Description
My interest in this song was rekindled recently by hearing Odetta's version of of it. It's a song I used to sing in various folk groups years ago. The version here is unlike Odetta's (which was in 4/4/ time) and is closer to the popular versions of the 60s.

My thanks to Peter Thorneycroft for his work on the song - it's better because of his additions and his advice!

I'll consider this recording a success if you are singing along with the gently irresistible chorus while listening to the song!

Philip Gardner: Guitars, vocal, bass, synth
Peter Thorneycroft: Harmonica, Piano Accordion

Lyrics
Words and Music by Huddie “Leadbelly” Ledbetter

Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight

Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene

I'll see you in my dreams

Last saturday night I got married

Me and my love settled down

Now me and my love are parted

I'm gonna take another stroll downtown

Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight

Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene

I'll see you in my dreams

Sometimes I live in the country

Sometimes I live in the town
Sometimes I have a great notion

To jump In the river and drown

Irene goodnight, Irene good night

Good night Irene, good night Irene

I'll see you in my dreams

Ramblin' stop your gamblin'

Stop stayin' out late at night

Go home to your wife and your family

Sit down by the fireside bright

Irene goodnight, Irene good night

Good night Irene, good night Irene

I'll see you in my dreams

Good night Irene, good night Irene

I'll see you in my dreams

Philip...
The folks at the Californian love this song. I never performed it, but others did. And yours it such a wonderful rendition. Love the vocal and vocal harmonies and the harp solo was icing on the cake!

Thanks
It is a beautiful melody, Jack, and that always gets people in. The bitter sweet sentimentality of the chorus is also a crowd pleaser. Thanks for your comments - much appreciated!

A classic song. Almost everybody seems to have covered it. This folk-infused version adds nicely to the pantheon, Philip. Pete's additions are subtle and welcome. Downloads finally working again! I will add it to the collection. Talk soon, Peter.

It's been popular for many, many years! I checked the download button and yes, it seems to be working (and as it wasn't yesterday I wonder if there is someone who is still doing some work on the site? Let's hope so! Perhaps new member songs will be approved soon?) Thanks for the comments - see you soon!

Great version Philip. I didn't sing along, but I did grab my guitar and play along. Hope that counts as it requires more effort. Charming.

Irene's Dream Appearance
Great work fellas. Thanks for posting.
Executives at Columbia records used this song, and many like it, to create a false narrative of American folk music and sold that to the American public. What is the American tradition? Can you hear Steven Foster here?
The revisionist Columbia Records spin machine, along with fellow travelers, portrayed this tune as a piece based on real events in Ledbetter's amazing life.

Interesting comments, Daug. My memory is that the song arrived in Australia as a bitter-sweet love song, and I can't remember who sang it then. It was added to the mix of Australian, English and American folk tunes that were popular here.

A Great Notion
I'm not sure what version I first heard, but it was early on in childhood days. Somewhere along the line as a teenager I heard it sung around campfires .. and I also heard Lead Belly's recording (which must've been a re-release, because his original recording goes back into the 1930s) and The Weavers' version (which went to No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 1950 (the year I was born) .. as well as numerous other versions. I just finished a good read on folk music, called "Dylan Goes Electric" by Elijah Wald, which is an extensive exploration of folk music history in the United States. Lead Belly gets lots of mentions.

Your version is crisp and warm .. like a campfire : )

This song has a special spot for me. When I was young my dad sang this song all the time so it has a special meaning. The playing and singing is lovely ... the harmonica is the right touch.Great job of a great song.

Nice production guys. Well sung and played. You have the easy sound of the last song of the evening before the chairs are upended on the tables and the mop comes out. A pleasant performance if there ever was one!
