On call!
Splendid. Thank you for this treat.
A suggestion? The articulation might benefit from additional compression? I bet there is a very fine line in the lower register where the instrument becomes honky with compression, but I think hearing your breaths in that register would bring the instrument to life a bit more.

I'm guessing that there are not a lot of these around. Rich tone - I'm waiting for your next ensemble piece where you bring out all your recorders!

I bet there weren't too many kids at school who learnt on a recorder like that. They'd have to stand on a chair to play it! :-) Lovely deep, melodious sound, Vic. Nicely put together. Thanks.

Huge!
What a pipe. I bet you need big lungs to sound that recorder. Neat sound.

Lungs
Actually, it takes surprisingly little air. In fact, it's easy to give it too much air and get a somewhat rough sound.

Physics
It's not too far off to say that the air column for middle C is 2 feet long, which makes the next C down 4 foot (that's my Greatbass, which I already had) and therefore this one 6 feet. And I'm 6'3''. However, there is of course a couple of inches in that cap on top of the pipe, and in this picture it was on a slight stand, otherwise I could never reach the lowest keys. That's why it's taller than me.

In the recording here I extended that metal pipe down by a foot, and played it sitting.

Btw, this recorder is in a constant fight with my ceiling fan!

Tall.
I had no idea that contrabass recorders exist. Impressive instrument. Covers quite a range. I look forward to hearing it again. Is there anything written for contrabass, or must you improvise? Took a copy, thanks!

Repertoire
No, there are basically zero pieces explicitly for contrabass. But it's mostly an ensemble instrument. Take a piece written for Soprano/Alto/Tenor/Bass and play it with Tenor/Bass/Greatbass/Contrabass and it will sound lovely.

In fact, the "bass" recorder is an octave up from a bass singer, and this contrabass is actually in the same range as a bass singer. So you can take renaissance vocal music and play it with recorder ensemble. That's really the main attraction of this instrument: to play "low choir" ensemble.

Of course I then had to write a piece to show off this instrument.

My advice:
Since there is an apparent dearth of literature for this beautiful instrument, begin writing a collection of short piece to feature it or as solos. It has a haunting, almost tenor-ish timbre and, for its size, calls for delicate breathing (as you mention in a note above). ... this CANTABILE is so well-suited to the nature of this beautiful instrument and takes advantage of the slow air stream that you give to just, I guess, "breathe out" the notes. More, please.

man, that's one big recorder. i had no idea they came that large.

i like the ambient backdrop you set up giving a lot of room for the recorder solo.

That is amazing
I didn't even know they made contrabass recorders. It must take lots of breath control to play it. Sounds great.

Wow! Impressive instrument
This looks much like a giant contra bassoon (one of my all time favorite instruments). The sound is beautiful. I like your showcase piece also. Thanks for sharing this.

Who knew?
The things you run into at MacJams.

Where do you even get one of these instruments? Mail order? It's not likely to be a stock item at the corner music shop. It must be shipped in pieces - some assembly required?

I like the idea of taking an ensemble instrument and giving it a star turn.

Mail order
There are two, maybe three dealers in the country that can sell you such an instrument. So unless you live close to one: yes, mail order.

I have no idea ..
.. what an instrument like this would cost. It's not like they're ever going to go on sale (unless a store was closing). Am I to assume it's made out of some kind of wood?

Cost
This instrument cost more than my first or second car, but not as much as my third :-)

I believe it's stained maple. Apart from the key hardware it's indeed all wood.
