Description
I wrote this song a fair while ago and didn't get round to recording a decent version until now.

It is an attempt at a "feelin' low down" acoustic country song a la Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell et al.

PRS Angelus acoustic and Ibanez AS193 semi-hollow body on lead.

See what you make of it.

Regards,

Peter

Lyrics
Man In The Mirror - Peter Bowen (October 2014)

[C] [G] [F] [C]

It's [C] late in the evening and I'm [G] staring at the mirror and this [F] guy is looking back at [C] me
He'd be [F] looking pretty sharp if you could [C] render out the red-eye and [G] airbrush in some dignity
He [F] still wears a frown from his [C] night on the town with its [Em] unfulfilled [F] fantasies [Fmaj7]
[C] Ain’t no need saying, that [G] man in the mirror is [C] me

In the [C] deepening twilight he [G] lowered his drawbridge and went [F] looking for love in the [C] night
From [F] night club to barroom he [C] laid down his patter to any [G] girl who didn’t take flight
Despite [F] splashing his hard earned on [C] whiskey and women, [Em] seems things didn’t turn out too [F] right [Fmaj7]
That [C] man in the mirror is [G] looking a little up[C]tight

You can [F] play fast and loose with your [C] image
But a [Em] mirror will tell you no [F] lies [Fmaj7]
In the [C] cold light of dawn, face [G] haggard and drawn,
It works [F] best if you just close your [C] eyes…

Lead over Verse

You can [F] play fast and loose with your [C] image
But a [Em] mirror will tell you no [F] lies [Fmaj7]
In the [C] cold light of dawn, face [G] haggard and drawn,
It works [F] best if you just close your [C] eyes…

Man In The Mirror
I like the song, the mood it generates. The arrangement is simple enough not to distract from the reflective tone, but complicated enough to build and maintain interest. Interesting what you've done with the vocal, especially the harmonies. Guitars are excellent. Impressive, my friend!

Harmonies in a can...
Thanks for you kind words, Philip. I like this song, too. Harder to sing than it might sound, it took me a while to get a lead vocal I was happy with. I played around with the Logic Ensemble plugin on a pitch shifted second track of my lead vocal to get the harmonies. I quite like how it turned out. Steve (my postie) and I are working on a "band" version of this with pedal steel, too. Talk soon.

Thanks
Thanks for the kudos re the lyrics, Mark. I must admit I am quite proud of them in this one. They just seemed to materialise one day whilst I was fiddling on the acoustic. I appreciate you dropping by. Take care.

This is the missing...
... hit song that should have been on a Willie Nelson album way back when. Only to say I hear shades of Willie, even though this isn't a country tune.
I really, really like this. Good one, Peter. Glad you posted it. So fine...

On the road again...
Thanks, Jack. Willie would be a fine choice to sing this one. It was singers of his ilk that I had in mind when I was putting it together. I really appreciate your very kind words. Take care.

Beautifully simple
the temptation would be to go for more but the way you've held back on this is fabulous. A great recording.

Appreciative
Thanks, Franc. I like this simple arrangement, too. Seems to heighten the sombre mood of the song. That said, I am working on a "band" version with my postie, Steve, that will get here eventually. Bass, pedal steel, etc.., it is looking good, too. I appreciate your kind support, as always. Take care.

Wonderful
First, a beautiful lyric and wonderful composition. Hands down, this is superior in every way.

Second, the way you've performed this gentle number is, in my way of thinking, arresting. Such simple elements beautifully played and.the vocals so precise, clear, and engaging. The addition of the "choir" was a stroke of revelation -- unexpected, but absolutely perfect. Through your first verse I was thinking "strings", but the choir was a more-personal choice. I love this song and how you've performed it. The less-is-more philosophy is working so much in your favor here. Just beautiful.

Kind words
Very kind words, Paul. Recording a slow-paced, more reflective song such as this was a bit of a challenge, and it took a while to get it where I thought it worked. So glad that you liked how it turned out. Thanks for your continuing, strong support of my musical endeavours. Take care.

great tonality on that acoustic... really like your vocals and the background adds at the 2nd verse. Sweet lead on that Ibby.

Fine guitars
Thanks, Andy. The PRS Angelus is a great guitar and it records well. Glad you liked how the whole project came together. The Ibby semi-hollow is my favourite electric, too. Such a versatile instrument. I appreciate you dropping by. Take care.

So glad you are still posting here Peter. I've always enjoyed your songs, and this one's no exception. It has a reserved quality about it that just fits my mood today. Really nice playing and singing.

Thanks, JG. The MJ community has diminished but I like the people who are keeping it alive and I wouldn't go anywhere else. Glad you liked this. Take care, man.

Guy Clark Look Alike
Coming from this environment, playing this music stuff for fifteen years, in bars, bar-be-que places and motor rallies, leaves a stain.
It don't wash off, don't fade away and the worst part, especially in the unguarded moment when ya can't help but recall the people from along the way, though they are long gone... far away, they are never wholly absent. A stain.
Good song, recall vibe.

Life's travails
Thanks, Daug. I wasn't an enthusiastic country fan in my earlier days but I have been drawn lately to more reflective, "road-worn" country songs that tell a story about life's travails. I can well imagine how music of this type can stir emotions and bring back memories. Glad you thought I didn't overstep the mark on this. Take care.

Turned out okay
Hi Maurice. Thanks for dropping by. I appreciate your kind words re the song. I am happy it turned out okay. There were surprisingly few images on the net that suited what I had in mind. I thought there would be plenty. Anyway, thanks again and take care.

Rusty Dusty Brothers
I used to play in RDB in the early 70s. Joe Cannon was the main singer, and this sounds so much like a song he would have written. Complex on a number of levels, but accessible and meaningful. What reminds me most about RDB is the high harmony, which Peter Garrety would have sung. I really like this one Peter.

RDB
Thanks, Neil. RDB sounds like a blast. I chased down Joe et al. Good song. Humour, cool riffage. Glad you liked this. I was pretty happy with the lyrics in the end. I am also mixing and mastering a "band" version that my postie friend, Steve, has been contributing to. Some nice pedal steel in the mix. Take care.

Great song
I can hear the autotuning, but I don't blame you as I do the same thing. Whatever it takes to get the job done. If you were so inclined, I think you could license this to a Big Name. (Not "Rumpelstiltskin", though that's pretty big.)

Traction?
Thanks, Graham. Does Rumpelstiltskin do country ballads? :-) Rump does the Ryman! Cool gig. Yeah, I think the song could go okay with the right Big Name. I will enter it in a couple of Australian songwriting competitions and see if it has any traction. And yes, you are right about the autotune, as well. It is actually quite a hard song to sing (I think sparse arrangement, slow ballads probably often are) and I needed to be nudged in the right directions a few times :-) Take care.

I don't know why the final lines stand out to me "In the cold light of dawn, face haggard and drawn, It works best if you just close your eyes…" I liked this song a lot.

Poignant
Beautiful. Three is real depth to the way you sing this one - very emotional. Your playing and the mix are great too, but the vocal sits in the centre of attention as it should. This could be a label release on the radio - very pro.

It's a keeper! Thanks for the download.
