Description
EDITING TO ADD NOTE: MJ buggy; cut my 8-minute song in half — perhaps just as well for your listening patience! Moving on:

This is me on Strat Plus live last summer in an unrehearsed 10-year reunion with my old band Farmageddon. Not seeking hit status, just posting to say hi after too long an absence. (My personal favorite Strat parts are in the last third of the tune.)

Yes, this is a COVER but I think/hope it's public Domain. Wikipedia dates the lyrics to a 1934 publication. I'll gladly remove it if this is a problem.

Nice Job
Don't worry about the copyright bullshit. I have had two versions of this posted for years and nothing has ever been said by anyone. No one knows wrote the thing. Lost in time.

Good jam and playing here. Based on Greatful Dead?

Respect
I try never to violate copyrights on principle, and try to avoid covers, recorded OR live. But yeah, the Dead are the main influence here, though I make no effort to sound like Jerry. Listening to your versions...thx!

Vocals...
...are indeed low. I did what I could to boost, but there wasn't much I could do. Good to be back, if a little.)

know you rider
great song! there is some interesting history of the song onhttp://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=40592
there is a singer named Bob Coltman who claims to have "resurrected" the song from an Alan Lomax songbook leading to many covers in the 60's and 70's (including the Dead's), but he explicitly says he did not copyright his version and it is labeled "traditional".

there is also a lot of internet commentary on the meaning and sources of the term "rider". most of it seemingly raunchy.

I enjoyed the live sound, acoustic/electric blend and overall vibe.
I am a huge grateful dead fan (my next song is a tribute to them) so this song holds a special place in my heart!

A lot of history
You are right on in your comments. This came out of the early 60's folk movement and then became a rock song and later on a staple on the bluegrass circuit. I always took the lyric to mean a guy who was out on the road a little down on his luck but who still had a positive attitude.

Writing, playing, jamming, arranging, recording. Those are my priorities...recording's last, partly because I prefer a live drummer to collaborate with (preferably in real time) vs. drum loops or midi (which I won't use). I'm still a teenager, creat... [see more]
