Paradox Blues

Description
Alright. Something a bit different.

Some “down under” blues.

I wrote this song earlier in the year but have only just got around to recording it.

Australia is often referred to as the “lucky country” but we have political leaders who think climate change is something to joke about and have a “boat people” refugee policy that is a national disgrace.

IMHO ☺

All loops and me singing.

Went back to Garageband 6 and used Magic Garageband to get to basic loops. Changed the timing, the key and did a lot of cutting and pasting in Logic Pro. Mastered in Ozone 7.

See what you think.

Kind regards,

Peter

Lyrics
Paradox Blues - Peter Bowen (February 2015) CAPO III

Verse One
[E7] Woke up this morning, woman by my side
Expensive house, expensive car outside for me to ride
[A7] Put on my Armani but I could not find no [E7] shoes
See there’s [B7] a new pair up in Canberra. Could [A7] be them paradox [E7] blues...

Verse Two
My paper’s running late, the toast is burnt again
And I can’t get this damn snap lid off my heartburn medicine
Can’t find my keys for looking and my car has blown a fuse
It’s the hottest year on record. Here come those paradox blues...

Bridge
If I’m [A7] missing the big picture, I got a Drysdale* on my [E7] wall
And I [A7] know if the Dow don’t finally right itself, we’re all headed for a [B7] fall

Verse Three
My Chardonnay’s too chilled. The lobster’s tough again.
And my after dinner brandy’s not Chatelle Napoleon.
Outside the sky is falling. It’s gushing down the avenues.
There’s drought out in the Mallee+. Looks like them paradox blues…

Lead over Verse 4

Bridge
If I’m [A7] missing the big picture, I got a Dobell* on my [E7] wall
And I [A7] know if the Dow don’t finally right itself, we’re all headed for a [B7] fall

Verse 4
Folks say that I’m lucky, but things have gone to bust.
The ATO# found out about my Caymen Island trust.
Old friends are hard to come by. They’re huddled round their BBQs.
There’s [B7] riots up on Manus^. Must [A7] be them paradox [E7] blues…
Those [B7] children in detention. Must [A7] have them paradox [E7] blues…
And down here [B7] in the lucky country, [A7] seems like that I was born to [E7] lose…

+ The Mallee is a large, flat, farming area in north-western Victoria
* Drysdale and Dobell are famous Australian painters
# ATO is the Australian Tax Office (think IRS)
^ Manus Island belongs to Papua & New Guinea and Australia pays them money to host a detention centre where Australia can "offshore process" boat people refugee claims. They are often there a long time and have no chance of ever settling in Australia because of current government policy. Reports of abuse and riots are common...

Quite right! Chardonnay too chilled is just a waste.

Clever way you've put all this together but it's come out very musical. Good funky style. The lyrics are entertaining and have something to say.

An impressive project!

Magic lead :-)
Thanks, Philip. I do like this "jump" style of blues. And that Magic Garageband lead guitarist knows his was around this style. I thought of doing the lead breaks myself but his licks were too enjoyable. Talk soon.

All-star... :-)
Thanks, KC. The loops came together pretty well to give me an all-star backing band. Glad you enjoyed it. Take care.

Paradox Blues
Had I not read the description I would have thought for sure you were singing about us here in the States. Only the blues provides a platform to make such a serious statement while not sounding preachy or pretentious. It kind of says have a drink and dance while everything else goes to shit. I really enjoyed this one!

Guilty...
Hi Andrew. Great to hear from you. Yeah, most "developed" countries get themselves in the same sort of mess. Glad you liked how this turned out. I must admit that I feel a bit guilty about this song because it was the blues song that I think I mentioned to you way back when that I thought we could do a collab with. I couldn't get motivated to record the basics to get started and now, with the pressure on to complete this year's CD for family and friends, I just had to put it together very quickly. Talk soon.

Yeah, you guys and Canada. But you've both have managed to ditch the wingnuts. May something better follow.

Really nice piece of blues.

Paradoxical music
Take me to the roadhouse ...

It's a good thing you posted the footnotes .. or I would have been baffled as to what you were singing about in certain places.

So .. if I understand you correctly .. all you are doing is singing along to a composition you built out of garageband loops? That seems rather paradoxical for such a fine musician as you are.

The one true paradox
Ah, Grasshopper! You have captured the essence of the one true paradox. Now, snatch this pebble out of my hand :-) Thanks for dropping by, Warren. Take care.
