Description
"Give It All Away" is one of my favourite songs of mine. It is a quirky exercise in 7/8 and introspection which I posted in 2011, and is yet again appropriate for me. So far, it is the only one of my songs which has been "temporarily off line" at MJ. Anyway, I have remixed it and re-sung it (mainly because the original vocal tracks had disappeared from my Logic files). It's a little crisper and sounds more like I had wanted when I first posted - ah, the joys of Ozone 5 and 7 :)
If you've heard it before, you may enjoy another listen, if not, then enjoy counting to 7 ........... a lot!
Me on everything. I added the chords so you can play along. :)

Lyrics
Giving It All Away
©2012 Neil Porter

Intro: |Am Em7|Am Em7|Am Em7|Am Em7|

Verse: |Am Em7|Am Em7|Am Em7|Am Em7|Dm Am|Dm Am|Am Em7|Am Em7|

Middle 8: |F|F|F|F|C|C|C|C|

I got time on my hands
My place in the sun
So much to do but it never gets done
I made some mistakes
And they play on my heart
So much to do but I don’t seem to start

I just have to have some clear direction
When there’s no reason I’m all at sea
Sometimes I get it right
Give in without a fight
Maybe I’ll give it all away

Doing my best with your obsessions
Sometimes they’re pushing me away
Sometimes I get it right
Give in without a fight
Maybe I’ll give it all away

Giving it all away
Giving it all away
Giving it all away
Giving it all away yeah

I lived a life of inhibition
Taking no chances – that’s not me
Sometimes I get it right
Give in without a fight
Maybe I’ll give it all away

So you can see the contradiction
Nose on your face as plain as day
Sometimes I get it right
Give in without a fight
Maybe I’ll give it all away

Maybe I’ll give it all away
Maybe I’ll give it all away

What an odd timing... The Police did that a lot. I think the the band I liked best for odd timing was Gentle Giant. Sometimes going back to an older song can be a blessing with the fact that we have hopefully progressed and you come back after not listening and you hear it with fresh ears.
This is a well planned out song that just rides on that 7/8.Those opening chords grab you from the start and I like the way you build. That bridge/chorus is wonderful ... airy ... with sweet ambient slide guitar sound. The bass really has to play the off beat. Very cool song. Excellent vocal track... I like the intimacy of the track. Great job!

Stan!
Thanks for the listen and comment. I saw Gentle Giant live in Germany in '76 - an amazing live act. 7/8 is a lot of fun to play, and I plan to do another sometime this year, but with a different feel altogether. This is definitely not a song I'd try with PBGB!

Love 7/8 time - it always makes me feel unsettled in a good way. Digging the phat, atmospheric tone of the bass - Sounds like a P to me...Well played of course, as well as the guitar and keys. Vocals sound nice in the mix. Great stuff, Neil.

Very smooth. I love different time signatures, they do your head in for the first couple of bars. Killer bass and drums too. Thanks for posting the chords. I'm going to have a crack at playing along with this one.

It's Over
Nice punchy feel to this with the drums, B3 and bass all working together. Characteristically intimate vocal tone. Good arrangement, with touches here and there for emphasis. Quality work, Neil!

Creative and impressive. Must have taken some effort to craft the bridge and chorus without slipping into straight time. Very cool song...much enjoyed.

Quality song, Neil. You worked everything nicely into the unusual time signature and gave the song an infectious groove. I like the arrangement a lot. Your vocals also suit this perfectly. Glad it came out for another tour. Take care.

Repeating what I said before

If you are giving it all away - save some for me : )

However, I seriously think giving it all away won't cure these life conundrums. Still, it's an interesting thing to ponder.

As for "get it right/give in without a fight," obviously that's coming from a man who has long been married.

You're right, the 7/8 beat does juice up the soundtrack. I doubt that it was necessary, as everything here is working together to deliver a solid composition. So I think what that means the 7/8 approach has made a good thing even better.

A repeated song and a repeated comment - nice symmetry :)
I failed to mention in the notes above that this wasn't about what it seems - so, not about married life at all ;)
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Getting it right
That is a tricky rhythm. Your really nice lyrics are nicely sung on the top and that lead just makes it hum like a well oiled machine. Good job Mr. Neil!
