SHINY LOVE w Anne Cozean

Get Flash to see this player.

After a month or two with the backing tracks mainly completed, I was still stuck for a vocal melody and lyrics, so I sent the backer to Anne Cozean in California to see if she had any ideas - she did, and here they are!

Anne and I have collaborated quite a number of times - on my songs and recordings by Jack Hemby, Terry Pearson and RT Cooper. It is always a blast ..... and she always seems to come up with good song titles ;)

This is possibly the first song I've written on piano - with a little help from iReal Pro.

Shiny Love © 2015 Anne Cozean (lyrics and vocal melody), Neil Porter (music)

listen to me boy
cuz you need to know
what we had together
has lost all its glow

we have been coasting
for much too long
cuz somewhere along the way
love went all wrong

this game has run its course for me
a life with you is not to be

you say you'll change now
you've seen the light
the odds of that happening
are very slight

listen to me now
let me be clear
you have to go
and i'm staying here

the magic we once made is gone
i think it's time that we moved on

i used to love you once, it's true
but in my heart i know that we are through

listen to me boy
don't waste my time
cuz i don't want love
if it's not gonna shine

Shiny, but so smooooth...
Neil's got such a smooth kind of retro 70s rhythm going back there, how could someone not sing to it? Anne's vocals just slide right over the top, with a playful little sizzle just behind the words. Very nice!

Enjoyed it guys. Thanks for sharing!

Shiny Love
You get such a bright, clean sound in your recordings, Neil. Excellent arrangement and Anne's vocal is superb. I like the riff running through the song. Ending a bit abrupt? Quality work!

What an infectious groove you have here, Neil! Great music, and Anne fell so naturally into it. The moral of this story: Keep it shining and you won't get a "Dear John" letter! Wonderful melody and lyrics from Anne. Much enjoyed! d/l'ed!

Pro sounding
upfront sound that takes hold when I hit the play button. I wish I could find the limiter setting in logic to match the one you're using in Ozone. You can't go wrong with Anne on the vocals, she does a fine job as expected. Keys, the fine panned out guitar, percussion and bass surround the vocals perfectly. Another fine song/collab from Mr. Porter and Mrs. Cozean.

Wow, what a great mix! Very rich and articulate. Anne not only has a great voice, but her sense of timing and phrasing is always really good. Fantastic guitar work, both rhythm and lead. I hear the phrase "radio ready" alot on this site, but I think this one is the real deal. Great post! By the way Neil, did you use an Ozone Preset on this? I kind of doubt it, because I haven't heard one that sounds this complete, but interested to know.

Thanks Chris
I'm using a preset that I set up when I first started using Ozone 5, with adjustments to just about all settings. It gives me great output punch with warmth, but without pushing any of the individual tracks too far. It took ages to get it right. From memory, I probably started from one of the more complex "rock" presets.
The best preset I used here though is the "Big Sis" vocal preset which always works perfectly ;)
Thanks for your listen and comment.

More info
This preset was set up using Steely Dan's "Gaslighting Abby" as an EQ match. The Drummer is Gavin using the SoCal kit in "Fixie", "Grand Avenue" and "Skinny Tie" modes.

Hmm... classy work!
Cool and very shiny indeed.

Wonderful work from Anne (then again I expect nothing else!) and it's a very fine production.

Tight and clean.

Bond Theme
This is one sexy little groove. Anne sounds super slinky and immediately brought to mind the opening credits of a Bond movie. Lady, you had me in the palm of your hand the whole time. I agree with the people who said this sounds so great, production-wise. It's also a rock-solid piece of songwriting and you guys should be proud of it. Thanks for the tip on iReal Pro, Neil. It's amazing the tools that are out there compared to when MJ first started!

This is truly a fine groove. Love the EL Piano and Anne's vocals are smooth.
Like the percussive nuances ... I think it would have been nice to change the drums in the chorus with more emphasis on the ride on the beat. Well mixed and well produced.

You did the right thing here Neil
this tune was built for Anne and she delivered as she always does. Nice keys. It's the solid, melodic bass that makes this stick. That and the ear worm rhythm guitar lick. Nice.

SHINY LOVE w Anne Cozean
Wow. Anne's buttery vocals are the shining star here. The whole thing just oozes with a sultry glow that is at home at any space-age bachelor pad. The arrangement, performances and mix are all top notch. The guitar lead at 2:21 is a tasty tour accented oh so sparingly showing passion and restraint. Great work all around. I can see why you guys have top billing on the charts this week!

Catchy riff to kick things off and then Anne's sensuous vocals announce themselves and I'm hooked. Fine music bed for Anne to paint on, Neil. Mix is warm and dynamic. Agree re the Bond theme analogy. Fab collab. Kudos to both of you. Regards, Peter.

Love Boat
You've got that cool 70s "Love Boat" thing going on here. every element works on this track: terrific vocals, that swirling organ in the background (is that what it is?), excellent guitar solos, and generally classy band backup that hardens to a few decades ago. And what a good mix, too. Stellar work, Neil and Anne. such a pleasure to hear such finely-produced music.
