Description
About 35 years ago I wrote "Before The Dawn" for my girls choir at the high school where I was teaching. The number was published in 1989, but I don't believe there's ever been a recording of it. A little over a year ago, one of my former students (now a junior high choral teacher) wrote to me and asked about the song and wondered if there was a recording, since she wanted to teach it to her students. So, that evening I made what is probably the one and only recording of this simple little piece. I hope you will enjoy listening to it so many years after its creation. And, as always, if you are interested in seeing the score, it can be found here: http://www.paulpage.org/Secular_Choral_files/Before%20The%20Dawn.pdf

Lyrics
Hear the whippoorwill. He's whistlin' quite a song.
Happy must he be. Now won't you sing along?
Let your heart be light; let ev'ry care fade fast away.
Let the peaceful dawn fill up your life today.

Hear the summer wind warm with the scent of dawn.
Hear the rush of leaves swept 'cross the ground like a song.
There's a secret hiding in the calm before the sun.
Try to catch it now before the day is done.

Dawn begins the day, begins a bright new sun light.
Dawn begins a new and diff'rent time for life.
Let your heart be lifted; don't you cry
For the sunlight will open up your eyes.

Wish there was a way to open up your mind.
Oh, the happy things I'll bet that I could find.
Let your heart be light; let ev'ry care fade fast away.
Let the peaceful dawn fill up your life today.

It’s so clear
why that this sweet number would echo in your student’s heart after all these years and rekindle this lovely ballad.
A sweet rendition Paul, lovely singing as well.
Cheers,
Charlie

Before The Dawn
Great to hear another of your vocal numbers, Paul. The gentle lyrics and melody flow beautifully. Great to hear that you had such a lasting, positive impact on one of your students. I'm sure there are many, many others, too. Take care, Peter.

In the hope of enjoying it?
Sometimes you are too modest.

Simple for you perhaps but for the rest of us it's a beautifully judged and performed song.

Cheers

Whippoorwills
hang about outside our bedroom and make weird noises in the dead of night. It's a haunting sound, rather like your song. It sounds like a benediction.

Rising before dawn
The secret of rising before dawn is, of course .. the early bird catches the worm : )

Your song is heartwarming .. but even more heartwarming has to be that a former student sought out a recording of it 35 years after the fact. That's amazing!
