Get Going! [Langford/Smith]

Description
When Dick contacted me with a song idea and some lyrics I jumped at the chance to collaborate with him. It was one of those songs so wonderfully conceived that the lyrics practically wrote themselves. We sent chunks of material back and forth, which eventually got pared down to the verses sung here; although right up to the end we kept tweaking the lines. When Dick added his soaring lead to the break .. that signaled it was time to get going and finish off the production.

The category I wanted was "Motivational (contemporary). Inspirational is close enough : )

Dick added: "A few weeks ago Warren and I had a discussion on Facebook that involved creativity and walking. I often seem to think in rhyming couplets and a day or two later I woke up with the words - 'Get up, get dressed, get cursed, get blessed'. I took the dog out for a walk and loads more words appeared as if out of nowhere and I swear I heard Warren singing them. I sent them to Warren who said he had some music that might fit and added a few words of his own. What you hear is mostly Warren with a bit of lead guitar from me in the bridge. A absolute pleasure working with Mr Smith. Recommended!"

Lyrics
GET GOING [Landford/Smith]

get out get in get fat get thin
get up get down get straight get round
get sane get crazy get busy get lazy
get drunk get sober get under get over

get rich get poor get smooth get raw
get happy get sad get calm get mad
get nude get dressed get cursed get blessed
get dirty get clean get kind get mean
get fast get slow get yes get no
get day get night get heavy get light
get big get small get short get tall
get hot get cold get young get old

by nature an immobile object tends to stay at rest
and when it comes to procrastination I’m ranked among the best
I know I should really try to get something accomplished today
before today slip slides into yesterday

get mindless get aware get hip get square
get emotional get stoic get timid get heroic
get addicted get healed get open get sealed
get silly get serious get sane get delirious

get tongue-tied get fluent get schooled get truant
get cheered get booed get fooled get shrewd
get married get divorced get hired get outsourced
get flippant get gracious get shy get audacious
get militant get passive get tiny get massive
get hungry get full get pushed get pulled
get confident get scared get chosen get spared
get pumped get deflated get depressed get creative
whatever you do GET GOING!

I Think I...
... GET it. :P

I believe I've gotten most of these things during my lifetime. The most prominent get missing from this song is... *screwed*

I've gotten that one more than once. ;)

This had a bit of a carnival ride feel to it and I enjoyed the ride. Nice work, Warren and Dick. ;)

it was fun to work with Warren and this came together remarkably quickly for anything involving me.

I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

Thanks Warren!
You did an excellent job with the music and that was the sound I had in my head while I was walking the dog and the words were tumbling out.

Great fun to work on. Now what do we do with the rest of those lyrics?

Cheers

get shorty
A parallel to the Choose Life speech in Trainspotting.
Sometimes these kind of list songs can feel a bit laboured or get boring after a while but this carries itself along nicely and has a good feel to it.
Enjoyed

Getting it on
That was the challenge - how to achieve a sense of variety within the regularity of the verses. We attempted to get there by varying the verse structures, adding vocal inflections and dashes of harmony, letting the meter of the words go from simple to complex, adding more instrumentation as it went along, and, of course, taking a break. Your feedback is appreciated .. thanks for listening and commenting.

Trainspotting!
I never thought of that but yes it does have that feel.

Unconscious plagiarism.

Ah well, I'm not going to worry as it's a long while since I actually wrote anything. Strangely enough after the lyrics for this I started another song that just needs polishing before releasing into the wild.

Thanks for the listen and comments Brendan.

Yes, I was pushed!
Normally it takes me a couple of years...

Luckily Warren did most of the work and I owe him a pint or two some time :-)

Thanks Mr D.

Distinctive
Warren's voice is definitely one of a kind...and his style of writing/presentation is the same: always unique, always compelling, always with a sense of whimsy that bespeaks something much more profound than one finds on the surface of the music itself. Dick's lyrics are a perfect compliment to that style, always presenting an honest social commentary that gets to the heart of the subject without romanticizing it or giving it an overly-sugary veneer. You guys are the perfect duo for this kind of song-commentary. Such a delight to hear your work together. The circus-themed presentation really lends itself to these lyrics, too. Nice one.

Circus act
It's surprising how quickly and smoothly this came together .. but some songs are like that. (Other ones kick, scream and resist all the way.) So maybe we got lucky with this one? Thanks for the nice compliments, Paul.

As usual Paul
you manage to pull out some thoughtful and considered comments.

Warren's take on it was exactly how I heard it walking the dog! They were half his lyrics as well. In fact, in the end I'm just riding on his back!

Thanks for the comments Paul.

I can only speak for myself, but I think we both rather enjoyed the way this song took off from a simple idea. I'm happy to hear the "fun" is there in hearing it.

Why didi it take so long for this collab to happen? :) Seems like an obvious pairing to me - Warren, the purveyor of fine wordy wares and Dick, who knows a good set of words when he sees one.
Thanks for this gentlemen - very enjoyable indeed.

Get
commenting. Fun energetic unique toe-tapping and light. This really says a lot in very little space. I understand when you both say how quickly it came together and how you could almost hear the finished product at the concept stage. Sometimes the magic just happens. It does here. Love the pick up in energy with the last stanza too BTW. Thanks guys.

Added touches
Thanks Doug. It's funny, but that energy pick-up in the last verse just happened by accident. I felt something was needed to accelerate towards the ending, but I wasn't sure what. As I was playing around with adding vocal accents I came in on the wrong beat .. but my ear said what was that?! So I tried it again .. and it seemed to be the added touch the song needed .. so I just went with it. Pure serendipity : )
