Description
I've been curiously devoid of inspiration since my erstwhile countrymen decided to commit countrycide in June last year. Considering I've spent the last 30 years writing political songs it was quite a surprise that I couldn't find a way in to a new song with so much to write about. Richard, my long-time songwriting partner, suggested going to the individual level but I was still struggling.

One of the results of the vote was a documented increase in hate crimes. There were many reports of Polish shops being attacked and several Polish (as well as other nationalities) being assaulted. My next door neighbour had a Polish friend who was abused in the street because he was speaking Polish on the phone.

My wife told me a few weeks ago over dinner that dancers from Eastern Europe working for a ballet company in the UK were concerned about their status and suddenly Richard's advice came back to me and I started to write the lyrics then and there. Tidied them up a little later and Richard gave me the last verse. I still didn't have a melody but at the weekend when I was practicing piano I hit on a riff and out came the melody (or what there is of it)

For those who don't know, Polish pilots played an important role in WWII. Regarded as heroes during the war they were treated disgracefully when the war ended. See here

Logic 10 drum loops and keyboards, real guitar.

It was good to simply be writing and recording again.

So for better or worse.....

The Dancer (Langford/Marris)

He's a dancer not a number he's got a name.
He's here to dance, to entertain
Now you tell him in the street, go home and take your dancing feet
we're dancing to another beat and won't need you again

His grandad flew a Spitfire in the war
Helped to keep the Nazis from the English shore
First they called him hero and then showed him the door
We've beaten our old enemy we don't need you any more

Your fathers and grandfathers won that war
Can you remember what they were fighting for?
And now it's all unravelling you've heard the weasel lies
Who's your enemy? I think they're in disguise

Great track
excellent lyrics and delivery. I love the guitar work and the way the keys bring a disco/rock to the song during after the second verse. Cool!

Disco/rock
I had no idea where this was going to go and for once I didn't spend weeks on it.

The music was recorded over a weekend.

Thanks for the listen and comment Bud.

Excellent post Dick
And welcome back to making music, however you did it, though I must say you did it well: the backer is sympathetic to your tale, which is a fine one. Sad that there are so many, as Daug calls them, haters.

Cheers Dick: I enjoyed this.

It's a problem
exacerbated by easy access to social media and the ability to pour vitriol anonymously that then seems to spill into the streets.

Thanks for taking the time to listen Richard.

Powerful song, Dick. Love the variety in the backing, the light and shade, the guitar tones, the use of different instruments. Expressive vocal; insightful lyrics (I kept thinking of the quote 'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it'). Outstanding!

Shades
of 1985 but not quite; good enough in its own right. I really liked that change ~2:00. Sort of an ominous feel, but makes you move at the same time. Strong writing.

great vocal dick....particularly at the beginning where you voice is clean and devoid of any regional/political accent.....and then you have to spoil it all by going back to 'new socialist worker' :)
love the guitar at 0.42....and the instrumental section after...lots going on....really like that synth build. top notch mix....sounds really pro throughout. nice 'chorus' synth chant.....and wait....was that a key change? dude you are on fire!
nice ral to finish.
great track dick....well done.

Apart from the
fantastic performance and mix here Dick, you said it perfectly. I'm sick to death of these knuckleheads who've never seen a war or lived through one acting like the Nazis we defeated. The attitude of all these so called 'underdogs' voting in people who are just as self-centred as the ones they are supposedly protesting about, smacks of pure ignorance.
excellent work, Cheers M

It's one of the supreme ironies
that those claiming ownership of our country have been so prejudiced against those that helped win the war.

Tough times Maurice.

Top post Dick
Love the guitar and the loopy bits. Used properly, loops can be a great addition to "real" instruments - you've done a killer job on this. I'm getting a Fairport "Nine" kind of vibe here, but that's probably your accent as much as anything.
I really like this one!! Everything works.

It all came from a riff I happened on when I was supposed to be practicing piano. Most of the keyboard parts are variations on that riff and then copied using different instruments. The wonders of midi!

I can't remember Fairport Nine (I rather lost it with them after Liege and Lief) so I must check that out.

Thanks for the listen and comments.

Back in the saddle
with a vengeance Dick! This is awesome, both in concept and in execution. Love that funky rhythm guitar in the left speaker. The situation is similar here of course. Civilization circles the drain and we all have a front row seat... I want a REFUND!

The Dancer
Really good song, Dick. Love the lyrics. "We're dancing to another beat and won't need you", great line in the context. Fine arrangement. Love the way it builds and then ebbs and flows. Cool key change. Back in the saddle big time, me thinks. Quality mix/master, too. Love the balance you have achieved. Thanks!

getting here Dick.....apologies!!! Know what you mean about your writing partner moving away. Same for Steve and I though it was me that moved 100 miles south! Cracking song that really cuts to the heart of so much that has happened in the last 12 months. Superb lyrics that say so much and a great performance. very much enjoyed. Cheers Mark

Calling out the weasels
Well when you return to the scene there's no messing about, is there? Shoot between the eyes kind of political commentary to the beat of an engaging melody. Your playing and voice are spot on (vocal mix is one of your best) and the arrangement is top drawer stuff. Welcome back Dick and thanks for the download sir!
