Description
I thought I'd never get around to doing another song as i so wanted to play my new lap steel and yet i had no inspiration as a vehicle. At last I managed to eek out this little ditty, which i thought was ideal for Valentines Day.
I hadn't plugged this lap steel into Garageband so i didn't know if I'd get a load of feedback screaming at me, but as it happened it didn't. Then right in the middle as I balanced the lap steel on my knees at the computer, the bloody phone started ringing and it rang until the song was nearly through LOL....anyway it didn't record the phone, even though it was putting me off. I couldn't start again as my back was killing me (shingles AGAIN!)....anyway enough of that. I hope you like this song which turned out to sound Hawaiian even though I thought it was on the 'Country' side of the track originally., Been dying to try the lap steel.....pity about the voice which is gaining more 'character (croak) by the day LOL

Lyrics
Angels
1.
Though people say that there are Angels, I never knew that they were real,
Some said that if you ever meet one, there’s every chance your heart they’ll steal,
That’s how I know I’ve met an Angel and it explains the way I feel,
Right from the moment I first saw her, I knew one kiss our love would seal.

Chorus.
Oh yes there are Angels; they’ll stand beside you day and night,
But you need to show them, all your love or they’ll take flight.
Oh yes there are Angels, but if you want them to stay,
Just tell them that you love them, every night and every day.

2.
Now Angels don’t all come from Heaven, they can be walkin’ in the street,
You might not recognise you’ve seen one, until your heart just skips a beat,
That’s how I knew I’d met an Angel and it explains the way I feel,
Right from the moment I first saw her, I knew one kiss our love would seal.

Instrumental.

Chorus.
Oh yes there are Angels; they’ll stand beside you day and night,
But you need to show them, all your love or they’ll take flight.
Oh yes there are Angels, but if you want them to stay,
Just tell them that you love them, every night and every day.

Sweet, sweet, sweet!
Mo, I think I understand your feelings about the current state of your voice, but you can still deliver. My heart skips a little beat when first you start "Oh yes there are Angels...". The lap steel sounds good to me and the playing even better. And the lyrics: lovely storytelling using all the romantic memes, with "old school" rhyming and two important messages: the last line of the chorus and the first line of the second verse.

Thanks Mo. I enjoyed it (twice).

Hi Richard,
thanks so much for the kind words about the lyrics and the steel sound. It was a bit of a trial, since I hadn't, as it were, 'played along' with drums or other instruments until now, as I have a little amp I've been practicing playing through., cheers M

Wow Maurice...
A top-notch post this. From the lovely lyrics to the slightly Cohen-esque vocal delivery! And while I've not been a big fan of the lap steel Robert Randolph opened my eyes (and EARS) to what this instrument is capable of. You use it to great effect here. Indeed, I hope you'll continue to employ it.

Be well friend!

I bought
the lap steel last June, but haven't had a lot of chance to learn through one thing and another. Also the many different tunings make playing various songs/ genres difficult, so I'm especially pleased with your comment as it was my first time recording while being accompanied by other instruments and a ringing telephone LOL. There are some wonderful players out there, especially Jeff Au Hoy who plays a beautifully heartbreaking sound on Hawaiian steel, regards M

I didn't
even know you played a lap steel, and pretty darned good at that! It really does have more of a Hawaiian feel than country to me, but it really doesn't matter because the song quality carries it well enough either way.

Hi Sam
Yes as I said above I'm new to this tuning I'm using, so its so 'different' playing this instrument. I did play a home made one on my 'Beautiful World' song some years back, but I'd forgotten which tuning I used and there are so very many it was a re-learning curve.....good for keeping the alzheimer's at bay I must say, cheers M

Nice steel work.
The guitar style seems more Hawaiian but the vocal phrasing, especially on the chorus, seems more like the mellower vintage country style similar to Ray Price. Nice work anyway. Didn't know you had those skills amongst all of the others in your arsenal.
And quit fishing for compliments on your singing voice ;-)

Yes Dave
I used a Hawaiian tuning on this, though I'd like to buy another lap steel and do one of the many Dobro tunings. Glad you like what I managed to do here, even though I'm still learning myself how to play. Ha ha ha...Fishing? I'm not fishing Dave....it was because of the deterioration in my breathing and tone of voice that I decided to play lap steel as another string to my bow....or as a replacement for the croaks. Age is a terrible thing LOL, cheers M

I guess I can hear the croaks
and other things if I listen closely when you sing but for me it's kind of like someone saying that Sophia Loren's mouth is too wide. I have my mind on other things :-)

A MacJams gem
If this is the kind of gem you write when you are without inspiration - look out when you are inspired!

Forget the croon .. just go with the croak. It works. Especially on that first moment "Oh yes there are angels" (as Richard has already noted).

Character can be magical
A fine song Maurice, especially with your harmonies and the lap steel riffs. Well sung sir, and I love your lyrics. If you could pull off this performance whilst a phone was ringing in the background then I'm most impressed. A true professional!

Thanks so much for this tune. It brightened my evening.

Lap steel
What a cool sounding instrument. You're right, lap steels are using in country and this doesn't sound country. I'm not sure what it would take to make it more country. Probably pick up the tempo, use a drum set instead of this percussion, and use a bass that plays strictly root-fifth-root-fifth.

Very much enjoyed!

Hi Vic,
it's a Hawaiian lap steel and it's tuned to a Hawaiian tuning, so I wasn't aiming particularly for a country sound, which would be tuned Dobro style (so many different tunings). I've just always loved that mellow Hawaiian sound from being young, so I bought this guitar last summer and this is where I'm up to now, so I'm really pleased you like what I did, thanks very much Vic, regards M
