On August 23rd 2006, the world lost the legendary Maynard Ferguson. As a young trumpet player, I grew up listening to Maynard's music, and I idolized him. When I was 16 years old, I attended what would be his last concert in Denver, and I had the rare privilege of meeting my childhood hero. I spent countless hours playing along with his recordings, and I studied with some the nation's greatest trumpeters in the efforts of being able to play like Maynard. This is the closest I've come so far. "Conquistador" was not critically reviewed as one of Maynard's finest works, but I was always drawn to it. I started working on my own rendition several years ago, and I finally finished it early this morning. So, this is my personal tribute to "The Boss"...here's to you Maynard!
