I Saw Three Ships

Description
On the East Coast of Canada, as in I'm sure many places, a kitchen party is the chance for friends and neighbours to meet and each bring their instruments to jam playing traditional tunes. In this arrangement I've imagined not just celtic instruments and some brass but also mixing bowls, glassware, tambourine and bells all joining into a merry rendition of this song.

There are two breaks I've used quoted from other artists: the descending and ascending eighth note scale is from Loreena McKennitt and the jig is from the Chieftain's Christmas album. So, in fact, nothing here other than the arrangement is original.

Someday I may record this with a live bodhran track, but for now since it's never been quiet at home when I've had studio time I went with a midi frame drum instead.

Merry Christmas and all the best for the holidays!

Doug

Thumbs up
I love this song and covered it myself a year or two ago. Great interpretation you've done. Excellent!

Happy to hear from you too
This is the first celtic piece I've done since we collaborated on He Moves Through the Fair. It's especially nice to have heard your thoughts on this one. All the best for the holidays Charlene!

Lively
Cheers Phillip! This one was left over from last year. I got about 3/4 of the way through it and ran out of time for the Christmas season. Nice to have it finished finally (if anything I write is ever truly free of later tinkering :) ).

I'm more of your Bah, Humbug type of guy, especially in relation to Xmas carols but this fine arrangement put a smile on my face, Doug. Jaunty, quirky and just plain fun. Thanks.

Jaunty
That's the first time that my music has been called jaunty. I like that! I don't think I could do a regular carol Peter. At least not played straight! All the best, and humbugs all 'round.

Christmas feeling
Thanks so much Kent. I don't know if Irish influenced music is universally Christmas-like, but if this helps at all getting you into the spirit then great!! God Jul!!

Joyous Ride
There's nothing like a gathering with good friends making music together. I tend to agree - when I've played live it is a joyous ride. If this piece has captured that for you then I'm glad indeed. All the best for Christmas Erin!

Hardly serious music in this one but thought to be just good fun (who doesn't like beating mixing bowls with mallets to make music)? Thanks for having a listen and taking the time to share your impressions.

Be well and best of the season!

If I had to listen to just one Christmas song .....
....this would be it. I especially like the jig approach. It reminds me of two young ladies from Toronto who did some local shows - known as "Mad Violet" at the time (later becoming "Madison Violet"), they had an infectious love of celtic styled music from the east coast of Canada.
I like this a lot - especially the way the various instruments sound more real than midi.
Best wishes for 2016 Doug.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

East Coast Influence
Your comments are very touching Neil. I am very happy that you (considering your fine ear for production) find that this one works - especially with MIDI instruments.

The Scottish, Irish and Breton - including other French - influences are all mixed throughout the Maritimes (Canada's Atlantic Provinces) and the traditions run deep and memories are long. I have at least these three Celtic strains in my family so this kind of music comes easily to me.

Enjoy your Christmas and all the best for the new year!!

Thanks Doug
For this Christmas treat :-) Gave me some great smiles and exercise to my legs and feet ;-) Very well done rendering this kitchen party come alive.

Happy Christmas to you and yours, and as Tiny Tim used to say, God bless us everyone. (Saw A Christmas Carol at a theatre the other night :-)

OY....RISH
You've really captured the Irish jig feeling here and have dome some very nice things with the variations, esp. in using new instruments, changing key...All of it kind of a magic trick with on four bars of actual music to deal with. How fun, and with a happy smile at the very end, too. I'd say you have mastered the form on this one, Doug. Nice. (Sorry I am so late getting to it, but I am glad I heard this tonight.)

A wee bit Celtic to be sure
Hello Paul, and thanks as always for giving my work a listen. There is an artistic limit challenge with 4 bars of music so it pretty much comes down to variation in other forms. I'm glad my choices (including those borrowed ones) all worked for you.

Thank you sir!
