Description
The second of our post-Brexit songs. It's actually been sitting around for some while now after Graeme came up with the first verse and chorus in Spain last September.

We didn't really know where to take it and eventually I just put a couple of chords around Graeme's lyrics and melody , added some other verses and buggered around with the sound and the mix.

Jolly England (Hobbs/Langford © 2016)

Don't get sick, you can't find a bed
Don't get old, you'll wish that you were dead
Don't be young and live your life in debt
Don't protest cos they'll brand you as a red

Jolly, jolly, jolly, jolly England and they're laughing all the way to the bank
and the joke's on you
Jolly, jolly, jolly, jolly England and they're laughing all the way to the bank
and the joke's on you

Don't do good, bloody liberals
Don't be smart, better act the fool
Don't get poor if you want to eat
Don't read books, they'll be calling you elite

Don't forget, don't be anything but white
Don't go left when the country's going right
Don't accept everything you read
Don't expect to get anything you need

Jolly Folly

The world has gone mad. Thanks for cataloging our descent into global insanity, Dick.
The righteous indignation present in the lyrics and performance are reminiscent of The Clash. ;)

I keep thinking I'll wake up and realise it was all just a season of Dallas.

Thanks Joe, much appreciated.

It's almost impossible to avoid it!
It should be great inspiration for a songwriter like me but somehow I've struggled with it. A few ideas just beginning to come through though.

Thanks Ste, just off to check out your latest!

Love the squelchy bass sound. Great powerful mix when the drums come in. Good harmonies on second verse. Only complaint is… you left a JOLLY out on the printed lyrics :-) Top notch song though. Cheers

Ooops
I jolly well should have noticed that!

I started with a real bass but decided to use a synth as it was so rigid rhythmically and I thought it worked better.

Thanks Brendan.

Spikey
good to hear some anger Dik. Turning an unbelievably complicated and complex issue into a simple "yes/no" "in/out" vote.....muppets!!...chorus seems to be stuck in my head. cheers Mark

Yes, just about the dumbest thing a government has ever done in this country. I've a lot of anger at the moment and seem to spend a lot of time hurling obscenities at the radio.

Thanks for the listen.

Jolly sounds good in monotone :-D We can stay happy all the time, like robots! I like the ending, "Joke's on you" with emphasis and out. A wake up call.

A bit of luck
with the drums. I started with a drummer track but thought it was a bit insipid so I tried some loops but I forgot to mute the drummer track and thought I'd leave them both in place!

Thanks for stopping by Sammy.

Jolly England
I smiled at Graeme coming up with the core of the song in Spain... Exiled? :-) Post-coital disappointment drips from the lyrics. Storm the G8! And the G20! Is there a G50? :-) Nice one, guys. Thanks.

Exiled!
Not really, although it seems like that these days.

Graeme's been living in Spain since 2000 and I go over every year and we try to write and record something every time.

The G50 is really an A50 now :-(

Thanks Peter.

Puts me in mind (conceptually) of OYSTERBAND's "Another Quiet Night In England."

Oysterband
I remember them well. We supported them in Brighton 20 years ago! It's good to know they are still going and that's a fine song to be compared with!

Thanks Mike.

I've long had a burning love
of English and Irish folk-rock. After all, I am primarily of celtic descent (with just a dash of Iroquois!). Been a HUGE fan of Oysterband these past 20 years. First heard their "Fiddle Or A Gun?" on Public radio. Knew INSTANTLY they would become one of my all time favorite bands.

Anyway, I really enjoy you're music Dick. Always have. Wish we could sit down and have a beer together sometime. But I doubt I'll ever have the time or money to traverse the vast pond. Just know that---regardless of any ideological differences---you've got a bro over here.

Truly looking forward to your next offering. meantime, I'll give this one another listen!

Golly!
In all the Trump kerfuffle, I'd let Brexit slip into a small corner at the back of my head. It is of course a monumental stuffup that only a loony right wing government (and there seems to be a few of them about these days!) could go along with.
I've let my UK passport lapse in protest :(
Reminds me - yet again - of Ray Davies ........ where did Ray stand on the Brexit thing?
There are some idiot voters that will have some questions to answer when the shit hits the inevitable fan after the revolution.
Thanks for reminding me comrade.
Cheers from Oz - hey our government looks almost centre-right these days!

You're a long way from us Neil!
Not surprising that Brexit might take a back seat.

Monumental is right (with the emphasis on the "mental") Even though many of us see what's happening there are still many who don't and think that somehow it's going be gold paved roads and unicorns (did someone mention Oz? ;-) )

I'm pleased you can take something positive out of it!

Thanks for the listen and comments Neil.

Cheers

Dick

Very good song!
This is a clear statemant, Dave. And the music supports the statement absolutely. Such a good job. Somehow oldschool, somehow totally modern. I think this is a hit !(Also I can agree with J.A.Stewarts comparison with the Clash.) Some lines are so great: "Don't protest cos they'll brand you as a red"..... We are old enough to know what brexit means. Sad but true. Greetings from Berlin, Olaf

seems to be the norm these days
the intense beat and composition of the song has a immediacy that reflects the anger of the lyrics. vicous harmonized solo, brief but cool.

Powerful song Dick. The production was well done too.I can't ever recall a time when so many people in so many different countries were so dissatisfied with their governments at the same time.

The jokes on you...
This is straight ahead. The marimba part, for lack of a better name, gives a wonderful texture to the proceedings.
The production is spot on, you have a grasp of what it takes to make clean and effective tunes. That is so rare.
Nit? If you will allow. The guitar solo bit could have been a phrase from "God Save the Queen" just as easily, and would have given a lighter color to the overall effect.
Thanks for sharing your work with us.

I really appreciate the comments. It's one of the Logic arpeggiators and as I was only using two chords it helped to add a little extra texture.
