Uncharted Waters (reprise)

Description
I wrote this song in early 2013 and was never happy with how I recorded it.

So much so, that it never made the cut in any of the yearly CD’s that I produce for family and friends.

But, I have been singing it... and I like singing it. So I decided to bite the bullet and try again.

PRS Angelus acoustic and the usual setup. Here is the result.

The accompaniment is Logic’s “Tin Whistle”.

It IS going on this year’s CD ☺ (which I am feverishly trying to finish...)

See what you think.

Kind regards,

Peter.

Lyrics
Uncharted Waters - Peter Bowen (January 2013)

Intro: Verse 2 chords

[C] Dawn steals silence [Dm] from the night
[Em] Stillness greets the [F] day
[C] Fishing boats glint [G] in the light
[F] Seabirds wheel at [G] play

[C] Sunlight floods across [Dm] the bay
My [Em] yacht sails on the [F] tide
A [C] salty tang drifts [G] off the spray
But [F] no one's by my [C] side

Chorus
[Em] My heart, a lonely [F] island
[Em] Adrift out on the [F] sea
I [Em] ply uncharted [F] waters
[Dm] Who will be my [G] breeze?

My [C] sail lies limp [Dm] upon the mast
The [Em] sun burns over[F]head
[C] With not another [G] soul in sight
It [F] seems my luck has [C] fled

Bridge
[Am] An albatross [G] appears on high
In [F] graceful, endless [E7] flight
[Am] Am I destined [G] to repeat
[F] Its solictary [G] plight?

Verse 2 chords

Repeat Chorus

[C] But I still hope to [Dm] find someone
[Em] Who'll map this island [F] heart
We'll [C] anchor by the [G] lee shore
And [F] make a brand new [C] start

Outro: Chorus chords (end on G)

Happy, but...
Thanks, Daug. I am far happier with the vocal and guitar work in this version. Still probably need to chase down a proper arrangement, though... I appreciate your support. Take care.

As a sailor
I love the images you paint here Peter. But more than that there is the poignant vocal which has just the right amount pain coming through. Beautifully sung, and of course your guitar playing is clear and certain with a lovely tone.

I have one nit and that the Tin Whistle is the right choice and plays the right counter-melody and yet it lacks the flourishes of a human player who can shade notes and generally match the top drawer quality of the rest of the track. Do you know any whistle players who could help you out? It's such a lovely track and I want the best for your new CD.

Tin Whistles 'R Us :-)
Thanks for the kind words, Doug. I agree re the midi tin whistle. Your comments reminded me that I use to have a cheap tin whistle a long time ago (which I have lost). I might go out and buy one and give a real track a go. As Franc, says below, though, it is still probably a song in search of a proper arrangement... Take care!

Ah Yes the sea is calling!
Another great song Peter, I appreciate the immediacy of the production but still suspect you might be underselling your song. I can hear some lovely gentle counter melodies there

Is George Martin still alive? :-)
Thanks for the kind words and your thoughts, Franc. I agree with you, 100%. My strength (?), as I see it, is as a solo singer/songwriter. I need to find an arranger/music producer to put some flesh on my songs! :-) Sig did it with "Devil Wind" and Phil/Neil did it with "Fools and Angels" and it made such a difference. As I commented on your most recent post, you have a rare gift and the skill to be able to develop and produce sensitive, supportive arrangements for your own songs. Much kudos. Take care.

Bonus :-)
Thanks, Michael. It took me a while to really capture the tone of my USA-made PRS Angelus acoustic but I am getting closer. It is a fantastic guitar. Glad you like the chords being added as well. I write songs that I like to sing and if anyone else feels they are worthy of playing along with then that is a real bonus. Take care.

Appreciative
Thanks, Dean. Really appreciate your support. Any songs in the offing? Or are they waiting for the dreaded first song approval process. It will happen. Eventually... Take care.

So caught up ...
...... in your next one that I missed this!
Lovely song and performance.
Not a big fan of the tin whistle here like Doug and Franc, and would definitely seek out a human tinwhistler for the CD version. Of course, I hear a rhythm section in here, but that's not to say that it's a good idea ;)
Cheers,
Neil

Arrangement
Thanks, Neil. It is a good song to sing. Agree re the tine whistle. I am going to buy one and have a go at a real track. Also adding a slightly more expansive arrangement, as we speak. As always, thanks for your thoughts and support. Talk soon.

Glad
Thanks, KC. This is how it comes across when I sing it solo (without the midi tin whistle :-)), so I am glad you thought it is working okay. I am playing round with an arrangement, as well :-) Take care.

The real thing
Thanks, Philip. I have a new tin whistle on order and am hoping to replace the midi accompaniment with the real thing. I tried an arrangement with this song and ended up going back to the solo version, which I preferred. Talk soon.
