Description
Another Great South Band collaboration ☺

I wrote this song to support a stalwart of the MJ community who recently showed great courage to share the hard times he has been going through via a forum post.

As to be expected, many Mj’ers rallied round and offered their best wishes and positive vibes.

The metaphorical title of the song came to me whilst reflecting upon the attributes that can help us all stay resilient and strong.

The rest of the lyrics “flowed” quite readily... ☺

Of course, I found it prudent to call upon Philip and Neil to add structure and panache to my demo thoughts, and, as always, they came through with the goods.

Peter Bowen: Music & Lyrics, left guitar (PRS Angelus acoustic with chorus), lead vocals, Logic Drummer, lead guitar (G&L ASAT), mix & master (Ozone 7).
Philip Gardner: Right guitar (Fender MIM Stratocaster); right harmony vocals.
Neil Porter: Bass, B3, drum tweaks, left harmony vocals in outro, mix advice.

Hope you like it. All comments welcome.

Kind regards,

Peter.

Lyrics
Water Under The Bridge - Peter Bowen (March 2016) CAPO IV

[Am] [C] [D]
It’s lonely, living life on the edge
I’m stranded, teetering on the ledge

Water raging and the river is high
Can’t see help coming; people just walk on by

Then an old guy, shuffling down the aisle
Shook his weary head and stopped to rest awhile

He looked at me, standing up on the ledge
Then he smiled and offered his hand and this is what he said

[Fmaj7] [Em7]
{He said} Life is precious
Though it can drive you mad
Hang on to what you got
Keep the good, discard the bad
Like water under the bridge
Yeah, water under the bridge
Let your troubles run free
Like water under the bridge

I stared down to the valley below
Should I try again? Or pack it in and just let go?

My daughter's cries came from out of the crowd
She said, “I love you dad. Come on home and make us proud.”

(She said) Life is precious
Though it can drive you mad
Hang on to what you got
Keep the good, discard the bad
Like water under the bridge
Yeah, Water under the bridge
Let your troubles run free
Like water under the bridge

Lead over bridge
[F] [G] [Em] [F]
[F] [G] [Am] [Am]

Life is precious
Though it can drive you mad
Hang on to what you got
Keep the good, discard the bad
Like water under the bridge
Yeah, water under the bridge
Let your troubles run free
Like water under the bridge
Water under the bridge
Yeah, water under the bridge
Let your troubles run free
Like water under the bridge

Thanks Peter .........
........ for inviting me along for this one. This really was right up my alley - just the right level of light funk feel that I enjoy. Nice playing from the "2 Ps", and a terrific song to boot. I especially enjoyed your acoustic guitar track Peter, and the vocal sounds great.

Thanks for coming along for the ride again, Neil. It is a pleasure working with you. Great bass track and the B3 gave the song just the feel it needed. Until next time (hopefully soon, I have another song that might work for us...). Take care.

Surely...
Surely you are not insinuating that I have used electronic trickery to make my dulcet tones even more dulceter? :-) Logic's Flex Pitch is a very good tool to tidy up the wayward notes that didn't quite scale the heights of the required scale. There is also a touch of Chorus on the vocal that may have made it sound "autotunish". I'm glad you liked how the song turned out. It does have that a bit of that cool, Boz Scaggs type of vibe. Philip and Neil joined all the dots. Thanks.

A great blues song built around a most interesting lick
First of all, I like a blues song, especially one that’s got a message.   A good message, a good mix, and a really good [guitar] lick.   This song grabs and holds your attention right from the opening bars.

What a gift! You're a good man. You guys sound great - guitar and bass work is fine stuff (that flourish you use is a great ornament to your lick). Solos, soar like the life spirit you're celebrating. I especially like your lyrics - their metaphor is something we could all do well to heed. Mix sounds great too. I have nothing to offer but kudos guys (and my thanks for the dload).

Arrangement is tops!!!
...and the mix of all elements in this groovy song are about as perfect as they can be. I don't know how you bring all these elements together with other collaborators, but it feels like an "in house" mix to me. The bass is particularly fine in this recording, drums adding just the right touch in support of the whole number. Beautiful song, beautifully performed. Nice.

Keep Stroking
A sensible philosophical song about surviving the tides we encounter in the sea of life. Sometimes we can lazily float downstream and sometimes we have to paddle furiously against the current, just to survive.

Terrific job on the song, Peter and your vocal presentation is smooth and sure. Philip and Neil's musical contributions keep the song on a calm and steady course throughout this musical voyage.

Nice job on a very sweet-sounding track, guys. ;)

Water Under The Bridge
Hi Peter - Sorry I'm late for this one - thanks for the heads up! Great groove and an all star lineup makes this tune stand out. I must say I'm impressed at how good this tune sounds without the need for tons of bells and whistles - something I often have a hard time accomplishing. Nice solo by Philip, smooth and solid rhythm from Neil, and your songwriting is, as always, top notch. I enjoyed this guys - great collab!

Cool style, enjoy the way the song lyrics flow
and so much more. Like the James Taylor feel to this. Terrific bass that jells so well with the melodic singing. So much of this song is, so well done and so tasty! Tasty guitar licks that dangle and jangle in such appropriate areas of the composition. Like how you use the title of the song in the right areas. Cool lead guitar and so much more!
Way to go!
