Description
Here’s an oldie. I can’t remember when it was written, but my musical brother Jack Hemby, (affectionately known as the first and original davisamerica,) and myself composed the lyrics. I’m not sure about the music, I know I had something to do with it, it’s been so long! Anyway, this was recorded about 15 years ago by Abandon Style, a collection of songwriters here in Oklahoma City. That’s me on vocals and piano, Jason Morrison on guitars, Pat Glenn on bass guitar, and Charles Davis on drums. I had just won a songwriting contest with my “Table Five” and was awarded some studio time, so Road to Yourself was one of the songs we recorded at White Rose Studios in Guthrie, OK. We had a tight little band, and plenty of original songs. Good times! Hope you enjoy!

Lyrics

Road to Yourself

People think you’re lucky on the road to yourself
Your independence is shining. You don’t need nobody’s help
And you’re feeling kind of homesick, but you’re gonna be OK
Coz you’re gonna find yourself someday
And they tell you “That’s how you wanna be”
They’re gonna tell you “That’s how you wanna be”

Make a little money, then you gotta move along
You never sing the last verse to any song
You packed all your dreams into the back of a van
Looking for a place to make a stand
And they’ll tell you “That’s how you wanna be”
They’re gonna tell you “That’s how you wanna be”

Look into the mirror, study what you see
That prisoner of tradition is running wild and free
Draw back the curtains to the window of your soul
The whole world is waiting, and they all wanna know
And they’ll tell you “That’s how you wanna be”
They’re gonna tell you “That’s how you wanna be”

Nice band sound. Must have been a lot of fun having such a tight band and a studio to play in.

Road to Yourself
Certainly brings back memories of a style of music I grew up with. Good song. Nice tight sound. Liking your vocal work a lot, Terry. Classic guitar work, too. It all works seamlessly. Thanks.

Love the vibe here Terry.
Shades of smashmouth (only better). Great mix! Love the lyrics. Good production.
