Description
As is often the case, this song began with an acoustic guitar riff...

The first verse lyrics came pretty easily and I decided that “in these dark times” a feel good song was called for.

Once I had a basic song outline I trialed it in Apple’s new Music Memo and it did quite a good job of coming up with a drum track and bass line for the 6/8 timing.

I felt it was time to “get the band back together” so I sent the Music Memo demo to Philip (Philip18) and Neil (jiguma) and the “Great South Band” clicked in gear ☺.

I re-did the acoustic and lead vocal tracks and shared the Logic Project in Dropbox (a la our last collab) and Neil set to work laying down a bass track and re-doing the Logic Drummer track. Philip added several guitar tracks and I worked on the harmonies and added some claw hammer banjo with this crappy old homemade instrument I had lying in the corner.

Philip then asked his friend Peter Thorneycroft to add some harmonica to see how it sounded. Needless to say, it made the cut!

The process was "virtually" painless (sic).

Neil and I mixed and mastered (with Ozone 7), corresponding back and forth by email and this resulted.

PeterB: music and lyrics, vocal and harmonies, acoustic guitar, claw hammer banjo, mix/master
jiguma: Bass, Logic Drummer, mix/master
Philip18: slide acoustic guitar
Peter T: harmonica

Thanks, guys. Till next time!

Photo: I took the photo at sunset in Broome, Western Australia, and manipulated it a bit using Enlight (IOS app) on my iPad. I think it is quite a good app.

See what you make of it,

Regards,

Peter

Lyrics
Red Sky At Night - Peter Bowen (February 2016) Capo 4

D D/C D/B D/G
D D/C D/B D/C

Sitting here in the sunshine
Not much messing my mind
I’m reconciled with the past
And feeling just fine

Surfers dance on the ocean
Caution thrown to the wind
High time I jumped in
And joined them again

[A9] The future looks [G] pretty
[C] Red sky at [D] night
[A9] Escape from the [G] city
A sailor’s [D] delight

Boat rocking gently
Guitar playing along
Harmony needed
Join in the song

Music a healer
Strike up the band
Sweet chords are ringing
Throughout the land

[A9] The future looks [G] pretty
[C] Red sky at [D] night
[A9] Escape from the [G] city
A sailor’s [D] delight

Lead over verse

[A9] The future looks [G] pretty
[C] Red sky at [D] night
[A9] Escape from the [G] city
A sailor’s [D] delight

Here comes the night
Eyes shining bright
Venus alight
Passion in flight
Red sky at night
Red sky at night
Red sky at night
Red sky at night

very nice intro - nice bass. drums a bit loud and trebly.
this is very good. the lyrics are simple but not bland. the vocal progression works smoothly through the transitions. nice harmonies and love that simple harmonica.
the last line of the chorus works really well.
noticed no departure to anywhere i.e. like a middle eight....but it don't need it.
great tune....really pro sound, very country.....i can hear it underscoring a travel section in a mid-west movie.
excellent work. one of your best.

Kind words
Thanks for dropping by, Julian. GSB appreciates your kind words. Yeah, I wondered about a middle eight but thought it worked well enough for the "rolling" style of song that it is and just went with it. I will re-visit the drums but I like the punch they have. I might try to get them a touch further back, depth wise, in the mix. Take care.

Love the song!
And the story of its composition and recording. I love to hear the story of how a song comes together. Tell me more about Ozone 7 and why you chose to mix and master with it and not Logic Pro X.

Ozone
Thanks for the supportive comments, Maurice. Philip, Neil and I have worked up a number of songs together over the years and it was great to have Peter T along this time, as well. I have used various iterations of Ozone for a number years now and find it intuitively better than Logic's mastering suite. It can also produce a punchier (and louder, if that is what you are after) outcome than Logic to my way of thinking. It also forces me to get the mix right because I then export a .wav or .aiff and master it stand alone in Ozone. I know some think that Ozone is too aggressive but, as in all things, it depends how you use it. We appreciate you stopping by. Take care.

Wow... classic -
even though a new tune. This echoes so many fine tunes from days past. And your vocal and lyrics are so satisfying. That harp!... my, my, my... so sweet. Kudos to you, the band, and the roadies...

Good people
The dudes from down under appreciate your kind words, Jack. Yep, Peter T did the song proud with his harp additions. Philip sprinkled some nice spice with his acoustic slide work and Neil lay down a wicked rhythm section for the song to sit on. Good people and good fun. A recipe for success, as you know too well. Thanks.

Nice, Peter! This has a real southern rock feel (and when I say southern I'm not kidding!). Neil and Philip contributed stellar performances, and the harmonica soloing was excellent. The chord progression for this tune is easy to like and groove to - and I really like your vocal harmony work, Peter. Excellent collaborative effort - you've set the bar pretty high with this one! Enjoyed!

I might have to say
That this has to be one of my favorites by you. I bet you guys are tickled to death with the outcome. I have downloaded Music Memo but haven't used it yet and should maybe use that app rather than Voice Memos. What a delightful tune, thanks for sharing.

Music Memo
Thanks, John. Yeah, I was pretty happy with how the song came together. Music memo is worth a go. It's free for a start but it actually has a bit more functionality under the hood than first meets the eye. Great for getting some flesh on a song idea. GSB appreciates your support. Take care.

Same room
That would be an interesting exercise for sure Philip. The Shed is very welcoming - Mondays and Thursdays from 1 to 4ish. I wouldn't advise just dropping in though - let me know what you're planning if you decide to come up ofr a visit and I'll make sure there's a quorum.
This is my favourite of your songs Peter - I love a rolling 6/8, and all the parts combined to make a very enjoyable whole. Thanks for the invite!
Cheers,
Neil

Thanks, Neil. I thought the rolling simplicity of the song might appeal to you. It came together well. And, yes, the Shed beacons! Definitely this year. I will have to have a song for us to record. Take care.

Great song
Really liked this one. Nice song stucture, lyrics and interesting chord changes. Singing was right there and all the instruments were strong and true without being overbearing. Can't get much better than this.

Really really well done - I love the chemistry of you guys together. Musically, this has a real Tom Petty meets the Band feel with each of the contributors shining in context. Lyrically, vocally I think this is one of your best, Peter. The mix is outstanding - I don't use Logic yet, but when I return to making music it is mandatory. Neil, one of my favorite bassists, did an excellent job on the drums as well. Really natural. Philip always crafty in his delivery does well here. Finally, the harmonica was on point! really enjoyed this one.

Internet collaboration
It's really pretty amazing at how adept Macjammers have become at collaborating across the Internet. We practically take this for granted now, that a number of musicians can make contributions from separate (home) recording studios and it can be seamlessly integrated into a final composition. Pretty dang cool when you hear a production as superb as this.

I think it would benefit from an addition of the aforementioned middle eight.

Everybody is in fine form here. That harp is a wonderful accent. Your harmonic singing is simply marvelous.

Others' skills
Thanks, Warren. Bit late replying. Been away fishing for a week. Yep, I agree, collaborating over the internet is a great thing. Very few people have the all-round talent to put a complete project together with no weak links, so it is great to be able to access other people's skills. Glad you liked what we put together. To middle eight or not to middle eight...? :-) Take care.
