Indie Darlin'

Description
This song took a short time to write and a long time to produce. It's about that two or three piece indie punk outfit with the tomboy girl singer that catches fire for a record or two and everyone wants to be, but they're so cool that they burn for a while and then just disappear, back to real life once they've said what they had to say. There's a band buzzing now called Diet Cig that I'm really liking a lot and I was listening and thinking about Liz Phair and all of the similar bands from the 80's and 90's and how those 'girls' are probably sitting in a PTA meeting somewhere now and driving a minivan. Even if you're famous for a moment, when that's all over real life awaits. So that's how the song came about.

Musically this is 2 minute type indie punk tune and I tried to get that quick and dirty, rough edges sound but I also wanted to give it a kind of dreamy, nostalgic feeling so I worked and reworked the melodies about a thousand times until I got something that was counter to the driving soundbed but at the same time worked with it if that makes any sense. Mixing this was such a pain, all of those mic'd amp guitar tracks were a nightmare to balance. A simple straight ahead punk tune like this really requires a live recording, but I'm just one person so...

Lyrics
all the boys
they want to hold you
when they see you play guitar
all the girls
they want to be you
you make them question who they are

indie darling
indie darling
don't want to wake up next to you
sometimes the best dreams
are the sweet things
you want but you know won't come true

first time I saw the band
I went home and wrote a novel about art and love
then I sat myself down
at a barstool
and read Bukowski till I couldn't see the words no more

one day you'll stand in some small dressing room
in some old hipster scene bar
and give yourself a good hard looking over
and the izod shirt and dungarees
and thrift shop pixie haircut
will look to you like you're just
trying to get over
and girlie then it's over

so bon voyage it's life
a doting mom
and loving wife
and when you're sitting in the PTA
I hope you think of me
guys like me
who thought that you were everything
who thought that you were everything

One guy by himself alone...
Well, ya get to do all the work. And there is no one else to blame for the thing, and decisions are simpler... and no one who smells really bad needs a ride to pick up essentials. A great deal being self produced!
Ah, the lyric is funny. Well produced as usual, great job!

true
and the best part of a one man band is that you don't have to talk/deal/provide bail money/therapist for a drummer. thanks for the listen and glad you liked the lyric!

Indie
Despite the retained raw edge, this is really well put together - vocals, mix, the lot. A song with a good story to it too. You've captured the feel perfectly.

And no bail money for the drummer ):

Love them 3 piece bands
I like your break into the punk style vibe. The cool down breaks add a nice touch.

A fun tune Craig
and your hard work mixing paid off, I think. I never listened to punk rock so I can't comment about the appropriateness of your presentation but I'm now gonna have a hard time NOT thinking of Patti Smith or any of the others as minivan-driving PTAers.

Indie Darlin'
Captures a great vibe and runs all the way to the finish with it. Indie punk is not really my scene but I like like. Your raw edges are smoother (and more musical) than most. Thanks, Craig.
