Humble Hat

Back in 2011 I sent a simple acoustic guitar track to fellow Macjammer Scott Fugate in the hopes he would contribute some live drums. As always, Scot delivered the goods, and then some!

However, soon after I got the drum tracks downloaded my old Mac crashed and burned. As most of you now know, six years passed before I got a new Mac and was up and running again. In the meantime, I had all but forgotten this little tune.

Recently, I was able to briefly revive my old Mac---just long enough to recover what files I could---before it went down again. Among the files recovered was the above mentioned acoustic guitar track, along with Scott's drum tracks. (HOORAY!)

I really wasn't quite sure what to do with it; so I've been working on it a little here/a little there. Finally, the “Humble Hat” concept presented itself to me. After that things moved along much more rapidly.

So here it is. The lost Calchas/Scott Fugate collab; being the timeless tale of an “ass” turned “angel” due to the gracious intervention of a Higher Power.

Please forgive my lame-O attempt at Rastafarian vocalizing. One does what one can...MON!

Him shoutin' “Dis is dis!” an “Dat is dat!”
Him wield da word like was de baseball bat.
Him verbal arsenal alway up to stat.
If you engaging him, he lay you flat.

All dat he care about are bein' da right.
Him everyday be spoilin'

Him push against da truth wit all his might.
Him inner darkness keep him so uptight!

Den come da light of grace;

Him hear da holy dove!
Him heart discover LOVE!

Him now a different man dat plain to see.

Das it das is dat maan...
As always, this is an inspiration listen.
So the thing is funny, yer rasta rude boy take failed, but as parody probably works great...
That guy Scott can drum up a storm! Yer playing on this one is tops. This is a very clean and crisp recording. A bubbling B-3 might have helped give some an authentic JuJu vibe?

"rasta rude boy"
I tried singing this but to no avail. Finally I opted for de spoken word approach. The tune is intended to be rather tongue-in-cheek. "Parody" could be the correct designation, as long as its not misunderstood as in any way disrespectful.

I actually did consider adding some B-3, but I already had two acoustic, and three electric guitars, and the bass... so the sonic space was getting kinda crowded. Sometimes you just gotta walk away...

Hey, I appreciate the listen and the commentary!

Oh is that what it was? I thought you were German.

Hey, this is a seriously good rock song. Starting with the drums of course, but I love the guitar work too.

This one
was never completed and so never got posted back in the day (2011). It really is a new track. I just added a second acoustic guitar as well as three electric guitars and the bass to the original acoustic guitar & drums track.

So that's why you don't remember this one Vic! :-)

Anyhoo, thanks for clocking in bro!

Be well!

Your lyrics take a while to understand, but the effort is worth it because the message speaks of transformed thinking. We could use a lot of that these days. ... I'm not really qualified to address the style of performance, but the message comes through with honesty and clarity.

Hi Paul...
Been a long time. Good to see your icon again! :-)

"Transformed thinking"... Yes, it is a great need these days. It starts with the individual, doesn't it? That's what this is about. Good call friend!

Be well!

Back For Yet Another Listen
... like something I'd hear from another era, probably playing on the edge of a distant radio station around three in the morning as I'm driving my crappy car on an empty highway on some humid summer night. A deserted highway. A half-empty pizza box on the passenger seat. And I'm trying to tune in on that song, but it's hard to get clear... and man, I'm lovin' that guitar. Who are these guys? I hope the DJ tells me who they are... (bite of pizza)... vaguely familiar, but not.

The guitars and drums are seasoned and served just right. There's a relaxed, loping vibe that really speaks to the heart of the song, and it seems to grow better with each listen. Back in the day, this would be a 'find out the artist and head to the record store tomorrow' radio discovery. If the DJ told me who is was!

As for the vocals... I'm not sure. I don't hear a parody aspect here; it's an honest, slightly bemused story of an enlightenment that came upon one who seemed an unlikely candidate. The Rastafarian angle does put this in a specific time and place - wherever that may be - with an intriguing flavor, but I'm not entirely comfortable with it. I would draw a parallel with me singing a serious song with a distinct regional accent when I'm not connected with that region in any way. It's just a little thing and it's just me, so ignore it at your leisure. I'll raise a margarita to a superb song from a superb musician.

And I don't even have to wait for the DJ to tell me who did it!

I really enjoyed your detailed commentary. RE the vocal: I'm not totally comfortable with it either. I tried singing the original lyrics but couldn't do it. (Not even close...) Then converted them to Rasta style and tried singing them again. Even worse. That left me with one of two options. Either speak the words or post it as an instrumental. I opted for the former because it made for a more interesting track IMHO.

Glad you like it mon!

Be well friend!

PS: You've taught me a new word: "loping." THX :-)
