Description
I had a conversation the other day with a friend who was asking what inspires me to compose — a scene, a story, a memory, a feeling, something emotional...? Got me thinking about music that is "inspired" by absolutely nothing at all. Ergo, this little piano number (171 from "By The Numbers"). I wrote it quickly yesterday morning, just letting the ideas spill out as they may. There is absolutely no meaning behind this number, so if you find one/some, well, good for you! I just hope you will enjoy giving it a listen (runs just over 5 mins). You may even wish to try playing it. You can find the score here:
http//www.paulpage.org/...

There's also a really good article online about so-called absolute music. The various proponents of these ideas are mostly philosopher types, but the discussion is interesting if you're into that sort of thing. Here's that link:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absolute_music

(I'm sort of wondering if too much knowledge is a good or not-so-good thing.)

Excellent contribution, both musically and theoretically. How you can write, literally 'write' music like this 'quickly' is as always a little beyond me!

And for the sake of conversation, since you inspired the thought - if we take the pond's ripples, the stoic beauty of a visiting heron or the reflected sunlight dancing on its surface as the fleeting but definable inspiration - the water itself is still the source of all perceived beauty, a pond, even without anything else.

And what that is - experience, talent, consciousness or a combination of all of the above, thankfully, is very hard to describe or understand. Nor does it need to be. When it is touched by inspiration it reflects in different movement and colors. Yours are particularly nice I have to say:)

Lovely flow to the music. Plenty of light and shade. Reflective. A morning well spent! Thanks again for the download to add to my collection of your beautiful music.

Low-Hanging Musical Fruit?

Well, maybe for people with genuine musical talent, but it doesn't come quite so easily for most of us, Paul. When you think of it, the notes on a musical staff appear to be a bit like fruit on the vine. And when arranged properly, they can be just as sweet.

Where inspiration comes from? From anywhere, from everywhere, from nowhere. Who cares? As long as the sweetness keeps coming, as it does here. ;)

Fascinating thoughts about an endlessly fascinating subject. I’ve read about how some composers and conductors insist that there is nothing more than the abstract sounds yet… What is any experience really? It’s always filtered by our moods and fleeting thoughts. Everything is abstract until we give it meaning. Sometimes it’s very specific other times it’s simply a feeling.
All I know is that this work of yours gives me a good feeling.
Cheers,
Charlie

Beautiful.
Sometimes you dream it, sometimes you manufacture it, sometimes you steal it, and sometimes it shows up unbidden. Thank goodness there are still some mysteries.

no words
Very nice piece. I suppose if you think of music as its own language, then this is a full statement in that language, untranslatable into words, running according to the logic of tones. I wish I was that fluent.

I find your music to BE inspiring, even if nothing in particular acted as your inspiration in creating it. Or maybe what's inspiring is the way you approach your playing and composing. Playing with the lightest touch, your playing sounds so effortless, I actually almost think I could play like that, and that is inspiring to say the least. Of course, when I sit down to actually do that, it takes only a few seconds to realize what a gift you truly have. I think those of us who still occasionally haunt the halls of MJ are fortunate to be able to enjoy the music that you have to offer us - for that I thank you!

The
"critic" is a good entity to have around, but when let it fall into the background, you get creations purely from the soul with no "interruptions." Your critic played nice and let your soul have its way. Now just listen to the outcome...

Your ideas have "spilled out" via the keyboard in splendid elegance, Paul. Just lovely. A musical trip on gossamer wings. Thanks. Take care.

Too much humility...
Sir, why suggest that anything but that you have been creating music all your life? The skills you have worked so hard to develop through hours of tedious study and practice are manifest!
You are kind enough to share with us here at MJ. Allow me to speak for many, "Thank you, the gift of your music is welcome!"
Now of course I have to suggest you get something to say...lol :)

Let it flow
What came first - speech or music? For a long time scholars assumed music derives from speech; now some folks think the opposite may be true. Perhaps when you sit down at the piano and just let the music flow without trying to quantify it with words you are simply "speaking" in a more ancient human language?

Too much knowledge ...
hasn't slowed you down in the slightest! :) What a delicate celebration you've created Paul. Like children dancing in the morning sunlight this is precious and wonderful. Many thanks, as always, and thank you for bringing this forth.
