Lyrics
I met her in the mountains, I met her in the snow
And I never did know why she had to go
Mary Jo, . . . Mary Jo

She came from North Dakota, the coldest of them all
She said she would start to cry right before the first snowfall

To a boy from the South, the night's seemed quite cold
But her kisses brought me warmth, I was willing to pay the toll
For Mary Jo . . . Mary Jo

When she left me in Yellowstone the sun was shinning bright
Her father had come to take her, I didn't feel right
For Mary Jo . . . Mary Jo

Well she wrote me letters, I mailed her right back
She had compassion, grace and style, the things I did lack
Mary Jo

I thought I would see her in the same place next year
But she had ambitions, that I wasn't one was quite clear
Mary Jo . . . Mary Jo

Mary sisters
Hey, Tom, I think I dated her sister for a while .. Mary Jane. From Fargo, right?

Your singing and playing are in fine form here. It's good to see you are still posting here at MacJams.

Well,
That's some kind of a magical place, and I think you captured that moment very well. Thank you for sharing.

A man and his guitar...
Tom, you know I love this simple and straight forward kind of ballad. No exception on your plaintive performance. Really nice finger playing on the guitar. And the lyrics you sing are sung as if they're true - from the heart. Amazing what one can do with just two chords and a bunch of inspiration... Kudos.

Thanks Jack! It was about 90% true I suppose. Worked in Yellowstone Park in the summer during my college years.

Dreamlike chords..Your lyrics matched the melancholia of the guitar.I sensed this being a period piece, meaning it feels to have taken place during the late 50's..One of the most intriguing folk songs I have heard online..To me, this was as good as Lightfoot and others of that genre.. My sincere compliments to you.

late 60's
This was actually in the summer of 1968 but I get where it seemed the 50's. I was from Louisiana which was in many ways still in the throes of the 50's. Yellowstone was very isolated, it's own little world. You couldn't get very good reception on radio because of the mountains. I will never forget driving back late at night from a dance and going over a high mountain pass where we could get reception and hearing Creedence Clearwater's version of Heard It Through The Grapevine. Man were we mesmerized by that song.

Gothic Folk
Sounds almost like something by Poe put to music. Dark and somber.

Enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.

Gothic Bronco
Just the standard bronco dirge. If it ain't dar and somber then it just doesn't have that bronco stamp of approval, LOL!

I love to play guitar. I have been writing songs for many years and have a large catalog by this time. Songwriting is easy. Writing great songs is hard! Born in Louisiana and live in Texas. I grew up on Chuck, Jerry Lee, Elvis, Ricky, Little Richard ... [see more]
