Description
Love those British Invasion power chords!

This song went from a friend's casual observation about feral dogs roaming in New Mexico to a completed production in the space of three days. I love it when that happens : )

Written in collaboration with Roy Buckley.

Lyrics
FERAL DOGS [BUCKLEY/SMITH]

YOU SAY YOU HEAR THE FERAL DOGS
TELLING YOU TO GO
YOU MAY NEVER GET TO SYRIA
BUT MIGHT JUST REACH GUANTANAMO

ASK A COP WHAT TIME IT IS
HE'LL SHOOT YOU IN THE HEAD
THEN HE'LL CUFF AND ARREST YOU
AND CHARGE YOU FOR BEING DEAD
IF FERAL DOGS RUN FREE
WHY CAN’T ME?

MOMMY NEEDS A DOCTOR
DADDY NEEDS A JOB
I NEED TO BE RESCUED FROM
AN EVANGELIZING MOB
IF FERAL DOGS RUN FREE
WHY NOT ME?

CORPORATIONS PRAY TO MAMMON
CONGRESS PRAYS TO TEA
I PRAY TO THOSE FERAL DOGS
AND THEY BOW WOW TO ME
IF FERAL DOGS RUN FREE
WHY NOT ME?

THERE’S LISTERIA IN MY ICE CREAM
SALMONELLA IN MY PUNCH
WHO’S AFRAID OF EBOLA
WHEN I’M GONNA BE DONE IN BY MY LUNCH?
IF FERAL DOGS RUN FREE
WHY NOT ME?

I CAN TAKE A SHOWER
I CAN BRUSH MY TEETH
I CAN FLUSH THE TEN FOOT TURD
CALIFORNIANS HAVE TO KEEP
IF FERAL DOGS RUN FREE
WHY NOT ME?

COMMIES IN OUR KITCHEN
SHOOTERS IN OUR SCHOOLS
TERRORISTS ON OUR AIRPLANES
WHAT’S A POOR BOY TO DO?
IF FERAL DOGS RUN FREE
WHY NOT ME?

BANKSTERS ON MY LEFT
POLITICIANS ON MY RIGHT
I WISH I WERE A FERAL DOG
THERE ARE PEOPLE HERE TO BITE
IF FERAL DOGS RUN FREE
WHY NOT ME?

Loved it!
3 days? It takes me that to tune the guitar (and even then it's never really there)

Great stuff Warren.

Thoroughly entertaining. Brilliant lyrics and your inimitable styling :-)

Complete with Dropout Boogie. Can't be bad.

Cheers

Dick

In tune
Some songs are like this .. they practically write and record themselves. Not the usual case, of course.

These days I rely completely on the tuner built into Garageband. The last time I replaced the strings on my guitar I purchased a more expensive set. I've noticed they stay in tune better than the cheaper ones.

Orientation
I don't know where these leads originate from. Either I just try to let them develop from the melody .. or else jump in with something and see where that might lead to as an organic process. Sometimes it works .. or doesn't. This one kind of flowed out of the existing soundtrack and I just went with it.

Drool
Co-written with Roy Buckley, the lyrics developed over two days of multiple e-mail exchanges. In the end we had to make cuts to limit the size of the dog bite : ) Some songs are like that, where the ideas and lines just flow like drooling saliva in a Pavlovian experiment.

Entertaining lyrics. Strong riff (a bit of the Kinks "You Really Got Me" in there?) and lively vocal. You're in good form here, Warren!

Let sleeping riffs lie
Those Kinks' 60s power chord rockers left an indelible mark on my musical psyche .. and I seem to be forever experimenting with tweaks and variations. In other words, that is certainly where the origin of this dogged riff lies : )

Entertaining ...
...and just a lot of fun. Would love to hear the mix brought up in volume a bit, but the musical elements are all clear in your recording. The concept of the song itself (lyrics) is terrific, and your delivery is right on the money — perfect for the subject matter.

Volume
When I play this live in concert I will bring the music up several decibels : )

Getting a perfect balance between singing and instruments has always been a mixing challenge. In general, for me, the pendulum seems to have swung from the music overpowering the words to the vocals becoming stronger. I think this is because I have been experimenting more and more with multi-layer vocals. Then again, it could simple be that hearing loss has altered perspective. What?

You Really Got Me With This One
Sounds like a collaboration of The Kinks and Stan Freberg.

Loads of FUN, Warren. ;)

Catching up .. and missing out
Yes, I noticed you've been on .. vacation. But given the general slow times at MacJams, it does't take long to catch up : )

Dave Davies was the role model here. Funny, a couple of years ago Dave's band played in a small club three blocks from my place here in Brooklyn. I didn't hear about the gig until the day after .. and it was like: Really - did that just happen?

Great lyrics, that improve the more I think of them! Love the guitar rhythms, the general upbeat feel of this disguises the frustration and subversion in the lyrics.
