Description
Seeds of Contentment was written by Davisamerica (Jack Hemby) and myself, Davisamerica2, (Terry Pearson). We wrote it about 45 years ago, and it was inspired by the coffee shop scene, and folk performers, such as Peter, Paul and Mary. There were some amazing vocals and harmonizing back then, and so I wanted to revisit that, and I knew there was plenty of talent here at Macjams to help me out.
This base track is an old one, but I decided to try and restore it mainly for the harmonica. It was recorded ten or fifteen years ago, and I didn’t think I could recapture the emotion and performance I had back then.

Naturally, I had to hit up Anne Cozean who is one of my favorite female singers, and who is a master harmonizer. I sent her a basic music and vocal track with a lower harmony, which I had hoped she would add to. Mine didn’t work out, and she sent me a hi and lo harmony track. After a struggle, I think I was able to replicate her lo harmony adequately. (Hers sounds so much better, but remember, Peter, Paul and Mary, not Peter, Mary and Mary.)

I threw in some bongos like any true blooded Bohemian, but they sounded pretty sick. My good friend, Scott Fugate came to my rescue, and has a beat and sound for every piece of music imaginable. He had a challenge, for this ancient base track had some timing issues. Scott smoothed it all out though.

I was suffering from writers block throughout this thing, and as you know, that affects performance too. If Walmart required a legible signature, I would have starved to death! Jack and Anne and Scott, I’m sure, were wondering if I would ever wrap this up. We started it up I think in December. It was finally “do or die,” and I didn’t feel like dying, so here tis, and I hope your enjoy this old Hemby/Pearson tune, and the wonderful contributions our friends made to bring it about. Peace. Terry

Lyrics
Seeds of Contentment

Tomorrow will come with long aching silence
The white horse still paws at the ground
I’ll wake in the morning, the sun, brightly shining
And I’ll follow that sun as it goes down

The flaring of minds still roars past the mountains
That surround all that we see
I’ll travel that road as it passes before me
Across that small room, it will float

The farmer and his child sow seeds of contentment
The raven still snatches them away
He cures the morning sun with dull illusion
And the roaring is heard far away

Tomorrow will come on that horse known as freedom
The children will look to the sky
When one will be one, and one’s all together
Into that great cloud we will fly

C/Em/F/C/C/Em/F/G/G/F/C/F/C/F/Fm/C

Smooth, Jack. The backing rolls along well, the harmonica has a beautiful tone. The harmonies work. All good!

Lovely work folks.

A wet, cold and rather empty afternoon has been brightened considerably.

Thanks

I'm glad you took a listen, Dick, and that it improved your day. These guys were so patient with me, I kept getting stuck. They turned it into a very nice tune, I think. I even had the opportunity to be a "Sister!" Anne gave me a harmony track to duplicate. That was a challenge, and a little scary. I had some pretty weak ideas for percussion for a coffee house setting, but Scott remedied that with little or no effort. He sounds great. We thank you for the kind words. Peace.

You ain't heard the last of me, Scott. Thanks for doing your thing here. I've always appreciated your drumming, and am discovering your many other talents. Yep, I know what you mean about Macjams. It was an exciting discovery for me, and there continues to be a lot of talented people here. I'm going to try and get by here more often. I can see I've been missing a lot! Peace, and thanks again. Throw in a 12 string Rickenbacker,
bass and drums and Clarence White, and it could be from Sweetheart of the Rodeo.
Very nicely done folks ;)
Cheers from Oz!

Thanks, Neil. I considered several directions for this, and settled for the raw, smoke-filled coffee house with the lights dimmed. But, yes, I thought about more guitars, but that's getting to be a struggle nowadays. Thanks from us all. T

It's been a while
since I've hear great straight ahead folk. This is a great song folks- the vibe is right on, the touching lyrics and the feeling you've elicited in me are a mixture of serenity mixed with hope and a little melancholy. Production chops are great. This is a song to go on a folk playlist on my phone (thanks for that) and thanks too for persevering in producing this. It made my morning all the richer!

A music style that doesn't fade with the years, Terry. Fine song that you and Jack conjured up. There is always a place for quality harmonies and Anne and you sound great on this. Scott displays his versatility and the harp sounds fresh and intimate. Glad this came back into the sunlight. Thanks.

Beautiful...
classic acoustic guitar sets this up... and what follows is classic, gorgeous vocals. Like butter. Everything flows, works (harp is the icing on the cake). Thanks DA2 for another hit song. Kudos to the Sisters and all in the band. When are you hitting the road? ;)

Sticking true to your style, you have managed to create a group of musicians to get your music across. Every one stays true to the composition and nothing is overdone. Lovely melody, something that sticks in your head. Kudos to all involved.

Blast from the Past
The harmonies are definitely groovy here. Well written song with the melody flowing smooth like that white horse as it goes on down the road. Harmonica really adds some nice background to the whole track. Very good boys and girls, keep it up.

Authentic
I love the arrangement. The tone of the guitar, tambourine, harmonica, organ; everything contributes to a specific sensibility. Great work on the harmonica by the way! The vocals and harmonies are top notch. I also really like your use of the F Fm C in the harmony. It's a solid hook while still being mellow and understated.

Thanks for keeping the fire of collabs burning!

If a song is sung in the forest when no one is around, does it make a sound? Music is to share! Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for the comments.

The Spirit of '68
Let's hear it for the Spirit of '68! (And I'm not just saying that because that's the year I graduated from high school.) That Fm pause really nails it to the age.

Pater, Paul and Mary was a construct. There's no reason why it couldn't just as well have been one male with two females to create those harmonies as you have done here. Go with what works.

It's interesting how some songs stick with us forever. Maybe that's because they don't have a definitive rendition .. that they are always in flux .. always sounding dear .. always sounding a little different .. with each iteration we make.

I suppose I might have tried to follow too closely the standard product of PP&M. Fritz Kreisler, the famous violinist tried to pass off some of his original compositions as long lost pieces from icons such as Beethoven, but finally had to relabel them as "in the style of..." I think we just want to experience what others have felt in creating their music. This was fun. We're glad you enjoyed it. T

Honesty....
That's what I take away from this gentle folk-style song. It rings as true today as it must have 45 years ago (but your recording toys are better now!). You guys make a really beautiful vocal sound together. The arrangement serves the lyrics without getting in the way. Super recording of a really beautiful song.
