Something odd is going on

Description
I can’t sing. I know that. Nobody can understand my speaking voice, and my singing voice sounds like a dingo with his knackers caught in a wire fence.
But I need to post a few songs here, so you can get a handle on my writing style and then hopefully we can get some collaborations going and someone else can handle the vocal duties.

I have had bits and pieces of this song written for quite a while but couldn’t tie it all together. Then one night, one of my daughters was watching a rerun of Forest Gump on TV and she said “Why can’t he just see what is going on?” And I replied, “Some guy’s just aren’t that smart.” Bingo! That was the thread I was looking for.

Lyrics
Something odd is going on

Tidy up your room.
You’ve left those old love letters all across your floor.
You said that lover don’t contact you no more.
You said that man’s been out of your life for more than a year.
But I am starting to suspect something odd is going on around here.

Take down that washing.
That you’ve got hanging outside on the clothesline.
I swear I saw some underpants that weren’t mine.
You said you brought them back from Canberra as a novelty souvenir.
But I am starting to suspect something odd is going on around here.

Your house is full of flowers that you bought for your own self.
But that photo of us at Wallyworld has been taken from the shelf.

Answer your front door.
I swear I heard some voices coming from your house.
Each time I knocked on that door it was quiet as a mouse.
Your porch was full of empty pretzel packs and it stank of spilled beer.
And I am starting to suspect something odd is going on around here.

Your phone is always ringing every time that we’re in bed.
And if I ever answer it, then the line always goes dead.

I tried to call you.
I phoned last night from six thirty till around about ten.
Your car was in your driveway, but the phone rang out again.
I saw you in the arms of your instructor for your new dancing career.
And I am starting to suspect something odd is going on around here.

And I am starting to suspect something odd is going on around here.

Don't stop in the name of love
Can't sing? Don't let that stop you. Because this is a great little song. Even if it's not well-sung, it is well-written, nicely structured (that instrumental break comes in just at the right moment) and has the right lilt to it to make it work both as comic and plaintive.

It's always a fab feeling when all of the pieces come together for a satisfactory fit. As you note, that "Bingo" moment.

Here's a justification I often use when I have written a song that my limited vocal skills aren't adequate to express: I call it a demo. That way I can record it with a recognition that someone else, with better pipes, could give it the treatment it deserves. Some would say that applies to virtually every song I have ever recorded : )

So that's what a dingo with his knackers caught
in a wire fence sounds like. I imagined it would sound worse. I can't sing either but you do okay ;-) This is fun (well, the situation's not but I smiled several times) and your vocal makes it more human: it wouldn't work for Michael Bublé.

How did your daughter like it?

Beware the koala
Actually, those cute cuddly koalas can let out an even more horrendous roar. True. Don't get me wrong, I had a lot of fun with this song.
My daughter just rolled her eyes and gave me that embarrassed teenager look when she heard it, so I consider that a win.
Thanks for the comments Richard. I appreciate it.

"D-I-N-G-O...
and 'Dingo was his name-O!" ;-)

Don't sell yourself short man. There's all kinds of singing, and you do just fine in this entertaining tune. (Nice guitar sound too...)

Be well friend!

Works well as it is
An interesting take on the cuckolded.

Very entertaining and I think something was probably going on.

Cheers

Good song in the Chad Morgan tradition, Dean. Lyrics made me smile. Engaging story telling. Really like the break. Keep 'em coming. Thanks.

Chad Morgan eh?
You must be as old as I am to know of Chad Morgan. Thanks Peter. That darned solo just goes round and round in my brain. (Just like those annoying ads on TV do)

Dean...
I just loved listening to this and reading the lyrics as you sang...reminds me of a guy who was popular on the radio in the UK in the 60's or 70's called "The Singing Postman". You have a nice warm sounding voice and You play a nice backing I must say; its mixed great too. Really made me smile with the folky humour. Keep on performing, cheers M

Singing Postman
G'day Mo. Thanks for the review and the encouragement. I am slowly getting my head around this recording caper although on this one, I spent 30 minutes going through all of my computer settings on a track trying to figure out why the guitar wouldn't register. Turns out, I hadn't plugged it in! I'll have to check out this singing postman character. Cheers, Dean.

Thank you Chief.
Very kind of you to say so. I am still not a fan of my own voice but hey, someone has to take the fight up to the Justin Bieber's of this world. Cheers, Dean.

Fun in the sun.
Hey there Hydrogen3. I must admit that I had fun with this song. You can't go wrong with only 4 chords. I must point out that I don't own a mandolin though. The break was just the guitar that you see in my bio photo. Thanks for the positive comments. I really appreciate them.

Smiling
Dean, the lyrics are really good. It's great when you get that light bulb moment that pull a load of lyrics and ideas together. It's a really idiosyncratic little number. Your vocals just make it work even though I appreciate what you say about their limitations. Keep at it sir, it,s always good to hear other people's creativity. The subject on this one reminded me of one I wrote years ago called "Strange" which I think is still on my page somewhere. All the best Mark

Nice sounding acoustic
and I think it compliments well with your vocals. I like the structure of your song and the vocal melody. The break really demonstrates the sound you can get out of that Dean, almost banjo like. Nice chops. Enjoyable listen and thanks for sharing.

Thanks
Nice of you to stop by and offer your encouragement. I really appreciate it. Yes that break has a strange sound alright. Hydrogen3 thought it sounded like a mandolin and you thought it it sounds banjo like. Its a combination of very heavy strings, open tuning, a capo and all played up the dusty end of the fretboard.

Funny song. I'm not sure I'd suggest Nessum Dorma as your next song, but the instruments and the voice work well for this one. I like it!

Bugger! I was halfway through mixing my cover of Nessun Dorma when I read your comment Philip. Oh well, back to the old drawing board then. Thanks for stopping by, having a listen and posting a comment. I appreciate it. Cheers, Dean

Aww thanks Char. Glad you had a laugh. I did have a picture to post with this song, but I couldn't get MJ to accept it. BTW my daughters are all teenagers so I spend lots of time siting in my rocking chair on the front porch, shotgun in hand scaring away boys who venture too close to the house.
