Lyrics
Lovely Rita was a meter maid
She worked from 9 to 5
But she hasn’t had a lovelier day
Than the day that she retired

Eleanor Rigby died in the church
and we thought that no one came
but Mother Superior came by at night
and left flowers on her grave

Ladies of Liverpool live on
And their names will live forever in song
They showed the way
In the time of yesterday
And they’ll survive when the rest of us are gone

Penny Lane was not a girl
But a street near Nottingham
Polythene pam was really a girl
Though she looked just like a man

A pretty nurse sold poppies from a tray
and Dirty Maggie was taken away
Molly was a singer in a band

Clever idea for lyrics. I enjoyed your performance(s). One man band. The outro is very pretty. Nice work.

Very sweet
Nice harmonies. I can hear this on a Neil Innes or even a Nilsson album. Seriously. Your affection for the Beatles is patent and welcome.

This is a great tribute, and I learned a few things I didn't know about the 'ladies of Liverpool'. Your singing works really well. Thank you for sharing.

Memory Lane...
Clever idea. Almost like a little history lesson as it recalls real elements of a past time that were probably missed by the local media. ... I like the clear, unrushed performance, too. It keeps the lyrics out front where they should be....The instrumental bridge at 2:20 somehow became the coda, I guess. I was waiting for another couple of verses. Well, maybe they will come later. Such a great you have here and you've performed and recorded it so well.

This is amazing... have to admit we have both been away for a while and have not heard more of your music yet. It's a shame this has not been heard more.! A fav.

Nice song, good idea
but... Penny Lane is nowhere near Nottingham! It's actually in a suburb of Liverpool called Allerton. The bank IS on the corner, there WAS a barber shop and the fire station is around half a mile away. They are real. John Lennon actually lived in the area when he was very young, just a few yards from Penny Lane.

You could maybe change your lyric to: 'But a street in Allerton'. The rhyme is not as good, but geographically, it would be correct.

A minor gripe from someone who also lived around the corner from Penny Lane.

Ha Ha. I thought I could get away with that Nottingham line even though it was quite a stretch geographically. I actually went on Google maps to find something close to Penny Lane that would rhyme with the next line. Thanks for listening and commenting.

Utterly charming!
The lyrics hold a special place in my heart, and the arrangement is delightfully suggestive -- almost makes me want to cover it and make it even more "fab", if you follow me. And the image is perfect. Bravo!
