Description
I think this will be my last song about Franche-Comté - at least until we go back next time. This is a recurring theme for me.

I'm fascinated by the strong feelings I get of the extended history of the immediate area when I'm walking on the isolated trails of the forests of Franche-Comté in the east of France. Who built that house/chapel/bridge? What were they like? Who else has walked the trail I'm on? Why? Who built the 18th century house we are staying in? What are their stories?

The colours refer to the seasons of the forest on the banks of the Doubs river where we do a lot of walking. It would be great to spend a year and see the seasons some time (although winter might be a tad chilly!).

Musically, this is just me, doing what I like best - playing what I can and seeing what happens :) Thanks to Gavin the Drummer.

Cette chanson est dédiée à nos amis Brigitte, Marc, Karine, Bertrand, Joëlle, Jean-Francois, Apolline, Laurentin, Armelle et nos autres amis français. Merci encore pour tout!

Lyrics
Who Walked These Ancient Trails?
©2016 Neil Porter

I want to see the picture that you painted - valley red and gold
I want to turn the pages of the stories in the stones

I hear the voices of the people who have walked these paths before
I heard some stories and I want to hear a whole lot more

I’m going where the sun goes down
Go where the south wind blows
Big river calling me
Shake this shadow off my soul

During the countdown
In my mind I’m wondering
Who walked these ancient trails?
I’m missing your town
Something deep inside of me
Something there is calling me

INSTR

I’m going where the sun goes down
Go where the south wind blows
Big river calling me
Shake this shadow off my soul

Maybe I’ll see you again - through green and white and red and gold
We’ll share a drink or two - I’ll hear your tales unfold

We’ll walk together - and every step you’ll show me more
But until that time comes - I’ll dream just like before

I’m going where the sun goes down
Go where the south wind blows
Big river calling me
Shake this shadow off my soul

During the countdown
In my mind I’m wondering
Who walked these ancient trails?
I’m missing your town
Something deep inside of me
Something there is calling me

This song is good.
Your song is really very peaceful. I like it a lot how i like the landscape you´re singing about. I especially like the little (great) synth (?)melody. But the fade out surprised me .... "to spend a year and see the seasons" could be a good idea. ;) Olaf

Really like the sonic picture you have painted here, Neil. The vocal work is subtle and enveloping. The guitars complement each other so nicely. And your organ and bass (and Gavin) just tie it all together. Immersive lyrics, too. Very nice, indeed. Talk soon.

A different take on walking
It's an interesting notion Neil and you've carried it off really well.

Nicely laid back and well played.

I've been to the area several times now and always intend to go back one year and spend more time than just a few days there.

Cheers

Dick

Who Walked These Ancient Trails
Sounding super-pro Neil, just a plethora of great sounding tones flowing through this well-written gem. I like the concept, lyrically - thought provoking. Instrumentation is perfect across the board, bass sits nicely in the mix and the keys, sitting out front a bit really sound rich. Mix is pro - I'm wondering if this was mastered using Ozone 7 or 5? Whichever, it sounds pleasing to my ears through my DT 770's.

Thanks Chris
I did this with Ozone 5 after getting really frustrated with 7. I'll keep at it with 7 - surely they couldn't have released a new version that's not as good as a previous one!?

Ozone
I thought version 6 was definitely worse than 5. Version 7 seems to be an improvement, but will take me a while to get inside!

Thought-provoking lyrics and warm delivery of them. Good variety in the instrumentation (I love the tone of the B3 in there!) and crystal clear mix. Nice work, Neil!

like that bass
nice little hook on the verses Neil. Musically really easy on ear; a great soundtrack for a walkabout.

From the 18th century house...
Glad to listen to you again and what a great surprise to discover this song ! I love it, sounding very clear. Musically « just you » is musically « just excellent »...

Except the great quality of your track on every way, I’m very touched by this song and your dedication translating your feelings for our country…

I don’t know who walked these ancient trails but I’m sure that I interpret here the feeling of all your French friends, they will be always pleased to see you with Jan coming back here and they hope this will not be your last song about their country…

Amicalement
Bonjour à Jan
