Lyrics
The Wander light words. Henry Lawson
Music. Franciscus Henri (Alberts Music)

For my ways are strange ways and new ways and old ways,
And deep ways and steep ways and high ways and low;
I'm at home and at ease on a track that I know not,
And restless and lost on a road that I know.
And they heard the tent-poles clatter,
And the fly in twain was torn –
'Tis the soiled rag of a tatter
Of the tent where I was born.
And what matters it, I wonder?
Brick or stone or calico? –
There was one born in a manger
Nineteen hundred years ago

And my beds were camp beds and tramp beds and damp beds,
And my beds were dry beds on drought-stricken ground,
Hard beds and soft beds, and wide beds and narrow –
For my beds were strange beds the wide world round.

And the old hag seemed to ponder
('T was my mother told me so),
And she said that I would wander
Where but few would think to go.
"He will fly the haunts of tailors,
He will cross the ocean wide,
For his fathers, they were sailors
All on his good father's side."

I rest not, 'tis best not, the world is a wide one
And, caged for an hour, I pace to and fro;
I see things and dree things and plan while I'm sleeping,
I wander for ever and dream as I go.

And the old hag she seemed troubled
As she bent above the bed,
"He will dream things and he'll see things
To come true when he is dead.
He will see things all too plainly,
And his fellows will deride,
For his mothers they were gipsies
All on his good mother's side."

And my dreams are strange dreams, are day dreams, are grey dreams,
And my dreams are wild dreams, and old dreams and new;
They haunt me and daunt me with fears of the morrow –
My brothers they doubt me – but my dreams come true.
For my ways ………………………..

Really nicely done Franc
You must have spent quite a lot of time on this with all the little synthy bits and scattered percussion/fx. It has certainly paid off.
H.L.'s words certainly lend themselves to your style.
I've been listening a lot to a local singer that I thought you might enjoy. Michael Menager is in his late 60s (like me) and is producing some very good music. You can listen here https://michaelmenager.bandcamp.com
This interpretation of The Wanderlight is excellent!
Cheers from Pambula Beach,
Neil

Always greatful for your comments
I did spend a bit of time on this one..making up for lost time watching more qualified engineers mix my CDs.
As for late sixties..the meter is ticking..Michael Menager is certainly a find ..Thank you so much.

On a run...
Franciscus on a run, the quality of the posts this year is outstanding. Great production on this one. Music from a lost and forgotten time, but somehow just right. A curious notion, out of time, but perfect for the time.

Thanks so much
I suspect you have expressed exactly what I'm aiming for...The poetry is from another time and I have not always been engaged with it.Others have put this material to music but it tends to default to "country ballad"
I'm trying to make it contemporary...damned if I know if I have.
Thanks for following the experiments.

The Wanderer
The setting enhances the feeling of mystery and foreboding fate in the poem. Not a poet I'm familiar with. The performance and accompaniment are unique and riveting. Thanks for the download.

THE WANDER LIGHT
Haunting (in a good way :-)), Franc. So atmospheric. I like the counterpoint between the Nick Cave style "rap" lines and the more traditional folk approach. You can tell significant care and effort has gone into this. Music of the highest quality. Lawson was ahead of his time with this. Thanks for sharing it with us. Take care.

Hi Peter...
I acknowledge Nick Cave..he's been trying to copy my style for years:)
Thanks for your comments ,they are sincerely appreciated. I'll see how far I can take Mr Lawson before I can think of some lyrics of my own...

I can see the video that should go with it as the moods unfold. A great concert vehicle should you ever put together “Franciscus Henri and Henry Lawson” show. Thoughtfully produced and entertaining!

Troubadour from Oz
The fact that this was not just done straight as a folk ballad is a brilliant artistic choice. Very powerful and well executed Franciscus. Moody and dark. Appreciate the download sir!
