The Light On The Hill

Description
My second attempt at posting this - the first one didn't seem to play!

The back ground to the song is that I got up early one morning and looked across our back yard to the house on the other side of the gully. The single light that I could see made me play the "I wonder what that person will be doing today?" game. That was the genesis of this song. Peter Thorneycroft added some piano accordion to complement the acoustic feel.

The tracks are:

1. Maton - steel strings
2. Gibson - nylon strings
3. Vocal
4. Synth "Lalaria Pad" - a Garageband/Logic sound
5. Piano Accordion (Peter Thorneycroft)
6. Fender bass
7. Fender Strat (during last verse)
8. Mandolin

I hope you enjoy listening!

Lyrics
The Light On The Hill

Up in the morning on a cold winter’s day
See a light from the house on the hill
Where are you going, what will you do?
Will today be when you change the world?

And the man who you kiss as you walk out the door
Does he love and bring you the sun?
And when you come home full of stories to tell
Do you share all the battles you’ve won?

Will you blend in with those who the city consumes
Will you be just a link in a chain?
Or change someone’s life in the blink of an eye
When you start up a new campaign.

Will you rescue a vagabond or capture a thief
Put out your hand to a child
Comfort a man who is cold on the street
Make peace with a girl who is wild

Instrumental

Now that it’s late on this cold winter’s night
I can’t see the light on the hill
It’s time to retire, take your dreams off to bed
‘Cause tomorrow you might change the world

Time to retire kiss the man by your side
Tomorrow you can change the world

This
has that "make you smile 'ditty'" appeal. MJ doesn't have a "ditty appeal" category? They should.

Beautiful Phillip ... great words!
Who plays the mandolin? Love it ... want more. What a satisfying warm mix.
Can't go wrong with accordion...

Glad you liked it Stan. I played the mandolin - just bought a cheap one recently and am enjoying learning what it brings to a song - a very distinctive tone and simple tuning that translates relatively easily from the guitar (for lead/noodling, at least, not so much for the chords I find). Yes, the accordion is also very distinctive. Thanks for stopping by!

Sweet touches
You've got a gully? Maybe the next song you write could be called "Hully Gully" : )

But for now we are looking beyond the gully. In meditation. And what we get is your quiet, firm optimism that, despite obstacles, always sees the glass as more than half full. Life is pregnant with possibilities. I probably would have written the kicker line as "'Cause tomorrow the world may change you."

Nicely played and sung .. with sweet touches in all the right places.

Glad you enjoyed it, Warren - thanks for those comments!

Re "Hully Gully", I did recently write a song called that, only to discover to my great amazement that someone else had written exactly the same song some years before I did! What are the chances of that? Anyway, it means I have to go back to the drawing board for the next song...

Lovely recording Peter
This sounds great - I love the panned acoustics, and your vocal is spot on, as are the words. Production is very nicely done indeed.
Top post!

The Light On The Hill
Harps back to a (mythical?) time when we felt that innocence and positive thoughts were enough to change the world. Lovely folk vibe and quality song writing, Philip. New mando sounding good. A fine addition to your quiver. Everything works together very nicely. A fine post. Take soon.

Another great addition to the folk canon
You've pulled a fine sounding backup 'band' together to help support your touching lyrics and melody. A fine song that is only made all the finer by the production values. Kudos and thanks for bringing this one to life! (and allowing for downloads!)

warm
holy moley - an accordian! so pleased to hear it.beautiful song - i'm english i'm afraid so i tend to make up poetry about america from films ive seen - i have all episodes of huckleberry finn and friends - and often watch them! but what i love hear is the finger picking style and you optimistic voice - i get a bit confused sometimes as to wether i am writing a happy song or a sad song - sometimes its both.this was definately a happy song.thank you

Glad to hear you liked the song - and the accordion! I'm from Australia and although I've read the book Huck Finn I wasn't aware of the tv series - I must get onto that!. Thanks for listening and for the comment - much appreciated.

but
don't let that put you off writing an ironic/sad song - its my moms fault - she always says 'write a happy song' - soz mom - but i like to write about death and real shit too

'heart-warming' kind of songs that leave you with a good feeling. Beautifully recorded Philip with that wonderful clarity. There's a Burl Yves quality about it especially in the vocal, regards M
