Description
I wrote this song earlier in the year but then went on holidays and since I've been back I have felt a bit aimless and haven't really felt like recording anything.

A TV news story of the terrible plight of famed Aboriginal artist, Kathleen Ngale ( http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-07-05/utopia-aged-care-kathleen-ngale/8651086 ), during NAIDOC Week (time set aside to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements) spurred me into action.

Just me and my PRS Angelus recorded live, single take, unadulterated, using a Rode i-XY stereo mic plugged into my iPad, then exported into Logic Pro to tidy up.

See what you think.

Regards,

Peter

Lyrics
Dreaming of the Past - Peter Bowen (April 2017) Capo 2

[D] [D] [C] [G] [D] [D] [C] [G]

[D] Sitting by the river
[C] [G] Waiting for the trout to [D] rise [C][G]
[D] The long, flowing river
[C] [G] No need to anal[D]yse
[Bm] The breaking of a [G] brand new day
[Bm] Not much on my [G] mind
[Bm] A fishing rod is [G] just a way
To [Em7] while away the [A7] time
[D] I'm sitting by the river
[C] [G] Waiting for the trout to [D] rise

Walking down the long road
The sun across my back
Everything I own
Is in a burlap sack
Some days I work for honest pay
Most days I live it rough
Them city-folk drink Beaujolais
Mine? Cheap plonk in a cup
Walking down the long road
Sun across my back

Bridge
[Em7] Ah, the lonely [A7] days, [F#7] caught in this [Bm7] purple haze
[C] Can’t find my way back [G] home within this [A7/sus] maze
[Em7] A wine cask for my [A7] pillow, [F#7] it’s getting pretty [A7] thin
[C] Can’t tell you where I’m [G] from. Or where I’ve [A7/sus] been...

Lying by the embers
Dreaming of the past
Visions of the Dreamtime,
Stories unsurpassed
The changes that this land has seen
The white sail and the plough
A people brought down to their knees
Their history disavowed
Lying by the embers
Dreaming of the past
Dreaming of the past
Knowing it won’t last…

Dreaming Of The Past
Clean guitar, warm vocal, smooth flow to the melody, gently melancholic lyrics. Beautiful!

Mojo
Thanks, Philip. I might try and work up an arranged version of this but I just needed to record something to get my mojo back. It may have worked because I came up with another song sketch this morning :-) Talk soon.

Love this sort of thing...
I've always been a sucker for good folk balladeering and the like. Guitar is very well recorded. Natural and crisp.

Very well sung. A fine example of musical story-telling.

Bravo!

Not great shakes
Thanks, Mike. I've never been great shakes at arranging. I just like to play and sing. So that is what MJ gets a lot of the time. The Rode i-XY mic just plugs into the lightning port of my iPad and does a great job. I just sat the iPad on some books on my desk to get it at a height somewhere between the guitar and my mouth and pressed record. I have a number of other mics, including an XY stereo pair of AKG's but using the iPad/Rode combo is just so simple I go with it when I am feeling lazy (which is most of the time these days :-)). I'm glad you liked it. Take care.

I grok some
Jim Croce cadence. In my book, that is a compliment. Love this kind of performance; easy, laid back and honest. Thanks.

Hi Peter
Gentle contemplations about what I've experienced as a dark topic. I think you've motivated me to put one of my 'poems' to music about the same topic and see what happens.
AYou've got a good song there and when your mojo is back , build it. :))

Morphed
Thanks, Franc. The song was originally going to be feel good but it morphed into something far more serious. I couldn't believe the story about Kathleen Ngale. Made me hang my head in shame. Music is a medium that does allow the exploration of dark times in an sympathetic context. Go for it. Take care.

Damning
Thanks for the listen and supportive comments, Vic. The story is damning. I felt saddened and ashamed that such a wealthy country as Australia could allow anyone to be neglected that way. Take care.

Things changed...
Thanks, Vic. Earlier in the year when I first started it, the song was going to be upbeat and feel good. Things changed... The Rode i-XY does a very good job of capturing live performances. And you can take it anywhere with the iPad. Very useful. I appreciate your support, as always. Take care.

I kept
hearing something like a toe tapping for percussion. Sort of like Blackbird. This is nothing like that song, but that I couldn't get that tapping beat out of my head as I listened. Like it would add to the upbeat (musically) spirit.

Wavelength
We are on the same wavelength, Sam. I actually considered overlaying me tapping my guitar as percussion on the song. But I wondered if it would be too insistent if it happened all song. I might try it coming in from the second verse. P.S. I might have another song that we could work up together. I am still grappling with a few lyric lines but I will send you a demo when I get them sorted. Take care.

Man, guitar and microphone (and iPad)
I watched the Utopia story, and was deeply saddened that this could be happening in our own country. And it's just the tip of the iceberg.
I like your words and the performance and recording do them justice.
So many stories to tell.
Nicely done Peter

Hard to believe...
Thank, Neil. Yes, hard to believe that we live in the "lucky" country. I wonder if anything has improved since the story. I am going to chase it up. The Rode i-XY does a good job. Just plug in and play. Perfect for my style. Talks soon.

Good to sing
Thanks, John. The song has that roll-along feel and it is a good one to sing. I'm sure it could arrange up but I am a solo singer/songwriter at heart and I write songs that will work in that setting - so that is what MJ gets :-) I appreciate your kind words. Take care.

so nice
Love the little rhythmic transitions you throw in between verses. The whole song is as mellow as the river and country road. The bridge is awesome in it's sophistication and musicality. You obviously know where you've been and where you want to go in a song. Excellent.

Worth singing about
Thanks, Tom. Kind words. Rivers and country roads are worth singing about. I appreciate your comments about the bridge. A folk ballad like this really needs a point of diversion in the middle. Glad you enjoyed it. Take care.

I agree ...
with Char this has a Jim Croce feel that’s just wonderful coupled with your own distinctive voice and style makes this a very fine work Peter.

Excellent tune Peter. It really doesn't need anything else for the arrangement, like all good songs it holds up well even without all the fluff.
