Fools&Angels(Philip,Neil)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
I posted a solo acoustic song several weeks ago that was ripe for the Great South Band (Neil, Philip and I) to work into a full arrangement.

We all have Logic Pro 10.1 so we used a collaboration method that involved us all working on the same logicx file via Dropbox. This worked very well, as you could see what everyone was doing re their tracks settings, etc. I think it turned out to be quite a learning experience for all of us.

The caveat is that you need to be careful to not be working on, and trying to save, the song at the same time. Apart from a few hiccups, this worked well.

Neil (jiguma): bass, keys, drum tweaks, backing vocals, mix, master
Philip(18): Lots of guitars, including all lead guitars ☺, backing vocals, mix advice
Peter: lyrics, melody, lead vocal, backing vocals, central acoustic guitar, initial Logic Drummer track, didgeridoo loops, mix

Recorded in Logic Pro 10.1.1 and mastered with Ozone 5.

The back story to the song is with the original version.

Artwork: http://www.artistfootsteps.com/images/Namatjira_nga_westernmacdonnell.jpg

Anyway, see what you think. All comments and constructive criticism most welcome.

For your listening pleasure, the Great South Band presents: “Fools and Angels” ☺

Fools and Angels - Peter Bowen (March 2015)

ACDFDCD [Dm7] [Em7]
FEDED [Dm7] [Em7]
ACDFDCD [Dm7] [Em7]
AGFEGD [Dm7] [Em7]

[Dm7] [Em7]
Soaring like an eagle; Qantas up to Broome
Great Sandy Desert far below; waiting to consume

Muted pastel, red and brown; Terra firma theme
From 30,00 feet above; A Namatjira dream

Chorus1
[Gm] But down there on the [Dm] bedrock
[C] It’s as hot as [Dm] hell
[Gm] A land where fools and [Bb] angels dare not [A7] dwell

ACDFDCD [Dm7] [Em7]
FEDED [Dm7] [Em7]

[Dm7] [Em7]
Dusty, serpent waterways; Remnants of an inland sea
Eerie bloodwoods gnarled in pain; pray for rain and clemency

But out there in the distance; stands a man alone
Martu on a walkabout; this land is his home

Chorus 2
[Gm] Down there on the [Dm] bedrock
[C] It’s as hot as [Dm] hell
An [Gm] ancient land, his [Bb] people know so [A7] well

Lead over a verse

Chorus1
[Gm] Down there on the [Dm] bedrock
[C] It’s as hot as [Dm] hell
[Gm] A land where fools and [Bb] angels dare not [A7] dwell

[Dm7] [Em7]
Connection with the land; Nomadic harmony
Terra Nullus scam; White Man tyranny
Sacred spirit stand; Rainbow Serpent plea
“Lifestyle” reprimand; Remote community
Will they ever understand? Dreamtime eulogy
Connection with the land
Connection with the la...nd

Thanks Peter
Despite the one little glitch in the process we used (ie using a logic file on DropBox for mixing), it worked surprisingly well.
i really enjoyed doing this - a terrific song and some very tasty playing and singing from you and Philip.

Smoke and mirrors
Thanks, Dick. Yeah, the collab method was quite successful (with the caveat above). If you save a Logic Project as a folder, zip the folder and then put it up in a shared Dropbox folder, it can be unzipped in situ and then all three of you have access to the logic file and all the individual aif tracks and settings via your own local mirror of the central folder. As long as you work on it one at a time, you are all working on the same project because any changes made locally are mirrored back to the cloud Dropbox folder and then updated on each persons local machine. i.e. it is all smoke and mirrors :-). Anyway, it worked! Glad you liked what we came up with. Take care, Peter.

Stellar work
I work collaboratively with other visual artists using Photoshop via Dropbox and we always save a new version, i.e., 1.2, 1.3, etc., to avoid saving over the other person's work. I haven't tried it with music. It sounds like you guys worked out a method to collaborate without treading on each other's tracks. Cool. It's great to explore new ways of making music.

This came off magnificently .. a wonderful expansion of your originally-fine solo song. Such a stellar example of why MacJams is still a vibrant community.

Special
Thanks, Warren. I agree re MJ. There are some naysayers but for those of us who still actively write, record, collab and listen to the fine music produced here, this site is vibrant and special. Getting to work with such fine musicians as Philip and Neil in real time, even though we were situationally deficient :-), is just great. Glad it came across okay. Take care, Peter.

GSB IV :-)
Thanks, Chris. Move over Little River Band we're coming at ya :-) Yeah, we wish. Who can ever forget the eponymous first track of their self-titled first album "It's a Long Way There". It is still one of my favourite songs. 8.39 minutes of brilliance. They got a bit smaltzy later on but they were very good early.
This is actually the fourth GSB song on MJ (the others were Life Sailors, Don't Look So Surprised and Sailor's Warning) and it is always great fun to work with Philip and Neil. Glad you liked the result. We appreciate you dropping by. Take care, Peter.

love the progressive minor groove running through this.
your vocal delivery is really spot on peter - you make it sound so effortless like you're doing something else, and it's all pouring out as a matter of fact. that isn't to say it's not heartfelt - far from it.....total conviction.
really impressive fleshed out mix by neil....warm and enveloping....cosy and cool. love the ending....jiggery-doo

Iconic
Thanks, Julian. Yeah that simple [Im7, IIm7] progression has been the backbone of many songs (e.g. Moondance) and it really works as a groove setter. Glad you liked how this turned out. I appreciate your kudos re the vocal work and the quality of the mix. I think we managed to the 5 guitars, bass, organ and drums not treading on each others' toes, too much. The didge is such an iconic instrument, too. It instantly sets a sense of place. The dudes from down under appreciate your listen and support. Take care, Peter.

Tops...!!!
You guys know what you're doing: excellent song to start with; poetic lyrics; wonderfully clear vocal (and so pleasant to listen to); and a near-perfect mix of all elements so that nothing gets buried or seems superfluous. This is quite an amazing collaboration. Part of that has to do with your individual talents, but much of it has to do with your willingness to work so carefully together. The result is a little piece of magic that I have enjoyed hearing this evening. Wow.

Fabulous work. Excellent collab. Fascinating lyrics. I've been aware of, though certainly not knowledgeable about, the Aboriginal plight ever since I heard The Dreaming by Kate Bush. I wondered what in the world she was singing about. Then that one by Midnight Oil. Hell of a thing. I know nothing, other than to draw a possible parallel with Native American tribes during the westward expansion. I know a bit more about that. Anyway, fine work, gents.

Glad To Hear...
... this collaboration worked out so well --- and that the didgeridoo made the *cut.*

This is not what I Imagined when you discussed a bigger production for the original acoustic version, but it's not at all a disappointment. Indeed, it's very well done, with some of the guitar work reminding me of Adrian Belew and the Sultans of Swing.

I would have opted for an unamplified acoustic guitar bed that would have given this track a bit more of warmth to match the vocal and more of an acoustic/electric balance, which I imagined as germane to the subject matter of the lyric... just my personal vision of the song.

That being said, I really DO like this version and you guys did a great job fleshing it out. ;)

Taking advantage
Thanks for coming back second time round for the bigger arrangement, J.A. I am sure there are a myriad of ways most songs can be arranged. This version is probably just as much a case of taking advantage of the talents of Philip and Neil, as anything else. It would, (hopefully) sound okay with a more acoustic setting, too. And yes, the didgeridoo is such a distinctive instrument. It was almost obligatory for a song such as this. Take care, Peter,

Great song and collab. What makes this project special is that you not only have 3 talented individuals contributing to the project, but all parties involved had a lot to do with the way the final project turned out. When you look at the credits you see all 3 of you had integral roles, but your creative efforts created a synergy in this song that is instantly recognizable. Hope to see more from you guys in the future - I really enjoyed this, gents - congrats on a success!

Synergy
Thanks for the very kind words, Sig. There is definitely a real synergy happening between us all on this project, I agree. It came together so well and all the individual elements melded together to enhance the song. The central file sharing method that we used probably contributed to that. Every day we could all see what was happening and how the project was incrementally progressing. It was great fun. We appreciate your time. Talk soon. Regards, Peter.
