Description
My 10 year MJ anniversary arrived and I thought I'd like to post something new - unfortunately I have nothing new :( So, instead I thought I'd post a re-mastered (and 50% replayed and resung) version of one of my favourites from June 2008 when I was spending way too much time with the black dog. The lyrics are a little tangential, but I think the general feelings of when it was written get across still.

New vocal, guitar, bass and drum tracks, and an added B3 for a little added colour.

Probably sounds best on 'phones.

I'm really hoping to get inspired to write something new soon - it's driving me nuts!

Lyrics
Sea Of Dreams
© 2008 Neil Porter

Late at night
When the seeds of dreams are forming
Delta waves on restless seas
Far away
Hear the distant voices calling
Turn away and let them be

Sea of dreams
Rocky shores
Is there shelter up ahead?
Darkest scenes
Closing doors
Am I safe here in my bed?

Shine your light
Use it well in times of darkness
Brighten up these shadowed days
Second sight
See beyond tomorrow morning
World might mend it’s wicked ways

Sea of dreams
Rocky shores
Is there shelter up ahead?
Darkest scenes
Closing doors
Am I safe here in my bed?

Look away
It’s just your own internal weather
It’s just your hurricane inside
Fight or flee
Sometimes both things come together
Batten down and try to hide

Sea of dreams
Rocky shores
Is there shelter up ahead?
Darkest scenes
Closing doors
Am I safe here in my head?

Sea of Dreams
I love the arrangement, Neil. Very bright, everything has a place and adds to the overall effect. Engaging lyrics that open the imagination. I had a listen to the earlier version and I think this is better - vocal more even and the mix richer. I like both versions, though. I hope the muse visits soon!

Take me to the Australian shores! There's always a bit of desert and a bit of cave in your songs. Love the way you compress your music, so crisp and intimate. Listening to you is like hearing an old friend, knowing his vision is still alive and kicking. Thanks for sharing this.

Recurring Nightmare
Who writes the often serpentine and bizarre plots to these movies that play in our heads? A collaboration of our experiences, our egos and Ids? Our desires, fears and doubts? Or, perhaps, as Scrooge theorized, "an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato."

Whatever the answer, this is a clever reflection upon the dreamy question that haunts us all. There are musical elements within this performance that remind me of George Harrison and they are all done very well, Neil. I enjoyed hearing how you tweaked this tune. Nicely done. ;)

A "Resung" hero...
Neil, your voice sounds real good, smooth like velvet. I must have missed this one in 2008 (a tumultuous year) or have forgotten it. Any way, I can see why it's one of your favorites. It's one of mine now...

Tweaking
Ten years and going strong!

In the fashion design industry the rule of thumb is it takes at least a 20% change to justify calling something new. You have exceeded that measure.

Besides, tweaking the back catalog is a worthy ambition.

Been having a rest from MJ, Neil, so I am sorry I am late. Great to hear an older track. Liking the song a lot. The backer is really good, too. Fine Aus rock with a touch of country to roll it along. Really like the musicianship and balance of the instrumental mix but perhaps the lead vocal "saturates" the mix just a touch on occasions? Listened twice and still had the same thought. Congratulations on 10 year at MJ. What's that in dog years? :-) Talk soon, Peter.

What Tobin said!
He just put it so well, and I totally agree :-) Always nice to hear your songs. You are like the bass guitar in a band. You are the firm and solid anchor here at macjams. I'm always glad to see you've been visiting my songs:-) Thanks Neil!

Oh, and the song is a classic with a great chorus!
