Description
This song is a tribute to a pub called The Wunderbar. It was a cellar bar in Midsomer Norton, North Somerset, UK. It had an amazing music scene and the most brilliant community of miscreants, crazy heads and best friends, but sadly is no more.
I had been drinking there since the mid 80's and though family and adulthood drew me away from its many pleasures, I thought it right to mark its passing with a drinking song - in the style of the Pogues.
In the song, Death (The Bastard) stalks me through my life but I'm always able to outwit him by taking refuge in The Wunderbar. Even his best mate cancer can't find me there. (18 months since surgery and no return)

Lyrics

I was just a young man
When he first came for me
I bet my life on a game of chance
The best two out of three
And while he counts his chips
I gives yer man the slip
I went drinking underground
I was nowhere to be found

Wunderbar, Wunderbar
I'll be drinking Wunderbar
When the bastard comes for me
I'll be drinking Wunderbar

The next time that he caught me
Was the summer of '94
He said there'll be no games this time
I've come to take you down
And while he fetched his scythe
A taxi did arrive
I went drinking underground
I was nowhere to be found

Wunderbar, Wunderbar
I'll be drinking Wunderbar
When the bastard comes for me
I'll be drinking Wunderbar

The bastard finally caught me
In spring of oh fifteen
He brought his mate Big C
And they thought they'd done for me
I was led out deathly I'll
When they moved in for the kill
But when they pulled the covers down
I was nowhere to be found

Wunderbar, Wunderbar
I'll be drinking Wunderbar
When the bastard comes for me
I'll be drinking Wunderbar

Great tribute
Never had a local but after this I almost miss it. Long live the Wunderbar!
A very fun song Paul with a good story, esp. the last verse: I love happy endings. Congrats on the no return, and the song. I raise one in your honour. Cheers.

So English I guess..
Thanks for posting yer tunes, a great production and a fine conception.
Why, there is even a sing song melody. Nearly scandalous in contrast to the average post here in MJ land! Kudos!

Great!
Man this is great. Made me want to go drink, which is pretty much what a drinking song is supposed to make you want to do. A good bar is a great thing - there have been several neighborhood bars that have figured into my story too and so I'm there with you. Good luck dodging the reaper! Thanks for posting this is a lot of fun. Downloaded.
