

A Gift From Mexico © 2015 Langford/Marris/Pearson

You said that they looked pretty and you'd like to take them home
A pair of shiny china dolls on a shelf there all alone
First day of our honeymoon so how could I say no
Here, my dear a gift from Mexico

So every year we'd buy a doll in each place that we'd stay
From Tijuana to the Rockies heights, from Rose Rock to L.A
Each one brought a memory, not always good I know
And it started with that gift from Mexico

And every spring you’d take them down
Wash them carefully
I never really got the point
But now you’re gone I see
It’s little things that make a life
From a honeymoon to a setting sun
A little doll from years ago
I’m back with you in Mexico

From dust to dust, this wheel of life
will spin for all Mankind
And even for our China dolls,
but they will fall behind
And after you and I have gone and
Strangers come along
They'll wipe the dust from our China dolls
But will they hear our song?

knick nacks
Similar in theme to the lyrics my Missus wrote to my song Past/present regarding the little ornaments you refer to and the personal attachment but to the outsider they look like nothing.
Good arrangement and well done for getting the people on board.
If I didn't know that this was one of your songs I wouldn't have guessed but I don't know if that's just because you have a different singer or that it's a bit of a departure from your usual stuff
I think mexico works better than Rhyl..also the only thing you can get in Rhyl is chips, crack and a black eye.
A very enjoyable track.
Sorry to hear of your fathers passing

Thanks Brendan!
Yes it's a bit of a departure from my other songs but then again I've not written about anything like that before. It also grew as everyone put their own ideas in and it turned out very different to how I thought it would.

I did try a British version but all I could come up with was a Gift From Llandudno.

From Newquay Beach to Blackpool's sands from Rhyl to Whitely Bay

Er, not quite....

Thanks for your thoughts as well.

Cheers

Dick

A Gift...
Lovely tune in many respects. Good story in the lyrics and pleasantries to the ear - harmonies, tasty guitars and guitar lead, pristine harmonica and harmonies, among other pleasing tidbits, in presenting them. Unsure, after two listens whether or not the strings help. dl appreciated. Good job everyone!

This song turned out so beautifully, Dick. I'm grateful you asked me on board for this. Your dad would have loved it. Losing my Mom in June made it quite special to me also. Those knick knacks are everywhere.
It's a very well written song, and I'm glad I could throw in a few words of my own. Those guitars are great! You and Richard are a natural team, and working with Anne again was definitely a joy. We had a very talented team here. Terry

Fantastic ... beautifully put together and some inspired playing and singing. I love the harmonica and that cool ahhhh vocal I think Anne is singing. Lovely production. I think Terry's mellow voice fits quite well with Anne ... and love that bit of slide. Solid songwriting and a wonderful tribute to your father.

This is such a romantic, and sad song, beautifully played and sung. Terry's vox shine on this, and Anne's harmonies go so well with Terry's lead. The music is wonderful, and everyone played their parts to perfection. A really enjoyable piece, Dick - congrats on a successful collab.

There's a lot of stuff Vic
most of it we don't "need" but some things (often the most trivial items) hold memories and the idea of them having a new life is somehow comforting.

Thanks a lot for listening and commenting and I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

A Gift
I like like this! Such clever lyrics and very well put together. I can relate to the sentiments. They strike a chord. I lost my mother in 2011 and as she was the last of the 'old ones' to die, she had inherited ALL the other relatives knick-nacks. It was a sad time rooting through them all. If I'd have written this, it would have been the King and Queen of Hearts. I kept them! Memories are sad.

Present from Rhyl simply wouldn't work, btw! Anyway, great song.

Memories are sad but can also be positive. In the end all we have are memories. Our own and what folks remember of us.

It must have been hard for your mum being the last in line as it were. I hope her memories were good.

Beautiful!
This resounds with a sentiment and feeling that readily struck a chord within me. I think we also have had that feeling when we come across a little knick-knack or something we treasured at one time and kind of put away for a while. So many emotions and memories come flooding in when that happens. It's happened to me many times lately. This is so very lovely--everybody here, take a well-deserved bow! And thank you Dick for helping others--there should be more like you in this world. Michael

The idea...
...behind this lovely song is so absolutely special and so unusual, too. It is a sad yet important commentary on the importance of special things in our lives and why the treasures of one man (and woman) can (and do) enlighten the lives of everyone who touches those treasures in some way, physically or emotionally. ... This composition and arrangement is deceptively simple, an achievement that comes from the careful attention given to your lyrics and the uncluttered rendition of the vocal melody as well as to the careful choices and subtle performances in instrumentation, back-up harmonies, and in the ultimate mix of all the elements. It's really kind of a perfect song: an important narrative, an uncomplicated melody, a performance that is carefully orchestrated and rendered. I think we'll all be hearing this song long after the commentaries fade. It is THAT kind of special gem. Congratulations to all.

You have a way with words Paul
Many thanks for those comments and I am almost lost for words.

I am genuinely surprised at the reaction to this song as I felt that perhaps I'd taken the schmaltz factor too far although perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised as Richard, Terry and Anne warmly embraced the concept.

The most insignificant items can take on real and deep meaning and I think that touches us all.

Many thanks again for your support.

great work everyone - wonderful tune Dick. Solid proof that despite the ups and downs and bumps along the way there is no place like this place we get to call home for our musical inspirations. So much talent - without he egotistical posturing one might expect from a bunch of artists. Very cool example of how to do it right.

Nostalgia
You know I'm not sure this is nostalgic although I know what you mean. I think it's a universal condition. We all hold memories whether they be good or bad and we know it's better to have good ones and these china dolls bring back the memories of a life with all it's highs and low and I think that has resonance for everybody.

Thanks so much for your comments Maurice.

I think the names that sound commonplace to you and I sound exotic elsewhere, so Newquay to Whitely Bay would be just fine. (I would steer clear of Twatt, though.) That's probably politically incorrect these days.....

You may be right but I think you have to go a long way (sorry, not punny) to beat names like Tijuana or Rose Rock.

That's a fine selection of knick-knacks Graham (oo-er missus). They'll be worth money in the future. I was told an old Star Wars toy was sold for hundreds of pounds recently.

Beautiful
Dick, what a beautiful story behind the origins of this song. It's such a sad, but true observation about the ephemera of our lives mattering so much until the moment we die when it becomes meaningless. That moment in between, though, when it's all that left for the people who remember us, that's really special. I love, love, love the way the song opens up when Anne's backing vocals come in. It just soars then. Fantastic lyrics and such a charming, warm, story-telling vocal from Terry.

Ephemera
I hadn't really given it much thought before I began unloading people's lives from the back of a van. Then I got to wondering why they might have bought such "unattractive" things and then I realised that there was probably a story behind almost everything.

My mum and dad had lots of brass figures (a few of which I saved) and I seem to remember they started collecting them on holiday one year and every year they'd get a new one. To us they just cluttered up the mantlepiece but then I began to understand the meaning. Intangible but still real.

In many ways the song is about me and in the end I guess it's about everyone and perhaps that's why it's struck a chord. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to write something like it again and I couldn't have done it anyway without Terry, Richard and Anne.

Thanks for the comments on the song. Anne has a way of bringing out the best in any song and Terry was my first thought when the song seemed to jump the ocean!

Thanks again.

Cheers

Dick
