Description
Last year Jude and I flew from Melbourne across to Broome for the first time. The plane flight is around 4 and a half hours non-stop diagonally across the middle of Australia, with well over three-quarters of the flight over desert. I took some photos as we crossed the Great Sandy Desert (see one above) and I remember thinking at the time how majestic is looked from the air, but how tough it must be to survive down there in reality. Temperatures average over 40º Celsius in the summer months and it is as remote a part of Australia as you could find.

Aboriginal people have survived there for ten’s of thousands of years.

Recently our gaffe prone, “suppository” of all wisdom, Prime Minister Tony Abbott, did what he always does, and tried to trivialise the complex problem of servicing aboriginal people who wish to live a more traditional existence in remote desert communities, as it being a “lifestyle choice" they have made, so it shouldn’t be subsidised by the Australian people.

Funnily enough, many members of the Australian community have responded to these comments with significant condemnation.

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread...

Most of us probably think of a lifestyle choice as selling the family home in the suburbs and moving to a smaller coastal community for a “sea change”. Or the similarly named move to a small country property for a “tree change”.

The “lifestyle choice" that many remote aboriginal people face, referred to by our PM, is between living a traditional style life on their ancestral land or being forced to move to the outskirts of larger towns and living on the margins of those societies, awash with major drug, alcohol and health issues. Some choice.

My contact with aboriginal people has been fairly limited, and I don’t claim to have any special insights into their culture, or their problems, but it just seems that they have been getting the wrong end of the stick ever since Europeans stuck a flag on aboriginal land and proclaimed it as their own (Terra Nullus). And it shows no signs of changing any time soon...

Anyway, the trip and our PM’s inane penchant of trying to explain away everything using three word slogans led to this song.

Albert Namatjira was a prominent Aboriginal artist and a pioneer of contemporary Indigenous Australian art.

The Martu are an aboriginal people of the western deserts.

Paul Reed Smith Angelus acoustic with AKG condenser mics. Single-take vocal and guitar tracks tidied up in Logic Pro 10.1 and mastered with Ozone 6.1.

I think this song could arrange up to a band number, as well, but I wanted to post it while the issue was still topical “down under”.

See what you think.

Regards,

Peter

Lyrics
Fools and Angels - Peter Bowen (March 2015)

ACF D C D [Dm7] [Em7]
EF D E D [Dm7] [Em7]

[Dm7] [Em7]
Soaring like an eagle; Qantas up to Broome
Great Sandy Desert far below; waiting to consume

Muted pastel, red and brown; Terra firma theme
From 30,00 feet above; A Namatjira dream

Chorus1
[Gm] But down there on the [Dm] bedrock
[C] It’s as hot as [Dm] hell
[Gm] A land where fools and [Bb] angels dare not [A7] dwell

ACF D C D [Dm7] [Em7]
EF D E D [Dm7] [Em7]

[Dm7] [Em7]
Dusty, serpent waterways; Remnants of an inland sea
Eerie bloodwoods gnarled in pain; pray for rain and clemency

But out there in the distance; stands a man alone
Martu on a walkabout; this land is his home

Chorus 2
[Gm] Down there on the [Dm] bedrock
[C] It’s as hot as [Dm] hell
An [Gm] ancient land, his [Bb] people know so [A7] well

Lead over a verse

Chorus1
[Gm] Down there on the [Dm] bedrock
[C] It’s as hot as [Dm] hell
[Gm] A land where fools and [Bb] angels dare not [A7] dwell

[Dm7] [Em7]
Connection with the land; Nomadic harmony
Terra Nullus scam; White Man tyranny
Sacred spirit stand; Rainbow Serpent plea
“Lifestyle” reprimand; Remote community
Will they ever understand? Dreamtime eulogy
Connection with the land
Connection with the la......nd

Your primeminister could learn a lot from these people who respect mother Earth
my country is only 200 by 300 km, so you can imagine I'm in awe of the greatness of the bush :-)

Exploit
Aboriginal people lived in harmony with the land for thousands of years. Now we want to just dig everything up and exploit it. There are probably cattle stations bigger than the Netherlands :-) Thanks for the support and the D/L, KC. Take care. Peter

This could just as easily been about American Indian tribes and how "they have been getting the wrong end of the stick ever since Europeans stuck a flag on (their) land and proclaimed it as their own." Well done my friend!

Colonised...
I agree, Andrew. It seems that it is the lot of all traditional owners of land to come off second best when they get "colonised". Glad you thought this turned out okay. I still have to record a demo of the song I think we should do together. I will get on to it. Take care, Peter.

Antithesis
Thanks, Vic. Material and financial wealth are the drivers of our society these days. Traditional aboriginal culture was the antithesis of this. Glad you liked the lyrics, I think I will upsize this to a full arrangement :-) Take care, Peter.

Fool and Angels
I like the lyrics - good mixture of observation and comment. I like the feel of the song too - I got a bit of "Horse With No Name" at times. Crisp guitar and clean vocals. As you suggest, this song might provide a time to get the band back together? Impressive work!

Thanks. Shouldn't that be "Kangaroo With No Name" :-) I was thinking whilst writing this that this should really be a Great Southern Band song. I will see if Neil is up for it. Talk soon, Peter.

great song Peter, good to read about your inspiration to compose this wonderful tune.
Great lyrics and singing, love the minor chords used and playing to create a great mood and vibe here.

All it takes...
Thanks, Bob. Yes, it is interesting how songs evolve. All it takes is some stupidity from politicians... Which means I should be able to write a song a day :-) I appreciate your kind words and support, as always. Take care, Peter

Didgeridoo To You, Too
Mellow song about a turbulent proposition... nicely done, Peter.

Mellifluous vocal over a pleasant progression (yes, somewhat reminiscent of America's *Horse,* but only in feel).

The EQ on the guitar makes it sound a bit lackluster and flat underneath that rich vocal, but as a basic track, it can be enhanced.

This is definitely a candidate for a bigger arrangement... and if you do, may I suggest a bit of plaintive didgeridoo to punctuate some of the more poignant observations. ;)

Up the flagpole
Thanks, J.A. It looks like the Great Souther Band (Neil, Philip and I) are going to run this up the flagpole as a full arrangement so that should be fun. And, yes, some didgeridoo is definitely on the cards. I appreciate your insights and kind words. Take care, Peter.

Down there on the bedrock
A rather heavy subject, but I did enjoy reading about the background. Great vocal and guitarwork as usual, and I love the chorus, "But down there on the bedrock, it's as hot as hell..." just gives me chills. Keep'em coming. Cheers.

PPP's
Thanks, Graham. The public pronouncements of politicians are a rich vein to explore in songwriting. And (un)fortunately our current PM provides fodder, every day. The PRS Angelus is a fantastic guitar. I am lucky to have come by one. I appreciate you dropping by. Regards, Peter.

Fools and Angels
Nice tune, Peter, and a relevant topic that transcends borders - we could easily be talking about any number of American cultures - north, central or south - destroyed or assimilated. It seems those dastardly Europeans really got around. Enjoyed this tune, my friend - thanks for posting!

Havoc
Thanks, Sig. Yes, those "stick a flag on it and we own it" Europeans managed to reap havoc wherever they went. Aboriginal people are still living with the repercussions. Glad you liked this song. The Great Southern Band - Neil, Philip and I :-) are going to try and wrap a full arrangement around it. Take care. Talk soon, Peter.
