Description
My last few posts have been wordy. The intent here was to strip down the lyrics and try to say more with less : )

For some time Jack Miller and I had been hinting to each other about a collaboration. Inspired by that sail boat Jack uses for an icon I wrote this and sent it to him for consideration .. and he responded by putting wind in the sails with his harp.

The category I wanted to put this in was "Nautical." Surf was as close as I could get : )

Lyrics
SEA SALT

I wanted to feel free
so I took to the sea
out here nothing seems to matter
out here my negative thoughts just scatter

the third day out I hit some chop
the wind picked up the temperature dropped
waves came crashing across the bow
but with determination I held on somehow

I glide beneath the salty sky
the moon rises high like an eye
how long has it been
since you rode the wind?
how long has it been
since you found a new friend?

Feel the tease of the breeze
As the sun embraces my face
Out here I feel free
It’s just the sky the sea and me

the musical smell of...
... salt air. Warren, thanks for asking me to join in with you on this sea salt shanty. I really like your vocals and guitars - heck the whole thing. A lot of fun as your songs always are. Cheers...

I like when this kicks into high gear, has a bending kinda feel to it very strange the way it makes you feel like your on the deck of a ship in a storm very visual like when you come back and sing the last verse very cool!

You guys are cruising. Just when I thought the adventure was over, you come rolling back with more sailboat happiness: "Feel the tease of the breeze..." Nice. Happy to listen to this collaboration.

Not quite sure what riding the wind has to do with finding a friend. Is the sailor a loner? Can't he use his satellite iPhone to phone home or log onto MacJams and chat? Or does he have a crappy pSea computer onboard?

Midshipman
pSea .. that's funny : )

Hmmm .. what kind of thoughts would you have out there sailing alone?

I met Jack through you here at Macjams. I guess that makes you a midwife to this collaboration.

What Ego said!
That 'bending' quality is pretty cool, and the break at 2:53 is a winner. Enjoyed!

Old - timey
I accidentally had this on with an old Americana tune on Venerable Radio. It fit right in.

Like the mix of your two influences. The breaks and dynamics with your signature guitar slash horn along with the harmonica sound perfect together. Warren, how many vocal tracks do you usually do on a song? And it fades into the sun. Nice work.

Hey Tim ...
My general approach is to set up six vocal tracks .. with three panned in steps to the right and three to the left. This allows me to do two things .. first to make multiple takes as I try to figure out my tone and lyrical timing .. and second to develop harmonies. (Trying to learn harmony has been a recent musical exploration for me.) Ultimately, how many tracks get used just depends on how the song develops. It could be all six .. or just one. Sometimes I double-up (copy and paste) a track if it needs to be emphasized. If something more complex is needed I will add more vocals tracks.

Also, in an effort to add variety, subtlety and complexity, I often vary the effects on those vocal tracks so they aren't all the same. Each track could be different, or pairs of them could have the same echo or reverb. It all ends up being experimental while searching for the "right" sound to go with the soundtrack. And like any other experiment, sometimes the results work and sometimes they don't : )
