Description
I posted a version of this song in August about how quickly, without much fanfare boys become "of the world". I wasn't happy with the song because it seemed forced to be something it wasn't musically. I was looking for an edge that wasn't in my vocabulary. It had a swing that didnt growl the way i was thinking of this transition. i also realized i might actually be talking as much about myself as I was my son. This new version excites me. It has my own edge as well as his..I would really like a critique of them both and let me know if you can hear what I am talking about...Thanks

It all started around fathers day when we all went to get our passport photos taken. My sons picture revealed an older, less innocent boy than I see on a day to day basis. Summer is here, he has become in more ways,”of the world” and I miss him already…and I welcome what he is and will become…The day to day. And this is where this song was born.

Lyrics
I bought you shorts and a second hand shirt
I straightened up your room while you were gone
Some changes I will never see
You will be forever young

I see you banging on that drum 10 feet in the air
and It rained all day
I watch the leaves
floating down the river

Went I close my eyes I see the snow is falling
I can see a change is going to come
I Watch the day turn away And Check the stove for leaks
The radio goes silent
I slip away

Oh Tomorrow I will wake , tomorrow ill do it again
Ah, here comes a boy, here comes a boy

here we go with our freedom
Here we go looking for common ground
And I will dreaming
Dreaming about the reasons

But No starry sky
no long good bye
will ever replace
The words and days
that pass between us

There will be heartbreak
And days we wish we could relive
and I will dreaming
about the reasons

I bought you shorts and a second hand shirt
I straightened up your room while you were gone
Hush little baby don't you cry
about the reasons, here comes a boy, between us, about the reasons

dearly departed
digging up the past

My parents are gone so I walk along
Far, far away from the days of Iowa
Far, far away from the days of Iowa
Trash day has come and gone
But somehow all my sticks and stones remain

Hush little baby don't you cry
I will be dreaming
about the reasons,
I will be dreaming
Digging up the past

I haven't heard the old version, but clearly hear how you could be excited by this one. You've got your own sound going on here and it's great. Lots of nuances, rhythms, originality and pleasing melodic-ness... don't want to gush but dang: Great Tune! DL will be appreciated.

thanks
for seconding my excitement. I really like what came of this work. Over the past year I have micing everything and staying away from going direct. It allows for so much more natural sonic room. Thanks again.

Second Hand Shirt comment #2
Gotta comment some more: I woke up early, had some coffee, chatted with the missus and came back to my man-cave to hear your piece again. Enchanting from the echo-y organ get-go. The build up's got me. And then at :50 the fine kick-in of guitars and harmonies...Now I hear The Cars! Still building!
I do notice a fuller and more alive sound from your miking rather than "going direct" approach. And new pic. I remember this phase with my son. Again GREAT tune.

I like your song very much, but one thing I don't like and that is the autotune.
This is a song straight from the heart and I don't mind vocals a bit off.
I like all the subtle things going on here, a slight psychedelic touch :-)
vocals could be a tad more upfront..
enjoyed!

I knew
I was taking a risk with the auto tune. My idea was to just use it as an effect and not really to correct my pitch. but that is what it does. Thanks for your thoughts. I appreciate them very much

On my second listen now. I love the little details that are subtle and not overdone which makes the listening a pleasure. The lyrics are wonderful and paints a memory of what it means to be a parent.

One tiny lil nit, is that the effect on the vocals are more prominent in the quiet parts which added some tension in listening for your words (the lyrics below helped), but on the chorus and build-ups blended nicely. That's all I have to add. Thank you for sharing this :)

Good chunky sound. Interesting lyrics. Varied arrangement. Skilful playing. Not sure about the vocal effect, but can understand why you'd use it. Much enjoyed!

Great post Tim!
Firstly, the words and musical writing are excellent.

At first I wasn't too sure about the way you took it with the pitch effect on your vocal and some of the more "modern" aspects of the backing, but after a second listen, I think they add to the overall feel.

There are some weird drumming things going on in the second half that I'm not crazy about, but on a third listen that will probably settle as well. One thing that was a little disconcerting was a non-beat-related click from about 1:42 to 2:00

The lyrical concept for this is a really good one, and you've managed to pull it off without becoming overly maudlin.

Stylistically I also heard The Cars, but also (and somewhat inexplicably) The Dream Academy's "Life In A Northern Town".

Excellent post despite my initial reservations.

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Plenty to be excited about, Tim. This new arrangement is stellar. So much interest. Wonderfully realised. Nice warm mix, too. I don't mind the autotune throughout the song but I am not quite as keen on it so "unmasked" during the first verse, though I did get more comfortable with it on the second listen... Just a wonderful song. You should be proud. Take care, Peter.

What passes between
I like how you continue to explore the complexities of the father and son relationship .. looking both backward and forward. One of the wonderful things about this song is the musical complexity underscores that dynamic: sometimes it's dramatic .. sometimes it's nuanced .. but it's always intertwining.

Is the autotune the right sound for this production? Well .. yes .. because it adds a special flavor to the mix. That doesn't mean a different version not using it wouldn't be equally affecting. I think this is one of those songs that would morph differently every time you sat down to try and capture its essence in a production. The important thing (which you have done here) is to try to penetrate to the core by pushing out the boundaries. It may be flawed, but that fearless effort is what makes it worth hearing.
