So Typical

Description
Another oldie, slightly re-worked. I'm always shocked at how bad my old mixes sound. I guess that means I'm learning. I suppose two years down the road this will sound like a mess, too. Well, we do what we can. This one features loud drumming, sloppy guitars, indecisive time signatures, wahwahing, oddly-timed cymbal crashing, whammying, high frequencies, complaints, deconstruction, and a brief revival.

Credits:

Les ------- guitar playing, programming
Epanody --- sporadically complaining (freesound, thank you very much)
Melissa ---- smirking
Skippy ----- TV binge watching

As always, critiques are welcomed.

I too am reworking some of my older stuff, at least the stuff worth reworking. I like the headroom in this mix - I never feel stretched here. Of course I dig that Porcupine Tree bass/drum feel. Creative panning ideas with the guitar create interest. Prog at it's core, love it, Les.

Hi, Chris
I guess I was feeling the nostalgia, and listened to some old Reggie tunes that were on an external drive. I couldn't resist polishing a little, then decided to re-post some of them --- a couple more on the way probably. Good to hear that I'm not the only one with this habit. Looking forward to your future posts. And thanks for the comments.

Hi, Andrew
I thought this one was pretty straightforward actually. But I'll happily take your assessment. Thanks much.

a testament to how worthwhile it is to go into the vault from time to time. Puts me in the mind of YES (best compliment ever), and like many of their songs, this is a fascinating, complex and totally engaging ride. Love the "so typical" statements. heh. congrats on this!

Hi, Karen
I've been fairly unproductive as of late, so mining the archive has been fun. I can't resist re-working some of my old favorites. I'm glad you liked this.

Brilliant? Ehhh, maybe not. But it's not so bad, either. I enjoyed playing around with it. Thanks very much for your generous appraisal.

Hello, Kenta
Re-working is about the only musical thing I've been doing lately. Trying to bring out the way I wanted it to be on the first place. Still learning. Glad you liked it. Thanks!

I really like the sound of your guitars
What kind of settings did you have on the rhythm guitar? Cool tune and I'm glad you brought it back.

Hi, John
I used a Boss GT-8 to get the guitar sounds, then direct to the ADC, no amp. There are endless variations possible. I just fiddle with it until I either get something I like or I just give up and go with whatever. I have no idea exactly what settings I used, since I don't keep notes. Anyway, thanks for the comments. Glad you liked it.

the thing about mixing is
as time goes by technology changes so what would have been a gret mix a few years back might not be as good as how you can mix now , what am talking about and yes if I may be typical great song!
Again thanks for the download!

Hey, Tim
I guess that's true, but the technology that I use isn't much different than years ago. I dunno. I think my standards and tastes might have changed. A lot of what I have to do is unclutter the arrangements. I used to overstuff, and I don't want to do that so much these days. Anyway, I think this piece is pretty simple compared to most of my other crap, so it was easy to clean. A couple more oldies on the way probably.

Typewriter guitars
Great drums on this: the unexpected but perfectly placed changeups kept me grounded. More 'Lamb' era Genesis than YES to my ears (especially in the synths). Digging the change in temperature in the middle too, you're among the best at pacing the journey through the song. Excellent resolution into the barcode at the end!

Thanks for the comment on the drum track. I always have fun with that. I don't hear Yes or Genesis at all in my work, but since they are two of my favorites, I always appreciate the comparisons. They are too far beyond my meager abilities to emulate. As far as the pacing, if I were to critique this, I would say that the final change to the outro was not slick enough, then ended too abruptly. But the piece is not substantial enough to give it a lot more time. It was just some fun. Thanks for the nice comments!

I could be as sloppy as this.

Amazingly full and detailed sound.

Fine guitar slinging :-)

A little slop is good, but usually not intentional. The fixed-to-the-grid software musicians can hold it together well enough, and I can slop all over the rhythm track and mostly get away with it. I think my rhythm guitars are offensively sloppy, but it's hard to hear, so no harm, no foul. Anyway, thanks for the nice words.

Hi, Steve
Yeah, I'm on a mission to redo some of my old RP favorites, and ignore the ones that sucked eggs. Please pardon my indulgence. I had the experience of recovering a lot of my old files, and found the mixes to be mostly cringeworthy, and I just couldn't let it pass. A couple more re-works in the pipeline, then on to new things (I hope).

loud drumming, sloppy guitars, indecisive time signatures, wahwahing, oddly-timed cymbal crashing, whammying, high frequencies, complaints, deconstruction, and a brief revival.... always works for me and we have skippy to keep us abreast on dancing with the wannabes.

All the necessary ingredients
to make a mess of things. Sometimes it turns out OK. "Dancing with the wannabes" hahaha. High culture, indeed. I think Skippy was binge-watchng Mad Men, which isn't quite the affront to civilization ... but still.

Classic artwork. The kick and bass dominance gives this a metal/prog edge. Mix is sounding good. I like the solidity and definition. Sounding trés good through the 'phones. Thanks for the re-boot, Les. Regards, Peter.

I've tried
to rework some of my own "oldies", but I seem to go over the top and it never comes to anything. Instead I've learnt to listen to the old stuff for what it is. And take Beatles, their stuff isn't always so very well recorded/mixed either, but somehow it still works (at least most of the time ;-).

Anyway, you seem to be on top of your own stuff. Nice to listen to these "cleaned" versions! Enjoyed a lot!

Thanks and take care,
Henke
