 Genre: Acoustic

Get Flash to see this player.

I happened to meet Barry Carozzi, an old friend I hadn't seen for a while, and we got to talking about music. He said he'd like to record a few of his songs, so we started a bit of a project. Here's the first song that we worked on!

Barry Carozzi - ukulele (left side), vocals
Philip Gardner - ukulele (right side), guitar, bass, keys, recording

Ukulele Blues
Words and music by Barry Carozzi

Everybody says I’m crazy
They think I’m crackers and just maybe
That’s why I got the Ukulele Blues

People stare and point their fingers
It’s so sad how ridicule lingers
And now I got the Ukulele Blues

Maybe I’m just being deluded
Keep on feeling like I’m being excluded
I can’t find a club for my ukulele and me
Where we can be.

People stare and say “look at him
Who does he think he is, Tiny Tim?”
And now I got the Ukulele Blues

Maybe I’ll join a ukulele orchestra
Can you tell where I can register
Maybe that’s where I’ll find my destiny
I’ll wait and see

Well I don’t mind no, I don’t care
If everybody thinks that I’m a square
I reckon that I’ll be all right
And I can’t wait till Saturday night
I’ll stand on the corner
Sing the Ukulele Blues

The uke certainly has its own character! What would those people in Brighton know? Thanks for listening!

This is a bit of fun too, Philip
not really stretching your range but broadening it somewhat ;-) Some interesting rhymes. Like your bridge. Barry has a good voice.

Ukulele Blues
Feel good tune (for a blues song :-)). The ukulele certainly tends to bring out the playfulness in people. Tongue in cheek fun. Simple, effective arrangement. I like Barry's clear, down to earth vocal work, too. Thanks, guys.

Well now you mention it, I've never met an unhappy ukulele player (admittedly a small field - Barry is the only one I know). It's meant as a "put a smile on your face" song, I think, so it looks like it's working! See you soon.

In the interest of transparency, I have to say that I've never been a big uke fan - but PBGBer Dawson has introduced me to a different side of the instrument and I've developed some respect ;) Ukelele Blues has done nothing to lower that respect of course, with Barry's cool vocal and your use/guit/bass/keys contributionn maling for a great result.
Good one!

Uke fan
Yes, I can see the quality in something like Tommy Emmanuel & Jake Shimabukuro playing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", but I usually wonder if it would be better if the uke were replaced with a guitar 😄 However, it's a lively, fun sound and Barry does make a uke come to life. Thanks for listening, Neil - much appreciated!

Some songs are just made for a uke. This one the textbook example, so well sung and played. Nice work on the guitar break too Phillip. Too fun not to download - thanks!

So much fun to hear excellent musicians working with/against each other. The big bridge is so pleasant. I'm not surprised at the great mix. You guys really know what you're doing. Nice.
