Variations on a theme by George Winston

Description
My mother-in-law, Margaret, passed away a fortnight ago, and, although it was a sad occasion, family and friends were able to come together and celebrate the kind, supportive, unflappable person that she was and the positive impact she had on so many lives during her 88 years on earth.

I put together the photos and music for the service and over the photos ended up using a haunting, reflective solo piano piece called Thanksgiving by George Winston off his 1982 CD, "December". The CD is definitely worth checking out if you don't know it. It is still one of my go to CD's when I want to just drift away with music.

Anyway, I started fiddling on my guitar and kept returning to the opening theme from that song. It morphed into this...

See what you think.

PRS Angelus Standard - AKG condensor mic and proprietary PRS pickup.

Kind regards,

Peter.

P.S. I took the photo near Pommard, in Burgundy, France, recently.

Variations
Gentle melody and relaxed playing allow the sweet tone of the guitar to come through. Reflective. The small change of pace at 1:35 works well. Beautiful.

Long awaited release?
TFR, eh. Who plays Dorothy Lamour? :-) Thanks for the kind words. Every time I picked up the guitar this came out, so I had to record it. It will get better as it refines itself over the coming months. Now you two just have to wait for the release of "Road to Approval"... Thanks, Peter.

Thanksgiving
I used to play this piece on piano a lot when I was younger. It is refreshing to hear your guitar variation on it. Very lyrically played. Also, my condolences to your loss.

Kind words
Thanks, Jay. Yes, I can imagine playing the original work on piano would be a buzz. It couldn't help but develop the expressive and emotional side of anyone's playing. Thanks for the kind words. Take care, Peter.

Salt of the earth
Thanks, Harald. Margaret was one of those salt of the earth people who was for ever kind, generous and non judgemental. Unfortunately, like many, she was afflicted by Alzheimer's disease for the last few years of her life and it was sad to see how it diminished her ability to participate in life towards the end. We tried hard not to let her last few years define her mostly wonderful 88 years of living and giving. Take care, Peter.

Ah,
the richness. I think you encapsulated Margaret just from the expressiveness of the playing.

Genuine
Thanks, Sam. The progression cries out to be played with subtle timing and emotion. I am glad that came across. Margaret was a genuinely nice person who just got on with life and treated all people with respect. You can't ask for much more. I appreciate your kind words. Take care, Peter.

Waiting in line :-)
Thanks, Andrew. The original by George Winston is a wonderful, emotive, lyrical piece. If I have ended up waiting in line for tickets to the ballpark of its beauty, I am happy. Take care, Peter.

Understated
Thanks, Cees. Having played the original George Winston song so often when I was getting the photos sorted for the service, I kind of got stuck on the chord progression and every time I picked up the guitar, that was what came out, so I just went with the flow. Margaret was a kind, understated person who just went about the business of life without seeking the limelight. We appreciate your kind words. Regards, Peter.

beautiful piece this is Peter, lots of emotion in the way you play the notes.

Lends itself
Thanks for your very kind words, Bob. The chord progression lends itself to emotive playing and subtle pauses. And it suited the circumstances superbly. We appreciate your condolence thoughts. Take care, Peter.

Strange
Thanks, Jack. Funerals are strange events in their way. Sadness intermingled with celebration of a life. This was an after the event thing. Though another of my guitar instrumentals, "For A Life", did get played over the reflection. I appreciate your kind words. Take care, Peter.

Beautifully played Peter
An excellent choice of music, and your style suits it perfectly. Always sad to lose someone, but the joy is also there, as you say, in the celebration of a life.
Best wishes from up the coast.

More common...
Hi Neil. Thanks for the kind words. The original CD by George Winston is great music to sit and reflect over. Glad my noodling on one of the themes came across okay. 88 years is pretty good innings, and Marg was quality person. Pity she had to suffer Alzheimer's for the last few years of her life. Seems to be more and more common. Hope life on the south coast is treating you well. Where is the "neighbour from hell" thing at? Talk soon, Peter.

elegance and space
This is one of those elegant pieces that has meaning within its simplicity and inevitable progressions. Thank you for bringing it to life again. More and more friends and family are passing on. As they do, there are larger holes left in the fabric of life. This music, with its patience and space and beauty, is a perfect homage.

Apt descriptors
Kind words, Tobin. Thanks. Patience, space and beauty are apt descriptors of George's original work. My tinkering pales in comparison but I couldn't let it go. P.S. Just bought your CD from CD Baby, too. Looking forward to it. Buy 3 CD's and get shipping to Australia for $0.01. Can't complain. Take care, Peter.

A lot to celebrate
Thanks, Vic. There was a lot to celebrate in Margaret's 80+ good years. Pity Alzheimer's clouded the last few. And, yes, 88 is a good innings. A lot changed in that time. I appreciate you dropping by. Take care, Peter.

Gets in your head
Thanks, Dick. We appreciate your thoughts. The original is one of those progressions that gets in your head and I just kept returning to it on the guitar. I just hope I got anywhere near doing it justice. Take care, Peter.

Tenderly done
First Peter, I'm sorry to hear of your loss. My sincere condolences to your family.

I had a listen to the original first then came back to your track to see how it influenced you. This is gorgeous sir. It reminds me a bit of Will Ackerman in feel and expertise in the performance. Your tone is lovely and the whole effect transports me to another place entirely. I appreciate the download too!

Bull's roar
Thanks, Doug. Kind words all round. If I got within a bull's roar of either Winston or Ackerman with this performance then I am well pleased. I have already refined it with repeated playing and I think it is getting better. Great to play. Thanks, again. Take care, Peter.

you take it along far enough to be significant, it would be lovely to hear your new approach with its refinements. Even if you don't what you have already posted is more than a sufficient gift to all of us.

Seeing beyond
Thanks, Franc. Trying to reflect on Margaret's 88 year life required seeing beyond the last few years of her Alzheimer phase and celebrating the 80+ good years that she graced us with. We appreciate your kind words.
