Description
I had a vague idea where I wanted this song to go but couldn't pin it down. In the end it helped when I looked for quotes about travel and borrowed and modified bits and pieces of quotes from authors including Fitzgerald, de Cervantes and Coleridge.

The song isn't easy to sing and I have struggled to get any sort of satisfactory arrangement so I have been fluffing round with it in fits and spurts all January. In the end I have decided to publish and be dammed! :-)

See what you think.

Regards,

Peter.

Lyrics
Before The Maps Were Made - Peter Bowen (December 2016)

[F] [C riff] [D]

I’m [D] drifting out on the [C] wind, a [G] novel with no [D] plot
My [F] heart is free I’m [C riff] off too Came[D]lot

No [D] need to hang my [C] hat, cause [G] home is where I’m [D] not
Not [F] everyone who [C riff] wanders round is [D] lost

I’m [C] leaving [G] here to[D]morrow
Be[C]fore the [G] cock has [D] crowed
Cause [F] what I want lies [C riff] waiting down the [D] road

I [C] have to [G] tilt at [D] windmills
An [C] errant [G] knight cru [D]sade
[F] Back to a time [C riff] before the maps were [D] made
[F] Back to a time [C riff] before the maps were [D] made

[F] [C] [G] [D]
Oooh, ooh-ooh, Out on the borderline
[F] [C] [G] [D]
Oooh, ooh, ooh, I like to take my time
[F] [C] [G] [D]
Oooh, ooh, ooh, I’m walking down the line
[F] [C] [G] [D]
Oooh, ooh, ooh, And I’m feeling fine!

Instrumental (Verse x 2)

I’m [C] leaving [G] here to[D]morrow
Be[C]fore the [G] cock has [D] crowed
Cause [F] what I want lies [C riff] waiting down the [D] road

I [C] have to [G] tilt at [D] windmills
On this [C] errant [G] knight cru[D]sade
[F] Back to a time [C riff] before the maps were [D] made
[F] Back to a time [C riff] before the maps were [A7] made

[F] [C] [G] [D]
Oooh, ooh-ooh, Out on the borderline
[F] [C] [G] [D]
Oooh, ooh, ooh, And I can take my time
[F] [C] [G] [D]
Oooh, ooh, ooh, I’m walking down the line
[F] [C] [G] [D]
Oooh, ooh, ooh, Yeah, and I’m feeling fine!

Has a dreamy quality to it. I like the harmonies and a sweet chorus. A touch of Blind Faith.
I like where you went with the concept. I can see where the singing could be tricky .THe picking sounds good. Don't know if I like the percussive feel at the end. Well done Peter.

I agree
Thanks, Stan. Bit of a hard song to categorise. Agree with the Blind Faith reference. The percussive feel at the end was a last minute thing because I thought is was dragging a bit on the way out. I can see where you are coming from. I appreciate your support and comments, as always. Take care.

Good song, good guitar playing, good vocal. I like the harmonies. The bass thumps a bit hard for my tastes (although my recent track record on bass isn't so good...)

That fluffing around has been valuable - it's come together well!

Whose hands?
Thanks, Philip. I like the song and think it could work okay in the right hands but I'm not sure my hands are the right ones. It would be interesting to see what someone did with it if they started fresh with just the guitar and vocals. I wanted the acoustic bass to have impact - perhaps too much? The final result is just as likely to be speaker/headphone dependent, as not. Talk soon, my friend.

Before the maps
I like the overall rustic feel of this song and the message. The wandering spirit... Nice of you to post lyrics with chords (as you always do). Good job with vocals and harmonies too. Thanks.

Ye olde worlde...
Thanks, Jay. The song does have an old world message and feel. Glad you thought it turned out okay. The jury is still out, for me. Take care.

Hey...
it was worth the struggle Peter. This is actually may favorite song of yours thus far. The guitar playing and melody really hits home. (Ha ha)

As for your voice... I think it sounds just fine. Whimsical and hovering between uncertainty and conviction.

I love it!

Be well friend!

Apple maps...
Thanks, Mike. There is a whimsical element to the whole concept. What would I do without my GPS and Apple Maps? :-) Glad you thought it turned out okay. I appreciate your comments. Take care.

Sail on Sailor
Who said, "True sailing is dead?" So long ago.
Great job. Fab performance and production.

Hardy souls
Thanks, Daug. Those early sailors must have been a hardy bunch. Weeks on end out in a leaky wooden ship with rations not fit for the rats. Amazing sailing skill that some actually made it around, basically where they wanted to go and mapped as they went. I appreciate your comments. Take care.

great song
there is a warm familiarity to it (not sure what I mean) but it wants you to sing along.
I agree with some the bass is somewhat "thick' against what is a very bright melody line.
keep travelling!

Thanks
Thanks, Franc. The simple, well used chords progressions probably give the song its familiarity. I will play with the EQ of the bass to see if I can get it to have impact but not be as thick. Glad you liked the song. Soon off to Ireland and Italy so I am trying to "keep travelling". Take care.

LOVE your harmonies in this. It's worth a repeat just to hear those again. Not to mention the song itself is strong as hell.
Chiming in with the heavy bass. My speakers were rumbling. I'd love to have a go at the stems, but with everything exactly as you have it (but raw, with no processing at all). PM me if interested.

Before The Maps Were Made
Nice one Peter. I agree with Philip - the bass is a bit overwhelming in the mix, and for me, there are too many bass notes on the beat for the style of the song. Vocals and guitar work really well, and there is a hint of John Barleycorn about the song - a good thing. A good set of words too.
It would probably stand up as just a guitar and vocal track, without the bass and percs, although I think I hear what you were after with the rhythm section. That dominant bass really gets in the way for me.
I'd love to have a crack at adding to the vocal/guitar tracks if I had some time, but I seem to be on a writing roll at the moment, and am not sure I want to interrupt it. However - stick the Logic file on DropBox and I'll see if any time becomes available.
Cheers,
Neil

Appreciative
Thanks, Neil. I appreciate your insights. The bass is what happens when a non-bassist gets his hands on a midi upright! :-) Happy to pop a Logic copy in Dropbox and see where you take it, if you have time. SammyD is interested in having a look, too, so it will be fascinating to see where two different creative minds take the song. I will email you with some specifics. Take care, my friend.

Mr Young
Ah really enjoyed this. "Not everyone who wanders round is lost"...what a great line. Lovely warm feel to the whole song with shades of Neil Young. have to agree with other comments the bass could be pulled back a bit for me. Good song Cheers Mark

Wish I was better...
Thanks, Vic. Yeah, I found this one difficult to wrap an arrangement round. Wish I was better at that but I am always coming at my songs from a singer/songwriter perspective and I find it hard to see a big picture arrangement. Glad you liked it. Take care.
