Description
Fluke is a love story .. which goes bad .. and raises philosophical concerns.

The category I wanted for it would be "Existential."

Lyrics
FLUKE [Buckley and Smith]

On a whim she walked up to him
and asked him for a number
he said "Nine"
she said "Fine."
and through a glorious night they tumbled
with banns unread and prayers unsaid
they set aside that ancient curse
as they wondered was this fling a special thing
or just a fluke of the universe?

Unthinking life is hell
but thinking life is worse
like the tale of Ahab's whale
destiny arrives with a hearse
is it not perverse
to live but not immerse?
is this life a special thing
or am I a fluke – not a duke – but a fluke of the universe?

With every nascent kiss belied
and sanctimony set aside
they grabbed and held each other tight
through an apochryphalyptic night
unbidden nor decried
yet somehow it became too terse
no longer was it a special thing
just a fluke of the universe

Most satisfied desires
become particulates
in gyres of enamored fires
as intensity drives me in circles
curling Prufrock-like in yellow fog
must I just expire?
is this life I’m living a special thing
or am I just a fluke .. a fluke ..
a fluke of the universe?

fluke of the universe
never thought of it that way , you always have these very cool guitar progressions going up and down the neck followed by those rumbling drums always unique

A little tapping on my chamber door
Thanks for your thoughts. I think I've become more adept at expressing myself on the guitar, but I still feel I have a lot to learn about percussion. My method is simply to keep trying various combinations and variations while trying to recognize what works (or doesn't). It's amazing both how complex a percussion track can be .. and also how sometimes a simple tap here and there can make a big difference.

Love your...
choice of words and the rhyme-play. Makes the song a fun-song, which many of yours often are. The guitar shines, up and down through the waves of water and music... A whale of a tune.

Following along in the dance
I appreciate your thoughts, Jack. I don't think this song set out to be what it became - a philosophical meditation on one's place in the universe as extracted from a love affair. That's simply where the play of words, rhymes and thoughts led to. Roy and I just followed along in the dance during our collaboration. Sometimes you look back and say to yourself, "Did I really just say that? - or record that?"

Fluke
Lyrics to savour. Fun but cerebral for added pleasure. No fluke you two came up with this... Trademark quirkiness. Thanks.

I've been mulling....
...just thes sorts of things lately. I'm assuming it's a symptom of aging. But the universe certainly does seem to have a sense of humor about these things, doesn't it. I always feel like the butt of the joke. I'm not getting any answers, just the punch lines. : z

Looking up "Prufrock" right now.

Interesting...
...that your rhyme scheme seems to be in keeping with elliot's, upon first perusal.

The punch line
Standing in line for a cosmic punch. Or something like that. There's a line in there somewhere : )

The rhyme scheme kind of bounces around here, which (hopefully) keeps it from being too predictable.

Thanks for the double visit.

Fluke
Fun song - great lyrics. Calls to mind the age old question - Why are we here? what does it all mean? We'll probably never know in our lifetimes, but it's fun to wonder. Enjoyed this - thanks!

Your songs are .......
..... my new definition of "quirky" Warren :)
You always have such an interesting take on both words and music, and this is no exception. Sounds like Monster on the drums :) Because of your "different" approach, it seems that you open up way more lyrical options - I give you "apochryphalyptic" as an example, and who would have thought that so many words rhyme with "curse"?
A very enjoyable listen.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

How many takes does it take?
I generally approach a song as a literary exercise. Often there are specific challenges to be met, which usually makes it both fun and exigent. I like big words. Not to impress, but for the challenge of using them .. or in this specific case: trying to sing them. It took a multitude of takes to get "apochryphalyptic" phrased right : )

No Fluke
Another great listen. There are always hidden gems within your songs Warren. Little turns and twists that surprise the listener. Predictable? Never! Now about that issue of listing the genre as romantic....

Finding romance in the hidden messages
Have you tried playing it backwards for hidden messages? Who knows what you might find : )

I put it in romantic because (for better or worse) it's essentially a love song.

Nice song on the Flukebox
Warren your imagination was in overdrive on this one. A song about that which shall remain nameless - the fluke! Another low rent rendezvous doing the dance of shame in life without fame. Ah so poignant, so autobiographical!

Ooops
I didn't mean autobiographical which would be you. I was trying to say it was like my life. Time for another cup of coffee.

Autobiographical from A to B
No - I get what you were saying. I'd like to think it's hinting at both the personal and the universal - yours and mine : )
