Description
Another in my stream of songs that have been languishing on my HD waiting for vocals. So, I just had to bite the bullet and start singing again, certainly not my strong suit. But, that's what it's about here, right? Just put it out there, learn and get better. This song features Sonny Jim on the slinky backing vocals and my brother Andrew on lead guitar. The rest, the bass, keys, mixing, is me. I used the new "drummer" feature on Logic Pro X on this. I have to say that new aspect of Logic is pretty killer. I did notice though that on "offline" bounce a couple artifacts/stutters were recorded on the drum track, so I had to bounce it in "realtime". Just a heads up for any other Logic X newbies out there. Something to watch for.

Also, I've started cross posting on SoundCloud as well:
https://soundcloud.com/philipvandusen
https://soundcloud.com/etherworks

Here's my profile if anyone else is branching out. I welcome new followers and will follow in return. It's sad to say, but you never know when MJ is going to finally "break" and go poof. Not a welcome thought, I've had some great years here. But you have to admit the writing is on the wall and has been for quite a while. You gotta start hedging your bets.

As always, I welcome constructive criticism on the mix.

Lyrics
Thinking Backwards
©2015 SonnyJim

We're all standing for the one who can
Dry your eyes and stand you up a man.
No point walking backwards
No point wondering about the also-rans.

Maybe he'll move you.
Maybe.

Can you take direction, meet  the goal?
With precise dissection we'll be whole.
No point thinking backwards.
Feel him pour his sunshine in your soul.

Great mix
The vocals aren't bad either. Sam (Dixon) encouraged me to persevere, and I'm doing likewise - they're fine. I also like the guitar - I'm sick of weedle - dee, even though I'm still trying to learn how to do it.

Great Mix
Thanks so much for the listen and the encouragement. Singing is such a struggle. If it wasn't for double/triple tracking and pitch correction, all I would do are instrumentals!

Go get 'em. Non-singers of the world unite!

There's a cool 60s vibe here. Double tracked lead vocal, lush backing vocals, twangy tremolo guitar, the organ swells all scream London and San Francisco. Meanwhile the bright grinding bass recalls a completely different era, almost a modern metal timbre. All the same it completely rocks. Great mix too.

Thanks. I think the guitar tone is what really pushes it to the retro 60's genre, even though that's not what I intended at all when I did it. My brother Andrew is a guitar tone monster with a killer lefty Tele that he wields like a sword. And Sonny Jims backing vocals are the gravy, as always!

a 2-fer
just listened to the previous song. the contrast between the two is great.
this one has that kinda '60's rock, semi psychedelia flavor along on the line of yardbirds and amboy dukes

Agree with the Yardbirds reference, although I never listened to them as a tyke, I was just a little too young. I like how Andrew wove the guitars together. I appreciate the listen Vic, I always welcome constructive critique from you - if you wanna pick at it a little...

I love the sound you got here - live and hot
but not over modulated - just the right amount of drive to just it along. Your singing is excellent - conviction is all it takes to be a good singer in my book and you let go on this. Andrew's lead is killer and the space you gave it was good. Good mix to top it all off.

Thanks Kev. I really hear you about the "conviction" being the key to a vocal. Even if you're bad, it you really sell it, sometimes that will put it over the hurdle. I used this thought for my next submission "The Road Back". I actually went back and redid the vocals after I read your comment. They were weenie sounding - and I went back to them with conviction, and it really helped, but you be the judge...

This is terrific RR! Cool harmonies, confident vocals and I LOVE the organ! And along with everything else, those are darned good lyrics too! I'm off to listen to the original - sounds like a fun comparison. Great to have you back around here posting music!

If there is one thing I am worse at than singing, it's keyboards. So you are very kind in your comment about the organ, coming from a master such as yourself. Keep the shiney side up! Spring might bring a new moto for me. Had to sell the Victory and I think a Triumph is in the cards!...

You're too kind. I appreciate the props and the listen! The bass was a blast to do, but a bitch to EQ. I'm just learning how to carve out EQ sectors for specific instruments to avoid muddiness.

The personality of voice
This is a melody that will stick with you long after the song has ended. I know this because after listening to it I went for a five-block walk to a grocery store and I hummed it the entire way.

There's something about singing can be both embarrassing and wonderful at the same time. To me, your voice sounds strong, rich, articulate and in tune here. Certainly far more wonderful than anything embarrassing. What comes through is its character .. adding a distinct element of personality to the piece.

Thanks Warren. Songs and hook rarely stick in my head for some reason, but this one did. For days! I had to mix it to get it to go away! Thanks for the encouragement. Love your last song: "Itch you can't scratch!"

I like this
Production sounds terrific Philip - original style in a psychedelic mould really works. No nits at all with this, just solid throughout. Congratulations to all involved.

Right outta the 60s, except the production is better. The organ is choice, and the harmony vocals are a definite highlight. Great work to all involved.

Cool groove
I like the attitude of this song and the slightly dark feel of the tune. Vocals are cool to me. Harmonies are nice. I too am slogging through some half finished songs that need vocals to be complete. Bit the bullet for sure. I have some of the your older stuff on my playlist and have been absent at MJ for a long time, so its nice to hear something new. Best of luck.

Welcome back. We all have to bite the bullet and get some more content on this site. It needs help. I refuse to admit it is flagging and possibly on it's last legs. It would be such a shame it see it fade away. We have to encourage new blood and revitalize the old tired blood!

this reminds me a bit of bowie for some reason. excellent tune.
vocals are totally respectable in my opinion -- the backup vocals and harmonies are especially nice. guitar break at 2 minutes is awesome.

Thanks! Bowie? Really? Can't hear that, but then I never was a huge Bowie fan. When I collab'ed with Echoroom, we ALWAYS got the Bowie comments because, well he sounds almost exactly like Bowie!
Thanks for the listen and the support bro!
