Who You Foolin'?

Description
Felt a need for some old-school RnB - in this case mixed with a bit of cool B3 Hammond.
The words could be about a relationship in trouble, politics, disappointment - or "all of the above". Started off with some riffing around the basic premise of "I'd miss you baby but you won't go away".
I'm playing everything here ("playing" is of course a loose term in these days of midi loops which can be so easily massaged to get what you want) except for the drums, played by my reliable friend Gavin the drummer.
Hope you enjoy it.

Lyrics
Who You Fooling?
©2016 Neil Porter

Cm C7sus4 Cm Csus4
Don’t misunderstand me
I’ve got promises to keep
You know you make me laugh sometimes
You know you make me weep

Please don’t reprimand me
I’ve got things I need to say
You know how much I’d miss you
If you ever went away

Fm C7sus4 Fm Csus4
Who you fooling?
Who you letting down this time?
Who said this game is over
It wasn’t me
Who you fooling?
Who you shoving down the line?
Who flushed you out of cover
It wasn’t me

Who you fooling?

Don’t know what you stand for
Seems like we’re in trouble deep
Don’t know where you’re coming from
I don’t know how you sleep

I’m hearing what you’re saying
It means nothing much to me
Not liking what you’re doing
You’re not who I want to be

Who you fooling?
Who you letting down this time?
Who said this game is over
It wasn’t me
Who you fooling?
Who you shoving down the line?
Who flushed you out of cover
It wasn’t me

Who you fooling?

SOLO

We’ve been down this road before
Still haven’t changed my mind
I’ve been doing all I can
You’ve been flying blind

Days of desperation
Nights of deep despair
I hope to see the last of you
You don’t seem to care

Who you fooling?
Who you letting down this time?
Who said this game is over
It wasn’t me
Who you fooling?
Who you shoving down the line?
Who flushed you out of cover
It wasn’t me

Who you fooling?

Who you fooling?

Get it on Get it out
Ha-ha .. I didn't realize you were such a cynic! Everybody gets cut to shreds in this pandemic polemic.

Of course, this is one of the magical things about writing and recording your own music: you get your yah-yahs out in a way that is positive .. even when the message is negative.

Cynical ......... moi?!
Thanks for commenting Warren.
The B3 Hammond sound (in general) is a thing of great beauty - whether you can play it or not.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Who?

The easy answer from Shakespeare: "What fools these mortals be."

The History of Mankind should be subtitled "Gullible's Travels." There are so many snakes in our little garden... watch your step.

A very nice, groovy piece, Neil. Sort of a *Marvin Gaye-Down-Under* feel to it. ;)

Memphis Vibe
This has the Stax and MGs vibe, one of the archetype grooves, and fine production which suited the content.
The thing made me wanna grab my blonde Tele, rare at MJs :)
Suggestion on craft? The second chorus might have been replaced by a middle eight? Might have been fun to hear yer Straw man speak his mind, after a little transition? This could have been continued into the last verse and your out chorus would have been more meaningful? Just a thought I had listening to the fade.

Thanks for listening and leaving a comment. Thanks also for the suggestion - I always appreciate getting ideas on how to improve what I do. To be honest, the song was pretty rushed, especially lyrically, and perhaps I could have worked the words a bit more. All a learning experience of course. I really enjoy this style of music, particularly the guitar/bass line running through to give it some life.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Not fooled
Ohhh that B3 sound! Perfect for the break and for stabs here and there. Another good one Neil. lt is election time in Oz - the usual suspects getting under your skin with all the campaigning? :)

Enjoyed this one Neil and it now has a home in my iTunes (with appreciation!)

Cheers from the GWN,
Doug

Who You Fooling'?
Sits nicely in a groove. The B3 is subtle and cool but powerful. Strong lyrics. Nice licks from the guitar. It's a good one, Neil!

Great band
Just like mine - two guys! Very slick sound, as I've come to expect. The instruments all sound superb, Neil.

Love the vocal...
Somewhat smokey, somewhat gravelly, always draws me in. I don't know enough about R & R, but this strikes me as such a solid, focused composition that is recorded and mixed with great care. I think you "play" everything just fine; the drummer is cool; the Hammond absolutely perfect in that long bridge. What a nice touch. Great son, Neil. You keep pouring on the hits. Nice.

Who You Foolin?
My kind of song, Neil - groove is serious, instrumentation is really well done. I have been absent from here for awhile (life happens!) - Glad I caught this! You are really dialing this in!

I like the vibe on this...
Kudos to Gavin on this one...I think his approach suits the song on this one...and the drums against the B3 are really nice...

This is another one with that electric Cockburn feel, just a bit...

I'd love a little fiery something in there for contrast, maybe some more stinging lead...and yes, you need cowbell... Someone has to tell you...

Cool vocal and cool mix...
