Coming Home - Based on a Theme by David Kneupper

Description
There is nothing quite like the anticipation and joy of returning to see loved ones and the familiar surroundings of home. This piece is set in a grand cinematic style, and yet I wanted to also express a sense of intimacy and tenderness within the context of a return voyage. I hope that both come across for you.

This tune was written back in 2009 using Garageband. I always liked the basics of the piece but was never satisfied with the quality of the performance nor the lack of variation in the harmony and build of the mid section. I finally made time to rework both this year and here is the result.

When I composed the theme I thought it was original - I even sat at the piano and worked it out. About a year after I published the first version I heard the basic 6 note melody while listening to a CD I own and realized that I had been influenced. Even though I had taken the melodic idea into a totally new direction I'm still indebted to the inspiration from the piece by David Kneupper.

Coming Home
Big sound. Beautiful flow to the music. Good variety in the arrangement around the 2:30 mark. The timpani give it a big finish. Very expressive work, Doug. Much enjoyed.

Big Finish
Thanks for your observations and kind words Philip. That part around 2:30 had a fair bit of rework this time around and so I'm glad you noticed it as being effective. Nice to hear from you!

Grand and full.
The opening has clean and noble lines that right away pull you in.
I loved the stillness and expectancy you build up in the middle section all the way through to the end where it fully develops into a glorious finale.
A beautifully crafted and inspiring work Doug.
One way or another every composer is influenced by what we hear. The good ones give it their own twist and make it well worth hearing - as was this.
Cheers,
Charlie

Clean and Noble Lines
Great to hear from you Charlie! I'm really glad this worked for you since I know you are a guy who can readily think in terms of film to accompany the music. I'm pretty happy with the clarity and expressiveness of some of these new instrument packages I've been using. They really help with dynamics which is some of the improvement over the original. Thanks so much for your comments!

Cinematic
Conjures up an ocean voyage for sure. Majestic and noble theme and instrumentation. A great listen.

Ocean Voyage
Funny about the ocean voyage as I selected the photo well after composing the piece. I guess the swells remind me of ocean waves, large and spread apart. I had been thinking that this majestic theme as you say was in need of something to make it a bit more complex in terms of texture, but I decided that it is more direct and clear if it stands on its own as is. At least for what I can imagine. Thanks for having a listen Henry and for leaving such kind words.

Coming Home
Agree with Charlie re the opening having noble intent. If it sounds like the sea, smells like the sea and looks like the sea, it can only be one thing :-) Full sail with favourable winds. Liking the mix a lot. Thanks, Doug.

I guess being raised by the sea does get a little salt water into one's veins! Fair winds to you too Peter and thanks for the comments sir.

Oh. My. Golly!
Wonderful. Majestic. Soaring. Classic. I could go on but you get the picture.

I'm really impressed by the obvious amount of work you've put into this Doug, both originally and in the remix. Knowing what goes into some of my compositions gives me some insight into the complexities of this kind of work and the knowledge and dedication needed to create them. Fine work.

Gee.
It's funny that you mention the detailed work of MIDI production. I used to churn out a new piece really quickly in the old days. Of course I wasn't as careful about a whole raft of parameters that really should have been looked after. I noticed over time my output went down and down and I noticed that I was starting to live in the minutia. Maybe I will only get another 20 tunes done ever at this rate! :)

Anyway, thanks for your kind support Richard. It's great to have you back in the hood.

Soundtrack
Yes, this one isn't quite a chamber quartet. Moving picture scores are interesting animals in that the best ones blend in under the action, and yet without them there is no life. The best ones I guess stand alone as an independent listen. In any event, this film is one that just lives in our heads.

I appreciate your remarks and enthusiastic support Michael!

You certainly
achieved all you set out to achieve Doug.....a beautiful sensitive piece arranged and played with great finesse. There's something very emotional about people leaving or arriving in ships I always find and you covered it all so well...wonderful piece, regards M

The comings and goings by sea
It's a story as old as stories themselves. A very human experience even if we don't always embark on watercraft as much anymore.

It's lovely to hear from you Maurice. Thanks!

Epic indeed
I remember this piece but I can also immediately hear that the sound of it has been upgraded, so to speak. Very nicely done! I can feel those waves rolling as the watch up in the sails are calling out his Land ahoy :-)

Thanks and take care,
Henke

Hello Henrik!
Land ahoy indeed. The green hills of home. Friends and family.

I had thought that this upgrade would be easier than it was. These new MIDI instruments need a lot of new education on my part to get the most out of them. I'm glad you're happy with the result!

When is your next opus? Or have you swung round to writing as your creative outlet full time now?

Nail the sounds
Very kind of you to say so Vic. Given the high quality of your productions that means a lot. I've always been unable to just let go an idea that hasn't been realized into something that doesn't come off as well as I imagined it. A blessing and a curse I suppose. But at least I'm happy with the results when I put in the effort.

Thanks again.

Brilliant
and epic! Wonderfully put together. I've got it blasting out [Neighbours? Ha!] and it sounds fantastic. Reminds me of the theme from the Ridley Scott movie, Prometheus. Sailing, not on the sea, but through space. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have this playing in a large cinema?

Anyway, I've been away from this place for a while. Great to come back to something so good.

Prometheus score eh? I'll check that out. Yes, I would love to hear this either in the cinema or performed by a proper orchestra. I'm glad this tune greeted your return. Thanks for letting me know your thoughts Dave!

wow!
This is very beautiful! Very delicately scored and mixed. Enjoyable and inspiring.

And btw 'inspirations' like yours happen all the time. There are certain chord progressions that make the rounds each calendar year - first and lesser known talent, then the famous ones (btw. in this analogy you're famous!).

Chord progressions making the rounds
I know what you mean, especially in the pop world. And in cinematic scores too now that I think of it. I recall reading that some piece was 'PZ', meaning "Post Zimmer". While not a chord progression, the writer meant that the piece used lots of ostinati in the strings.

The kind of quartal melody used in this fanfare is certainly standard enough these days and so infection can make the rounds as you say.

Thanks for your support Pari. Always appreciated!

Epic horns
The arrangement is excellent, especially the horns. Beautiful composition. The mix is just where it should be.

Ahh, the horns
It's funny but I left out trumpets completely in this piece (and I used to play trumpet for years and years). In any case, the trombones and horns for me work fine for an epic feel, with the horns being the more emotive and powerful of the two - which is why they take the lead in the finale.

It's great to hear your kind words Steve. I appreciate your having a listen and leaving your thoughts!

Such broad strokes...
The opening horns are majestic and the whole mix of strings later with more brass is just about as majestic as you can get. What a beautiful orchestration you have done, Doug, and the theme and how you play it out is nothing short of inspiring. (My wife just sat down in my little studio and said, "What IS that? That gorgeous!" Well, she rarely drops everything to listen to something I'm blasting away, so I guess you "struck a chord" so to speak.) Just a beautiful composition and production all around. Wow.
