Morning Breeze [with VicDiesel]

Description
Victor and I have been commenting on each other's music here at MacJams for over twelve years now, so it seemed fitting we give a go at a collaboration. After a little give-and-take, this is what emerged from the combination of my guitar and Vic's recorders.

Category? Who knows. I figured this works if you add an "s" and make it "Solo Instruments."

Victor's notes
Warren sent me an mp3 file with his guitars. It was very different from what I normally do, but after a while the idea came to me of that first section: use a bunch of recorders to get a "raindrops" effect by everyone playing a different beat. In the second half of that section I have 11 recorders playing: melody, 7 raindrops, and 3 low recorders. A later section was designed as call-response, which I approached by having trios of identically voiced instruments playing. In other places I had fun putting together cascades of notes, turning the limited range of the instrument into a tool by chaining a bunch of instruments, with the resulting shift in tone colour. The very last chord is my three low recorders: bass, great bass and contra bass.

Morning Breeze
Well that's a bit different - and very enjoyable. Interesting concept, skilfully executed. The byplay between the guitars and recorders, and what all the recorders bring to the tune, makes the whole thing delightful. I like it a lot!

Pairing
It was a fun challenge for both of us because it involved pairing such different instruments, but fundamentally it still got down to theme and variation - something that Vic excels at musically. I'm glad you found it enjoyable.

On paper, this shouldn't work. But it does! And it works well indeed. Great vision to be able to put this together Guys.

Work out
About the only thing written down on paper was F A# C and 108 bpm : ) You know - today it's all digital.

Raindrops weren't falling on my head
Now that Victor has revealed he used a "raindrop" effect I realize the title probably should be "Morning Shower." However, that could be taken as "fake news." In practicing verisimilitude I must note that it was not raining when the melody popped into my head.

wow
I like how this came together! At first I was think V. Holman and was expecting to maybe hear him singing, but when I heard the winds, I saw I had the wrong Vic. Very surprising...and cool.

Mistaken Identity
Wait - I hope I sent it to the right Vic : )

It would have sounded considerably different if that had been the case. Maybe Vic and Vic should do something together, you know, to really confuse us?

Speak of the Devil
Hey - we were just talking about you .. so you showing up now puts a big smile on my face!

A big part of the joy of collaborating here at MacJams is it often leads to the unexpected.

Well this was an interesting and enjoyable trip. I like the whirlwind sound of the recorders around 1:32. Nicely done guys.

1:32
That's probably my favourite second-and-a-half in the piece. Three bass recorders playing parallel 6-4 chords: Bb-Eb-G and move that as a block.

Metaphorically speaking
Extracting a metaphor - just as Vic's wind instruments breathe life into this song, I like to think collaborations like this demonstrate there is still a breath of fresh air to be found here at MacJams! Thanks for an unexpected comment.

Unexpected
You're absolutely right. I know of no other places where this sort of collaboration would come about.

How'd this one slip by me?
Sorry it took me so long.

What a wonderful collab! Upbeat. Melodic. Great guitar tone and licks. Gorgeous recorder work the good Mr. Diesel.

Oliver wants more!

Be well friends!

Leave them wanting more
Warren originally sent me a longer file but I cut out a part, figuring that erring on the side of conciseness and variety was better.

Nicely done
Great job in mixing the two very different styles and making a coherent whole.

Experimenting
Of course, that was the challenge .. both imagining a mix with these different instruments .. and then trying to make it work. In some ways the results were surprising; in another way, it is like: yeah, that's what I was thinking could happen : )

Great to hear you two work together. The melding of styles is expertly done. Quirky and uplifting at the same time. Thanks you two. Enjoyed.

This is great! It works wonderfully and it's very fresh. What a winning combination - you'll have to do something together again.

Welcome news
I'd say that was one of the goals - to produce something "fresh," say, as fresh as a springtime breeze. So you saying so is welcoming!

Well...
isn't this nice and 'jolly'.....puts me in mind of an English springtime, with people dancing around the Maypole. I loved the combination of the woodwinds and guitars.....a lovely flavour to the song.....as was said, 'delightful', cheers to you both, M

And you can dance to it
It was delightful, for me, too, to work with Victor and to hear how the collaboration of guitars and recorder played out. Thanks for dancing around the maypole to our song : )
